Opis:
This article presents a process of developing a computational model of a light construction vertical lathe. The model is made using the finite elements method. Due to the complexity of the machine tool and the optimization of the computation time superelements have been used in the model. The application of this method has reduced the computation time allowing the analysis of many variants of the mutual position of the machine components. The results of the analyzes led to the indication of weak links of the machine tool. After the improvement of the machine tool construction the movement of the tool tip and the workpiece was much smaller.

Opis:
In this paper, Finite Element Method (FEA) harmonic analysis of the changes caused by raising the centerline of a large, precise lathe is presented. Two standalone dynamic subsystems (“Rotor Shaft” and “Support”) are revealed and the resilience of the “Rotor Shaft” to the raising procedure is stated. The three subsystems of the “Support” class are much more dynamically pliable, only the main eigenmodes of the shaft and supports are excited in the 0…100 Hz range (MR1“Half-wave” and MS1…3 “Radial pecking”). Mounting the lunette suppresses the MR1 peak by a factor of two; therefore the lunette is strongly recommended, with an optional tuned-mass damper (TMD). The support’s resonant frequencies MS1…3 are more deleterious for precision; they should be omitted or weakened using TMD’s that are attached to the supports. For the above conditions, raising the centerline (up to 600 mm) may be included in the lathe renovation program.

Opis:
The geometrical accuracy of the products are essential for high quality and interchangeability. Lapping processing is mostly using for final improvement of geometrical accuracy. Geometrical accuracy includes cylindricity, circularity and straightness. In this paper, lapping processing using a normal lathe was investigated for improvement of geometrical accuracy. Firstly, normal turning process is taken and then, the lapping process is performed using the same lathe. The lapping tool consists of a lapping head made of polypropylene (PP), a coil spring for supplying lapping pressure and holder for fitting on tool post. Lapping slurry is composed by mixing water, PEO (Polyethylene Oxide) and diamond grain. This lapping slurry is supplied between the work piece and the lapping head during lapping processing. The lapping head is made to contact and leave from work piece in regular intervals for catching new grains and removing chips. The optimum lapping condition was investigated for high productivity and high accuracy by experiments. It is concluded from the results that; (1) The geometrical accuracy were improved by using developed lapping system with ordinary lathe machine. (2) The optimum lapping condition was revealed experimentally. (3) The surface roughness and dimensional accuracy are also improved using this developed lapping system.

Opis:
The results of finite element analysis of large machined rotor fastened into heavy precise lathe are reported. Many design changes are simulated to improve the dynamic rigidity of the machining. Three radial eigenmodes detrimental to the accuracy were revealed: rotor-stock bending at 17.7 Hz (“half-wave”), rotor-lathe bending at 36.1 Hz (“full-wave”), and “support rocking” at 68.1 Hz. The frequency response functions and dynamic rigidities were evaluated. Three compliance issues were revealed: angular flexibility of the spindle console, low stiffness of the lathe bed (with boots), and an excessively slender tailstock. It is proposed to transform the spindle chuck into a table with additional hydrostatic backing, fill the bed cavities with concrete, and redesign the tailstock as a counter-spindle unit. This will decrease the amplitude of the main rotor resonance by 6.3 times and upshift the frequency near two-fold from 17.7 to 35 Hz. The renovated lathe should be able to machine a rotor without a lunette system or overriding the main resonant frequency.

This paper presents a method for simplified modeling of bearing nodes of a lathe spindle using the finite element method. The proposed modeling methodology is based on the use of an orthotropic material model, which is used to reflect the stiffness properties of the bearing, both in the radial and axial directions. The modeling results have been experimentally verified. This resulted in full agreement of the mode shapes, an average relative error of the natural frequency values of 1.48% and high agreement of the receptance function.

Load bearing system simulation is provided for a huge lathe to be renovated. Static and modal analyses are done by FEM. Focus was centerline rising, needed for larger rotor shaft machining. Forces between shaft and three supports were applied. Shaft static stiffness is lowered at 1.15 times only for 600 mm centerline rising. Supports have lost its rigidity at 1.42 times. Concrete pouring into bed cavities is recommended for supports flexibility limitation such as tailstock reinforcement. Robustness of bottom resonances is revealed both for rotor shaft (14.5-18.2 Hz) and supports (42.7-55.4 Hz). Centerline rising is allowed on 300 mm at least. It gives possibility to machine extremely large (up to ø2750 mm) shafts.

Opis:
Lapping is an old traditional machining process that has been useful all along in the human history. Uniform surface finishing by manual hand lapping on cylindrical inner and end surfaces are very difficult. Additionally, the geometrical form accuracy and productivity are lower. In a previous study, the new lapping method for outer cylindrical surface using the lathe with linear motor has been reported. However, this method could not be applied directly for the cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Therefore, lapping for mirror-like finish on cylindrical inner and end surfaces using the lathe with linear motor is investigated. In this study, lapping tool was modified from previous study to be suited for the cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Then, lapping methods for inner and end surfaces were developed for uniform mirror-like finish. Surface roughness and geometrical form accuracy improvement were measured for both surfaces. The optimum conditions for high productivity and high quality mirror-like surfaces were investigated. It was concluded from the results that, the developed lapping system was able to process mirror-like surface on cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Moreover, the optimum conditions for the mirror-like surfaces were revealed experimentally.

Several machines with linear motor have been developed for high productivity. The characteristics of these machines are high speed, high acceleration and deceleration with stable behaviors of feed. Moreover, mirror-like surface is required to add high quality on the most products. In this study high speed lapping by using the lathe with linear motor was investigated for mirror-like surface. Lapping was performed after turning with the same lathe Lapping tool consists of a lapping head, a spring and holder on the tool post to assemble the linear motor lathe. The spring is used to supply lapping pressure. Lapping slurry consists of water, PEO ( Polyethylene Oxide) and diamond grain. This slurry was supplied between a work piece and lapping head. Opis:
Thermal error always exists in a machine tool and accounts for a large part of the total error in the machine. Thermal displacement in X-axis on a CNC lathe controlled based on a rapid heating system is presented in this paper. Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heating plates are installed on the X-axis of the machine. A control temperature system is constructed for rapid heating which further helps the thermal displacement to quickly reach stability. The system then continuously maintains stable compensation of the thermal error. The presented rapid heating technique is simpler than the compensation of machine thermal errors by interference in the numerical control system. Results show that the steady state of the thermal displacement in the X-axis can be acquired in a shorter time. In addition, thermal errors in constant and varying working conditions could be significantly reduced above 80% and 60%, respectively, compared to those without using the rapid heating. Therefore, the proposed method has a high potential for application on the CNC lathe machine for improving its precision.

The drill string consists of connected drill pipes and other elements. The connection is carried out by screwing of the drill string elements with the help of tool-joint tapered thread. The operational characteristics of the drill pipes depend of the manufacture precision of these tool-joints mostly. The accuracy of the thread is regulated by the accuracy of its profile and the accuracy of its pitch diameter value. The accuracy of the tapered thread manufacturing on the lathe in its depending on the values of the geometric parameters of the lathe tool and the values of deviations of its installation relatively to the workpiece axis is investigated. It is proved that for the tapered thread of form VI profile used for connection of drill pipes with the diameter from 30 mm to 44 mm the most influential factor, in relation to the accuracy of the thread profile is the value of the rake angle. Application of the rake angle value up to -5° according to the research data leads to a deviation from the specified profile of 0.3°, which is more than 35% of the declared standard tolerance on deviations from the profile. Also, the influence of the back rake angle value on the value of the deviation from the standard pitch diameter of the thread is proved. It is proved that the magnitude of the tangential displacement of the nose of the cutter relatively to the axis of the thread up to -0.2 mm can cause a deviation of the profile angle of 0.18°, which is 27% of the standard tolerance.
