Opis:
The article presents the issue of the development of linguistic competence in the context of neurobiological research which points to the functional asymmetry of the brain. A reflection of this asymmetry is, among other things, lateralization of paired organs of the body. The author presents the results of studies indicating a connection between the development of lateralization and the development of language. She also emphasizes the need for therapeutic intervention for children with ambidexterity, cross or left-sided laterality. Moreover, the aim of the article is to sensitize people working with pre-school children to the issue of delays in dominance of paired organs. This is because delayed lateralization is in many cases accompanied by speech disorders.13 Page to25

Opis:
This study is based on an unauthorized translation of Diagnostic Guide for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: The 4-Digit Diagnostic Code, Third Edition, 2004 written by Susan J. Astley, Professor of Epidemiology. The research further includes additional scholarly sources, studies conducted by authors of this article as well as their own research in Centre for Diagnostics, Therapy and Prevention of FAS. Our purpose was to explore selected correlations between executive functions and writing and reading tests in selected target groups (elementary school students between the age of 9 and 11). The research project partially corresponds to diagnostics criteria for selected domains “executive functions” and “learning disabilities” in the original Guide - The 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. An outcome of this study, which was conducted within the project Context of Selected Diagnoses in Students with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Spectrum and Students’ Inclusion in Selected Daycares and Elementary Schools, reveals positive correlations between selected domains and a significance in FASD prevention within Slovakia.

Opis:
Background. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a selected special education method on the level of physical activity in schoolchildren with intellectual disability. Material and methods. The study was conducted on 32 children with rather similar backgrounds: all participants were Armenians with no medical history of any registered disorders and the same moderate degree of intellectual disability (IQ score = 35-49). A physical education program based on two games using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was conducted for three months by a physical educator trained in PECS. The level of habitual physical activity before and after the study period was assessed by the Physical Activity Questionnaire for children (PAIC-A) and pedometry (Omron HJ-112, Illinois, USA). Twoway ANOVA (intellectual disability × intervention) with a post hoc Bonferroni test was used to examine the differences between the pre- and post-intervention physical activity and pedometry assessment results. Results. The use of PECS resulted in an overall increase in the levels of physical activity. The results showed a significant group-by-time interaction effect for unstructured physical activity, structured exercise, organized sports, commuting to and from school, and total sedentary activities (all measured in min/week; p<0.05). Post hoc comparisons revealed a remarkable improvement in PAIC-A and pedometry scores in the intervention group (p<0.05). Conclusions. Technologies for developing communication skills are an option to increase the physical activity of children with intellectual disability. Enhanced working memory facilitates improved executive motor functions.
Wprowadzenie. Celem pracy jest ocena skuteczności wybranej metody kształcenia specjalnego na poziom aktywności fizycznej u dzieci w wieku szkolnym z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 32 dzieci o dość podobnym pochodzeniu: wszystkie były Ormianami, bez historii medycznej jakichkolwiek zarejestrowanych zaburzeń i z takim samym umiarkowanym stopniem niepełnosprawności intelektualnej (wynik ilorazu inteligencji, IQ = 35-49). Porównania post hoc wykazały znaczną poprawę wyników PAIC-A i pomiaru liczby kroków w grupie interwencji (p<0,05). Wnioski. Technologie rozwijające umiejętności komunikacyjne stanowią opcję zwiększenia aktywności fizycznej dzieci z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Poprawiona pamięć robocza ułatwia poprawę wykonawczych funkcji motorycznych.

Opis:
Inclusive education is an expression of the educational system transformation and the transfer from focusing on adapting a pupil with special needs to school onto adapting teaching conditions to the pupul’s special needs. In this context, inclusive education is shown as a specific kind of intervening into the process of an individual’s socialisation having a double character of changes: in people, and in culture, which supports people’s development and building the inclusive society, in which people can experience unity in diversity. Cooperative learning is an educational strategy, which makes it possible to create a pro-inclusive social context and to develop pupills’ cognitive and social competencies necessary to function in a heterogenic community. The deliberations can be completed with the analysis of the selected factors conditioning cooperative learning in relation to pupils with disabilities and their non-disabled schoolmates. They are: (1) experience related to cooperation; (2) personal characteristics of pupils and (3) pupils’ preferences related to exercising task roles.

Opis:
The article is a qualitative research report written from the theoretical perspective of disability studies. Qualitative research, case study, carried out for the purposes of this article, concerns learning about disabilities acquired in husbands a war veterans by their wives. The place of research is military culture, while the aim is to understand the essence of what wives learned about the disability of their husbands during the entire process of adaptation to life with a disability after returning from a mission, against the background of life in military culture. The theoretical part of the article contains a review of world literature with an emphasis on defining acquired disability. The very phenomenon of acquiring disability by veterans during military missions and its background, i.e. the anthropological phenomenon of culture shock, were analyzed. The empirical part of this article is a qualitative report of 3 case studies and 3 voices of war veterans’ wives. The research question in this report was formulated as follows: What did the wives learn about the acquired disability of their own veterans’ husbands after their return from military missions abroad? Research results generated after coding and categorization analyzes (Gibbs, 2011) indicate categories that answer the main research question and sub-questions in the following contexts: (a) acquired disability, (b) military support, (c) veterans’ privileges (d) auto-marginalization of veterans (e) wives’ infirmity, (f) alcohol and domestic violence, (g) before suicide, (h) wives suggesting changes in the support of veterans with acquired disabilities. The results of the analyzes indicate that the wives learned about the symptoms and characteristics of their husbands’ disabilities (mental and physical) and, additionally, they learned about the secondary disability (auto-marginalization, alcohol or drug addiction, domestic violence, escalation of suicidal thoughts) during adaptation after military missions.

Opis:
The research aimed to find out the manifestations and rate of occurrence of problem behaviour among pupils with specific developmental learning disabilities in teachers’ reflections. Differences in the rate of occurrence of pupils’ problem behaviour were compared with regard to their current level of education, position in the class, and academic achievement. Data were gathered by content analysis of text documents – pupil pedagogical profiles including the Conners Rating Scale for teachers (1969, 1999). Data were processed by SPSS, the method of statistical inference, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance. A variability of SLD pupils’ behaviours was discovered. The most pronounced manifestations included internalising problem behaviours; externalising problem behaviours were mostly disruptive and inattentive behaviours. SLD pupils with poor academic achievement were characterised by significantly more frequent manifestations of problem behaviour.

Opis:
This study examines the relationship between psychological flexibility and attitudes, perceptions, and feelings towards individuals with disabilities and towards integrating people with disabilities in society. This integrated study, presented here, is a stage in a broader study that examined the relationship between psychological flexibility, educational elements, and various components that take part in shaping and assimilating perceptions and attitudes towards disabilities. The study presented here was conducted in two parts: The first part included data collection and quantitative analysis from 153 adult subjects to understand the statistical relationship between psychological resilience and attitudes toward disability. The second part included integrated data collection and analysis, quantitative and qualitative, from 60 respondents, 30 children, and 30 adults, to deepen our understanding regarding the correlations between psychological flexibility and the approach towards disabilities and the understanding of components that affect the correlation. The study shows a positive correlation between psychological flexibility and an attitude towards disabilities, and contributes to deepening the understanding of components that have different effects on this relationship.
