    This paper used the plosives’ duration of preceding (DoPV) and following (DOFV) vowels to investigate the effect of bilingualism on the pronunciation difficulties for Arabic as an L1 and English as an L2. The subjects were divided into three groups; Arabic-English bilinguals who speak Arabic as an L1 (N: 15), Arabic monolinguals (N: 15), and English native monolinguals (N: 5). The participants had a reading test as they produced the target words in carrier sentences with five repetitions. The results showed that the plosives’ DoPV and DoFV for L1 and L2 had complicated interactions categorised into four types. 1- a unidirectional impact of L1 on L2, 2. a unidirectional impact of L2 on L1, 3. bidirectional effect, and 4. Free L1-L2 interference. The outcomes additionally revealed that the bilinguals faced production difficulties that included similar and dissimilar Arabic and English plosives. Besides, the bilinguals succeeded in producing DoPV in a native-like way for dis/similar plosives. Consequently, this paper assumed that the pronunciations’ difficulties are not necessarily associated with the dis/similarity in the context of L1-L2 interaction. This paper helps Arabic-English bilinguals in developing their pronunciation by highlighting the plosives’ pronunciation complexity.

    W artykule przedstawiono pozytywne i negatywne aspekty posługiwania się językiem angielskim w programach wymiany międzynarodowej. Postawiono siedem hipotez dotyczących wykorzystywania języka angielskiego jako narzędzia w środowisku akademickim i przeanalizowano skutki jego stosowania. Na tej podstawie postawiono tezę, że stosowanie języka angielskiego jest jednym ze sposobów umożliwiających porozumiewanie się w międzynarodowym środowisku naukowym.
    Following a discussion of the positive and negative aspects of the use of English in exchange programs, seven hypotheses on the use of the vernacular in academia are analyzed and conclusions drawn, leading to seeing English as one, but not as the only necessary key for international understanding in the academic world.

    Current Third Language Acquisition research has traditionally focused on the L2 status (e.g. Hammarberg 2001, Bardel & Falk 2007) or linguistic proximity (e.g. Cenoz 2001, Westergaard, Mitrofanova, Mykhaylyk & Rodina 2016). Limited research has been conducted on the influence of the potentially significant factor of level of proficiency, and particularly where proficiency in both the L2 (Tremblay 2006, Woll 2016) and the L3 (Hammarberg 2001, Wrembel 2010) may be considered as a conditioning factor for the shape of the L3. The aim of the current study was thus to determine the influence of L2 and L3 level of proficiency (L2LoP and L3LoP) and the interaction of the two factors on the production of the L3 Spanish apico-alveolar sibilant in a group of L1 Polish, L2 English and L3 Spanish trilinguals who had different levels of overall proficiency in the two foreign languages. The parameters of the sibilant under analysis were spectral moments: centre of gravity (M1), standard deviation (M2), skewness (M3) and kurtosis (M4) in intervocalic position in two-syllable words with initial stress. The results point to the influential role of both L2LoP and L3LoP as well as their interaction on the production of the L3 Spanish sibilant. When the level of proficiency in one of the languages was low, it allowed the other language with a higher level of proficiency to exert influence on the values of the spectral moments in the L3 sibilant. This interplay of factors furthers the understanding of how levels of proficiency in the L2 and the L3 condition the developing L3.

    The article discusses the occurrence of difficulties which is unavoidable on the way to the target language. Hence, in the theoretical part, we will deal with the basic assumptions of Contrastive Analysis (CA), Error Analysis (EA), Interlanguage, competence and various sources of errors. In the following paper we will concentrate on the analysis of errors which might occur during the learning process. More specifically, we will pay attention to the problems faced by Polish learners of English. The analysis will be based on both written and spoken corpus – that is PELCRA, where one can identify various erroneous examples made by L2 learners.
    W artykule omówiono trudności, z którymi mierzą się uczący się drugiego języka. W części teoretycznej przedstawiono podstawowe założenia analizy kontrastowej (contrastive analysis), analizy błędów (error analysis), międzyjęzyka, a także i różne źródła błędów przez nich popełnianych. W artykule skoncentrowano się na analizie błędów, które mogą wystąpić podczas procesu uczenia się. Zwrócono uwagę na problemy, przed którymi stoją polscy uczniowie uczący się języka angielskiego. Analiza oparta została zarówno na korpusie pisemnym, jak i mówionym, czyli PELCRA, pozwalających zidentyfikować różne błędne przykłady użycia zaobserwowane wśród uczniów uczących się drugiego języka.

    The paper explores the origin of a foreign accent in non-native speech. Deviations from the pronun¬ciation norm in the articulation of English vowels and consonants by Ukrainian learners of English form a dynamic system of specific features correlating with the degree of foreign language competence. Phonetic interference of native language production and perception habits into the foreign language performance has its psychological and linguistic reasons. Divergence of phonological and phonetic features of native and foreign languages, automated articulations transferred into the foreign speech shape the specific character of the foreign accent. The contrastive analysis of the articulatory bases of English and Ukrainian as well as the analysis of actual phonetic deviations enabled to single out salient features of Ukrainian English accent.

    W artykule na materiale tekstów „Gazety Polskiej Bukowiny” reprezentujących pisaną odmianę polszczyzny odziedziczonej na Ukrainie przeanalizowano swoiste na tle skodyfikowanej normy ogólnopolskiej formy grzecznościowe w zakresie sposobów zwracania się do adresata, składania gratulacji i życzeń, podziękowań, a także używania słów pan/pani przed antroponimami w strukturach nieadresatywnych tekstów informacyjnych. Ujawniono przyczyny trwałości tych form w małej wspólnocie komunikatywnej: interferencja z języków wschodniosłowiańskich, oddziaływanie uzusu ogólnopolskiego, tradycyjność określonych struktur na tych trenach, także szereg czynników pozajęzykowych – np. chęć szczególnego wyrażania szacunku wobec odbiorcy, ocieplania z nim relacji, ekonomiczność wyrażeń językowych, wreszcie akceptowalność swoistych jednostek etykietalnych w ramach wspólnoty.
    In this article, the author analyses honorifics in relation to the codified general Polish norm in terms of the modes of addressing people, congratulating and well-wishing, as well as the use of the words “pan/pani” (sir/ma’am) in front of anthroponyms in non-addressable structures of information texts, on the basis of the texts of the Gazeta Polska Bukowiny periodical which represent the written version of Polish as a heritage language in Ukraine. The author reveals the reasons for the persistence of those forms among the small linguistic community: instances of interference from East Slavic languages; influence of the general Polish usage; the traditions of specific structures in those areas; as well as a series of extra-linguistic factors, e.g. the intention to express respect towards a recipient, warming relations with them, the efficiency of linguistic expressions, and, finally, the acceptability of specific etiquette units within a community.

    W artykule przedstawiono wzajemny wpływ między językami – polskim i słoweńskim – w zakresie fleksji imiennej (głównie rzeczownika i przymiotnika) oraz werbalnej w mowie dziecka dwujęzycznego we wczesnym okresie jego rozwoju, a mianowicie transfer pozytywny, jak i interferencje. Jest to przykład dwujęzyczności dziecięcej równoczesnej u chłopca żyjącego w rodzinie mieszanej, w której stosowało się różne strategie zwracania się do dziecka, głównie zasadę „jeden rodzic – jeden język” (matka – język polski, ojciec – język słoweński). Na występowanie w mowie dziecka interferencji miał wpływ również język środowiska, w którym chłopiec żył, w tym przypadku język słoweński, mogący stać się językiem dominującym. Niektóre przedstawione w artykule przykłady mowy Marka wskazują na specyficzne zjawiska językowe, które towarzyszyły jego wczesnemu rozwojowi językowemu, jak mieszanie kodów, przełączanie się z jednego języka na drugi, czy translację.
    In the article, the author presents the mutual impacts of Polish and Slovenian on one another in terms of nominal inflection (mainly of nouns and adjectives) and verb inflection in the speech of a bilingual child in his early development, specifically: positive transfer and interferences. She discusses the parallel children’s bilingualism of a boy living in a mixed family, where various strategies of addressing the child were used, mainly the rule “one parent, one language” (mother – Polish, father – Slovenian). The presence of interference in the child’s speech also caused by the language of the environment in which the boy lived, i.e. the Slovenian language, which could become the dominant one. Some of the examples of Marko’s speech presented in the article indicate special linguistic phenomena which existed in his early linguistic development, e.g., code mixing, switching from one language to the other, and translation.
