The aim of the current paper is to review the national and international journal articles on washback in language testing in Turkey between 2010 and 2017. The studies have been obtained from several databases such as ERIC and ScienceDirect, and the journal websites. The studies conducted on washback in Turkish contexts are divided into two main groups: the studies conducted on washback effects of high-stakes exams in Turkey, and the studies conducted in state and private schools in Turkey. The studies are discussed with respect to their main findings, strengths, and weaknesses and most of these studies are based on the national examinations such as YDS (Foreign Language Exam) and their washback effects on examinees.

This article examines and reviews two types of reduced redundancy tests, namely cloze tests and C-tests, which involve completing a text from which certain units (whole words or their parts) have been removed. Assessment instruments of this kind are typically used to measure overall language proficiency, for example for the purpose of making placement decisions. The paper also discusses the development of these two measures of reduced redundancy with the help of the WebClass testing system.

Opis:
Researchers are frequently confronted with unanswered questions or items on their questionnaires and tests, due to factors such as item difficulty, lack of testing time, or participant distraction. This paper first presents results from a poll confirming previous claims (Rietveld & van Hout, 2006; Schafer & Gra- ham, 2002) that data replacement and deletion methods are common in research. Language researchers declared that when faced with missing answers of the yes/no type (that translate into zero or one in data tables), the three most common solutions they adopt are to exclude the participant’s data from the analyses, to leave the square empty, or to fill in with zero, as for an incorrect answer. This study then examines the impact on Cronbach’s α of five types of data insertion, using simulated and actual data with various numbers of participants and missing percentages. Our analyses indicate that the three most common methods we identified among language researchers are the ones with the greatest impact  n Cronbach's α coefficients; in other words, they are the least desirable solutions to the missing data problem. On the basis of our results, we make recommendations for language researchers concerning the best way to deal with missing data. Given that none of the most common simple methods works properly, we suggest that the missing data be replaced either by the item’s mean or by the participants’ overall mean to provide a better, more accurate image of the instrument’s internal consistency.

Opis:
Language educators in many parts of the world are torn between preparing language learners to pass language proficiency tests and trying to let their classrooms reflect the messiness of out-of-class communication. Because testing is “an activity which perhaps more than any other dictates what is taught” (Hall, 2014, p. 379), helping students to pass language proficiency tests seems to be a current top priority. Since globalisation “has destabilised the codes, norms, and conventions that FL [foreign language] educators relied upon to help learners be successful users of the language once they had left their classrooms” (Kramsch, 2014, p.296), the gap between what is taught in classrooms or measured in examination halls and what is used in real life situations has become much bigger. Testimonies from Study abroad students feed into this discussion. This article addresses the gap between being a language learner and a language user and the implications of this on learners’ perceptions of their language abilities, as illustrated by the story of Mahmoud, a study abroad student in the UK. It also features learner’s voice, exploring Mahmoud’s views of his previous formal language education and concludes with pedagogical implications for language educators.

Opis:
In recent years, scientific and technological advances have changed the modern battlefield, giving rise to new weapons systems and battle strategies. Apart from the challenges posed by new means and methods of warfare, soldiers are faced with an increasing need to rely on their language skills while joining multinational operations. To succeed in an international military environment, bridging the language gap is a must since it contributes to building and strengthening interoperability with NATO forces. The following article is intended to discuss the role of STANAG tests in developing language competence of Polish soldiers as reflected in the language training framework programme for the Polish military, with a focus on the speaking ability. Most importantly, the article highlights the contribution of language testing according to STANAG 6001 to developing interoperability with the Allies, presenting the main phases of the process. In the final part, the authoress attempts to determine to what extent this contribution is really made.
Ostatnie lata przyniosły ogromny postęp naukowy i technologiczny widoczny na współczesnym polu walki, pozwalający na wprowadzenie nowych systemów uzbrojenia i strategii prowadzenia działań zbrojnych. Oprócz wyzwań, jakie niosą ze sobą nowe środki i metody prowadzenia wojny, żołnierze stają przed coraz większą potrzebą wykorzystywania swoich umiejętności językowych, uczestnicząc w międzynarodowych operacjach wojskowych.

There are two main challenges with inclusive testing of EFL students with dyslexia. First, application of inclusion may, paradoxically, involve exclusion of SEN students. Second, there is evidence for inconsistent policies relating to internal and external testing practices. The present paper reports on the application of inclusive design principles to the language testing of EFL students with dyslexia. Specific cognitive demands characteristic of dyslexia are mapped against both the types of accommodations made for SEN students and the principles of inclusive design. The results show a high degree of applicability of inclusive design principles in testing EFL students with dyslexia. Specifically, the data point to a strong alignment between presentation and response accommodations and five areas of weaknesses in dyslexia. The review concludes with a discussion on the benefits and limitations of inclusive testing in dyslexia. It is hoped that this study will advise testing boards, EFL teachers, as well as education and assessment services on the application of inclusive practices to testing EFL dyslexic learners.

Over the last years, thousands of asylum seekers and refugees have arrived in Italy, including a large number of teenagers without any adult caregivers and women. A significant partof them is placed in the Italian language courses for foreigners organised by the Provincial Centre for Adult Education, commonly called CPIA (Centro Provinciale per l’Istruzione degli Adulti). Thispaper addresses the exploration of the language testing and assessment of the courses organized by this institution. With the aim of evaluating these aspects, the paper concentrates on the CPIA,its teachers, and its students. Focusing on CPIA’s language courses, we investigate the language testing and assessment carried out at the beginning and at the end of the language courses. Thanks to these observations, the paper tries to identify some critical aspects and to understand their causes.

This article discusses the methodology for investigating the effect of item format on test performance. While correlational procedures have traditionally been used in examinations of the method effect in the context of norm-referenced tests, the signifi cance of differences between means is more important for criterion-referenced testing because test diffi culty has a direct influence on classification decisions. Special attention is given to ways of controlling confounding factors in repeated-measures experimental designs.

This investigation of thanks to you in British and American usage was precipitated by a situation at an American university, in which a native Arabic speaker said thanks to you in isolation, making his intended meaning unclear. The study analyzes use of thanks to you in the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the British National Corpus to gain insights for English language instruction /assessment in the American context, as well as English-as-a-lingua-franca contexts where the majority of speakers are not native speakers of English or are speakers of different varieties of English but where American or British English are for educational purposes the standard varieties. Analysis of the two corpora revealed three functions for thanks to you common to British and American usage: expressing gratitude, communicating "because of you" positively, and communicating "because of you" negatively (as in sarcasm). A fourth use of thanks to you, thanking journalists/guests for being on news programs/talk shows, occurred in the American corpus only. Analysis indicates that felicitous use of thanks to you for each of these meanings depends on the presence of a range of factors, both linguistic and material, in the context of utterance.

The case study aims to provide insights into how a Hungarian EFL teacher used tests, assessed her young learners and gave feedback to them in the classroom. This qualitative, exploratory study was a follow-up to a large-scale project. In this single-case study, data were collected from an EFL teacher and five of her seventh graders on what tasks she used to assess them and how. The participants were interviewed. For the purpose of triangulation, the students were also audio- and video-recorded while doing four speaking tasks, and two classes were observed. The results revealed that for the teacher with decades of teaching experience there was room for improvement in her knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methodology and that some of her beliefs and practices reflected a lack of understanding how children develop. She had difficulty diagnosing her students’ strengths and weaknesses. The learners were rarely provided with feedback on their performance and language development; therefore, they did not see how much they had progressed. Low achievers had a hard time catching up with their peers; and they lagged further behind. The teacher seemed to be more interested in what her students did not know rather than focusing on what they could do.
