Opis:
The article presents the results of simulations research carried out, using Finite Element Method. The simulations were made in the Abaqus software. Studies were related to the reduction and improving of stress distribution in the connecting rod of opposite pistons combustion engine. The connecting rod has been developed in a 3D environment in the Catia software, then imported into the simulation tool, in which stress tests were performed. The connecting rod was subjected to a compression and stretching tests. Boundary conditions of forces used in simulation tests have been developed on the basis of the dynamic model created in the MSC Adams software. The study included nine iterations of geometric changes of connecting rod. Shape as well as properties such as parametric dimensions (rod length) were changed. The changes were dictated by the reduction of the maximum values of the stresses and the size of the fields with large stress values. As a result of the simulations, the improvement of the connecting rod strength was obtained by its geometrical change (which was obtained by reducing the stress fields).

Opis:
A gamma-type Stirling engine, based on a dual flywheels’ concept, was designed and fabricated. Optimized design of the engine, with connecting rods, was introduced to achieve a steady state of the Stirling engine cycle. Performances of the engine were therefore presented in terms of piston motion, inertia force, angular speed, pressure-volume diagram and temperature difference. It was found that optimum length of 45 mm from the connecting rod was able to reach the maximum output mechanical speed of 738 rpm at the maximum inertia force of 0.5 N. The engine offered thermal efficiency of 46.15% and total output power of 1.21 W under the temperature difference of 267 K. In the future, this design is expected to prove useful for applications in portable generators.

Opis:
The article presents the results of simulations research carried out, using Finite Element Method. The simulations were made in the Abaqus software. Calculations were made on the connecting rod of opposed piston engine. The connecting rod was subjected to a compression tests. Different versions of the boundary conditions in the form of load forces and pressure distribution acting on the small end of the connecting rod were presented. Depending on the load distribution acting on the connecting rod small end, different distributions of stresses in the connecting rod geometry were obtained. All studies were performed for the same geometry, the same mesh grid, and for the same value of compressive force (research could be considered as comparable). Changing the size and distribution of stresses in the connecting rod, evidence the impact of the adopted boundary conditions of the load distribution on the calculation results. It is important for the use of modern simulation tools in the design process of new mechanical parts.

Opis:
Testing of materials properties is usually a discipline for the quality assurance during manufacturing processes. In condition monitoring, certification or upgrading of existing plants and in failure analysis similar benefits from non-destructive testing of materials properties can be achieved. Another benefit from the Non-Destructive Metallography (NDM) is that the test can be made on-site. NDM is a well established and proven tool to help determine the integrity of generator and hydro turbine components during their life-cycle in power plant environments. On-site metallography of components makes it possible to evaluate the microstructure of materials. It allows microstructural analysis of large components that are difficult to move or not permitted to be destructively tested, enabling rapid evaluation of the material. Here are monitored the microstructural changes and crack detection in St 35 connecting rod steel after approximately 15 years in service. The paper includes a short description of the replica method as a technique for microstructural examination of components by using non-destructive testing method.

Opis:
The mathematical model for calculating the response time of the compression ratio of the mechanism for compression ratio changing (MCRC) is presented in this article. This revealed the influence of various engine factors with the connecting rod and crank mechanism (CRCM) on the operation of the MCRC (for example, the rate of the compression ratio change). The results of the study of the operation of the MCRC indicate a strong influence of the values (relative area of flow passage of channels) and р (pressure) on the response time τ in the field of their small values. This indicates that with insignificant changes of the area of flow passage of channel of the hydraulic lock and the minute oil pressure in the cavities, a significant response rate of the MCRC is ensured. The results demonstrate the possibility of speedy compression ratio change in the engine with the MCRC. Calculation studies showed that the mechanism full operation occurs quickly (0.02 s per unit εx), which indicates the expediency of using such a high-pressure pump in a four-stroke gasoline engine with CRCM. The mechanism movable body complete movement (S = 4 mm) at the oil temperature in the hydraulic system of 45°C and pressure on the body of p = 60 bar are stated to occur for 0.2 s.
