Opis:
This study aimed to examine the number of latent classes of criminal social identity that exist among male recidivistic prisoners. Latent class analysis was used to identify homogeneous groups of criminal social identity. Multinomial logistic regression was used to interpret the nature of the latent classes, or groups, by estimating the associationsto number of police arrests, recidivism, and violent offending while controlling for current age. The best fitting latent class model was a five-class solution: ‘High criminal social identity’ (17%), ‘High Centrality, Moderate Affect, Low Ties’ (21.7%), ‘Low Centrality, Moderate Affect, High Ties’ (13.3%),‘Low Cognitive, High Affect, Low Ties’ (24.6%), and ‘Low criminal social identity’ (23.4%). Each of the latent classes was predicted by differing external variables. Criminal social identity is best explained by five homogenous classes that display qualitative and quantitative differences.

Opis:
In social sciences, especially in economy, to reveal relations between variables it’s easy to apply many known statistical tools when we deal with observable (measureable) variables. The problems appear when dealing with latent variables – that are not directly observed and they are of subjective matter. It’s also an important issue to measure relations between latent variables. The example of latent variables are preferences. The preferences play a very important role in economy. Very often real market decisions, choices (or answers in a questionnaire) are described by non-metric variables (nominal and ordinal). These variables are also called qualitative. The latent class analysis allows to reveal hidden relations between observable variables. The observable variables allow, with a specified probability, to find a non-observable phenomenon. The latent class analysis allows to analyze the qualitative data [see: McCutcheon 1987, p. 7; 11; Hagenaars 1993, p. 21–23]. LCA was introduced by Lazarsfeld in 1950 [1968]. The paper presents evaluation of college students with application of latent class analysis. To obtain such a goal data collected (winter recruitment of 2008/2009) by a college in Walbrzych was used.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to explore heterogeneity of change in state affect following the introduction of insulin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes. State affect was assessed twice among 305 patients: just before the introduction of insulin therapy and at 1-month follow-up. Latent class growth modeling showed that negative affect (NA) increased in 78% of the sample, whereas positive affect (PA) improved in only 17% of the participants. On the basis of cross-tabulation of these changes a 4-class model of emotional response to the new treatment was obtained. The largest subgroup of participants (57%) manifested “threat response”, i.e. moderate-stable PA with increase in NA. Participants in the “challenge response” subgroup (11.8%) showed increases in both NA and PA. The third class (10.2%) characterized by “no response”, had low-stable NA and moderate-stable PA. The smallest “stress response” subgroup (9.8%) showed increase in NA and high-stable PA. Gender, age and education level were significant covariates of group membership. Thus, the findings revealed heterogeneous emotional response to the new treatment, which may be of clinical relevance for improving diabetic patients’ adjustment through a more individual, person-centered approach.

Opis:
Latent variable models are used and applied in many areas of the social and behavioral sciences. The increasing availability of computer packages for fitting such models makes latent variable models popular, known and applied in many scientific areas. Latent variable models have a very wide range of applications, especially in the presence of repeated observations, longitudinal data, and multilevel data. The basic model postulates an underlying categorical latent variable; within any category of the latent variable the manifest or observed categorical variables are assumed independent of one another (the axiom of conditional independence). The observed relationships between the manifest variables are thus assumed to result from the underlying classification of the data produced by the categorical latent variable. In this paper we present the theoretical and methodological aspects of latent variable models, as well as their application in R software in the field of economic research.

The objective of the research was to identify and select homogeneous segments of consumers in terms of their competence on the market of the financial services, as well as to evaluate the influence of the consumers’ economic competence on the relations with banks. The sociodemographic features as well as the place that the consumer occupies within the social structures provide a poor explanation of the evaluation of the banks. Opinions about banks are poorly correlated with the socio-economic status of the consumer. There is a weak relationship between the economic status of the consumer and his/her economic competence. There is a strong correlation between the economic competence of a consumer and the overall evaluation of the banks. Four homogeneous groups of consumers were selected in terms of economic competence: Self-excluded (17%), Uninterested (48%), Second-raters (30%), and Leaders (6%). The segmentation was conducted using latent class analysis (LCA). The latent class analysis enabled one to identify the subtypes of the interconnected features which are unobserved in the traditional model. The source of the empirical data is comprised of the field research results conducted by the CAPI method on a nationwide representative sample of the residents of Poland, N=3000.

Opis:
Objectives: Relapse is very much associated with the management of disorder during the treatment, but also many other factors could trigger it. The aim of this study was to explore classes and patterns of relapse risk in patients with schizophrenia of Razi Hospital. Methods: Using random sampling techniques, we recruited 300 participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia in Razi hospital of Tehran (Iran) between January and May 2017 in a cross-sectional survey. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to establish a baseline model of risk profiles and to identify the optimal number of latent classes, and we used ordinal regression to identify factors associated with class membership. Results: Three classes of multiple relapse risk were identified. LCA showed that, overall, 52%, 22% and 26% of participants with schizophrenia were divided into class 1, class 2 and class 3, respectively. Compared to members in the lowest-risk class (reference group), the highest-risk class members had higher odds of being the age of disorder onset under 25 (OR = 1.4; CI: 1.42–2.33). Participants with schizophrenia who were unemployed were more likely to categorize in the highest-risk class than members of the low-risk class (OR = 2.5; CI: 1.44–4.1). Also, female patients were more likely to belong to members of the high-risk class than members of the low-risk class (OR = 2.22; CI: 1.74–7.64). Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of having targeted prevention programs for all domains of Age of onset, female and unemployed related. So, current study suggested that interventions should focus on these risk factors. Furthermore, Increasing the Job opportunities for participants with schizophrenia is warranted so as to prevent of schizophrenia disorder.

Opis:
Item Response Theory (IRT) is an extension of the Classical Test Theory (CCT) and focuses on how specific test items function in assessing a construct. They are widely known in psychology, medicine, and marketing, as well as in social sciences. An item response model specifies a relationship between the observable examinee test performance and the unobservable traits or abilities assumed to underlie performance on the test. Within the broad framework of item response theory, many models can be operationalized because of the large number of choices available for the mathematical form of the item characteristic curves. In this paper we introduce several types of IRT models such as: the Rasch, and the Birnbaum model. We present the main assumptions for IRT analysis, estimation method, properties, and model selection methods. In this paper we present the application of IRT analysis for binary data with the use of the ltm package in R.

Opis:
Item response theory is considered to be one of the two trends in methodological assessment of the reliability scale. In turn, latent class models can be viewed as a special case of model-based clustering, for heterogeneous multivariate discrete data. The combination of the two mentioned latent variable models concerns the assumption that the population under study is composed by homogeneous classes of individuals with very similar latent trait levels. In this approach, the model selection is based on the ordered steps consisting of selecting specific features, such as the number of latent dimensions, the number of latent classes, and the constraints on the item parameters. The main goal of the paper is to find groups of Poles not currently working for pay with similar workplace flexibility levels and to analyse the (selected) item characteristics of the International Social Survey Programme questionnaire, as well using the discretized variant of polytomous IRT models, formulated by a latent class approach.
W pracy przedstawiono zastosowanie podejścia modelowego w taksonomii wykorzystującego teorię IRT w badaniu umiejętności dostosowania się do zmian polskich respondentów poszukujących pracy. Badania przeprowadzone zostały z wykorzystaniem pakietu MultiLCIRT programu R dla danych pochodzących z Międzynarodowego Programu Sondaży Społecznych ISSP 2015.

Opis:
The determinants of mode choice of interregional transport of fish, which is highly perishable, vastly differ from that of other commodities. These determinants are to be identified to improve transport efficiency. A questionnaire survey of shippers is used to collect the data. Highly correlated observed variables are combined to form four latent factors by factor analysis to reduce the errors in modelling. Logical relations among the component variables of latent factors are perceived, and mathematical formulations are used to estimate new variables. It is found that transportation costs and shipment weight contributes to factor 1, while distance contributes to factor 2. However, transportation costs are associated with distance and shipment weight. Thus, the variable, transportation cost per q-km, is estimated. Survey respondents' attitudes are also incorporated into modelling by including qualitative factors obtained by the factor analysis of shippers' preference ratings. A latent class analysis confirmed the existence of heterogeneity among shippers. Misrepresentations of effects occur in modelling if the heterogeneity in the data is not considered. No studies have found the best combination of observed variables, latent factors, estimated variables, and qualitative factors, considering shippers' heterogeneity in freight mode choice. Hence, this study is done to find the optimum modelling strategy. Modelling revealed that models built with estimated variables outperformed those built with latent factors. Including qualitative factors along with observed variables and estimated variables showed further improvement. However, the model that includes observed variables, estimated variables, and qualitative factors considering shippers' heterogeneity is the best. It was found that the mode selection behaviour of different latent classes of shippers is distinct. A mode shift from road to rail could be achieved by lowering transportation costs and increasing speed, reliability, and safety for fish transport. Expanding roll on-roll off facilities, dedicated freight corridors, parcel trains, refrigerated containers, and piecemeal service by rail promote a mode shift from road to rail and reduce energy usage.

Opis:
Peer aggression, when escalated and regular, has negative consequences for proper psychosocial development. The main aim of this study was to identify classes among middle school students according to similarity in terms of experiencing particular forms and manifestations of peer aggression. Data were collected using a proprietary questionnaire, from which 10 questions forming indicators of experienced aggression (five forms, two manifestations each) were used for analysis. A total of 1.050 middle school students (525 boys and girls each) aged 13 and 14 participated in the study. The students most often experienced verbal and relational aggression, and least often sexual aggression. Boys were more likely to report experiencing physical and verbal aggression (being insulted), while girls reported being the target of gossip and cyber aggression (offensive comments). Using Latent Class Analysis, we analyzed a model with six classes as follows: Low all, High verbal and relational, High physical and verbal, High all without sexual, High all and High sexual, cyber and relational. The results show that the phenomenon of peer aggression is not homogeneous and that the design of preventive measures should take into account the specificity of the experiences of its victims.
Uczniowie najczęściej doświadczali agresji werbalnej i relacyjnej, a najrzadziej przejawów agresji seksualnej. Chłopcy częściej informowali o doświadczaniu agresji fizycznej i werbalnej (bycie wyzywanym), a dziewczęta o doświadczeniu plotkowania na swój temat i cyberagresji (obraźliwe komentarze). Wykorzystując Analizę Klas Latentnych, poddano analizie model z sześcioma klasami: Wszystkie wskaźniki niskie, Wysoka werbalna i relacyjna, Wysoka fizyczna i werbalna, Wysokie wszystkie poza seksualną, Wysokie wszystkie wskaźniki oraz Wysoka seksualna, cyber i relacyjna. Uzyskane rezultaty pokazują, że zjawisko agresji rówieśniczej nie jest homogeniczne, a projektowanie działań profilaktycznych powinno uwzględniać specyfikę doświadczeń jej ofiar.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to identify customers' purchasing behaviour profiles on the basis of characterizing the process of making a decision to purchase a product from food industry companies’ indicators (observable variables) in the context of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Design/methodology/approach: The data for the research were collected from a survey concerning a group of 801 customers from the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. The resources were pre-explored and pre-processed to enable further studies. In order to obtain customers profiles, the latent class analysis (LCA) method was used. It enables identification of homogeneous groups (latent classes) of customers based on selected indicators. Findings: The impact on customers’ purchasing behaviour of 15 CSR activities undertaken by enterprises from several different groups (in relation to: environment, society, employees, contractors, and customers) was examined. Six profiles of customer purchasing behaviour were identified. They were labelled and subjected to descriptive characteristics. Research limitations/implications: The results point out the need to continue the research based on a broader countrywide data set. Practical implications: The research findings can contribute to improving the effectiveness of food industry companies in the range of CSR activities. Due to this, these companies will be able to take more effective steps to retain existing customers and acquire new ones. Social implications: Taking corporate social responsibility actions contributes to solve social and environmental problems. It can also affect the quality of life in a society. Nowadays, it is an important and developmental research area. Originality/value: The conducted study showed that latent class analysis is proper tool for analysing the qualitative data obtained in the questionnaire surveys. The work provides a vital information on the impact of corporate social responsibility activities by food industry companies on customers' purchasing behaviour.

This paper attempts to determine the latent structure of the curriculum for primary school teacher education in the first cycle of studies at Serbian teacher training and education faculties. By applying the factor analysis into the first level of teacher education, four latent dimensions could be identified that could be nominated as General Education, Basic Education, Methodological Education, Specific Education, and one bipolar factor. The results indicate that learning outcomes and competences in certain fields of instruction should be re-examined and re-directed in line with the experience of the EU countries in order to harmonize and modernize the curriculum for primary teacher education in Serbia.
