Opis:
Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is a minimally invasive technique frequently employed in neurosurgery OR oncology, and it has applications in psychiatric patients as well. While it is commonly used in conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder, GKRS also has efficacy in treating major depression disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder and anorexia nervosa. Promising outcomes have been observed, particularly in cases resistant to conventional treatment, leading to significant improvements in the patients' quality of life. Severe adverse effects from GKRS procedures are rare. To enhance our understanding of the utilization of GKRS in psychiatry, further extensive research, especially through double-blinded studies involving larger cohorts, is imperative. Determining the ideal volume and radiation dose for radiosurgical capsulotomy remains a key topic of research. When it comes to psychiatric neurosurgical procedures, the decision-making process should be personalized for each patient, taking all relevant factors into consideration.

Opis:
Belt conveyors are commonly employed in manufacturing and excavation processes. One of the basic components of such equipment are flat transport belts which can be monolithic or composite. In both cases, the belts are most often made of plastic materials. The manufacturing process of flat transport belts usually involves two stages. During the first stage, belts of very high length of up to several hundred meters are manufactured with use of the correct technology for a given belt type. In order to be usable in the finished conveyor system, correct length of such belts is to be achieved. Considering the above, the subsequent stage of manufacturing requires cutting the belts down to the appropriate length and very often joining the ends to form a closed loop with specific circumference. In an attempt to answer the demand of the manufacturing industry, the authors took up design works on an automated device for crosswise cutting of monolithic and composite belts. This article presents three construc-tion concepts of the authors’ own design together with an analysis of construction and operating factors which affect their usability. The presented discussion leads to selecting one of the solutions for which a drive system concept designed by the authors is proposed. Additionally, an analysis of the influence of the cutting knife geometry on cutting force is provided.

Opis:
In 2012, series of archaeological rescue excavations were carried out at Zagórze, due to the construction of the Świnna Poręba retention reservoir on the Skawa river in Wadowice district (Lesser Poland voivodeship). During this research, in one of the excavated sites – no. 8 – a flint tool was discovered below the top of the slope in the diluvial cover, in the secondary position. The preliminary analysis showed that it is a so-called flame knife, characteristic tool of the Corded Ware culture. Sometime later, feature no. 894 was discovered, located approximately 35 meters from the aforementioned flame knife, at the top of the slope. Five fragments of pottery were found in this feature. Four of them have been classified as fragments of CWC ceramics, including fragments of a beaker and an amphora. On the basis of these finds, as well as comparisons to other sites, two hypotheses were formulated regarding the nature of the discovered feature: a flat grave or a feature of a settlement character. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis (including use-wear analysis of the flame knife) and interpretation of these discovered finds.

Introduction: Postoperative injury of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve is considered a complication in neck dissection and can be related to different factors including traction, devascularisation or conduction block due to diathermy. Material and Methods: A prospective, crossover study including patients treated via bilateral selective neck dissection level IIa during a 12-month period, was performed to evaluate efficacy of the Hayes-Martin manoeuvre to prevent nerve injury during use of cold or monopolar diathermy dissection. Results: 20 patients met the inclusion criteria (40 neck dissections). Just one case of right temporal MMN weakness in the postoperative period was observed (1/40 = 2.5%). There were no cases of permanent marginal mandibular nerve weakness when using the Hayes-Martin manoeuvre. Conclusion: he Hayes-Martin manoeuvre is a safe method to preserve MMN during neck dissection level IIa, regardless of the type of dissection.

Opis:
Fibre optic microlenses are small optical elements formed on the end-faces of optical fibres. Their dimensions range from a few tens to hundreds of micrometres. In the article, four optical fibre microlenses are modelled and analysed. Microlenses are used for light beam manipulation and quantitative metrics are needed to evaluate the results, for example, the size of focusing spot or intensity distribution. All four lenses tested are made of rods of the same refractive index; they were welded to a single-mode fibre. Two modelling methods were used to analyse the lenses: ray-tracing and finite-difference time-domain. The ray-tracing algorithm moves rays from one plane to another and refracts them on the surfaces. Finite-difference time-domain consists of calculating Maxwell’s equations by replacing spatial and temporal derivatives by quotients of finite differences. In this paper, the results of the microlenses analyses obtained from ray-tracing and finite-difference timedomain methods were compared. Both mets of analysis showed the presence of undesirable side lobes related to lens design, namely rods too long for lens fabrication. The test results were compared with the measurements made with the knife-edge method. The use of a single tool to determine parameters of an optical fibre lens does not allow for precise determination of its properties. It is necessary to use different tools and programs. This allows a complete analysis of the beam parameters, letting us find the causes of technical issues that limit the performance of the lenses.

Opis:
In the initial position in the process of roll ginning, the seed is drawn to the slot of the contact gap of the knife-drum due to the tension of the fibers. Subsequently, the seed is struck with a certain impulse. The separation of the fibers from the seed after the impact of the beater occurs sequentially, not simultaneously. As a result of theoretical and experimental studies, the optimum frequency of the shock pulse on the seed (f = 18-20) was found to be the most technologically successful in terms of providing the best quality indicators of seeds and fibers. Beating in the resonance mode allows to reduce the magnitude of the shock impulse on the seed, leading to a reduction in the degree of damage to the seeds. At this moment, the seeds at the end of the strand move only under the action of an elastic restoring force. The active part of the fiber bundle section in a dynamic process can be as little as 0.001 or less. The average value of the compliance coefficient for the raw cotton variety BA-440 was determined experimentally. This allowed to determine the stiffness coefficient of the volatiles indirectly. According to the parameters obtained, the dynamic state of the system practically falls into the region of parametric resonance, where the motion is unstable. This means that the damaged seeds at the end of the strand enlarge significantly after the impact of the beater, causing the seeds to separate from the fibers.

Opis:
Introduction: Malignant gliomas (HGG) are the most common primary malignant brain tumors arising from glial cells. From among HGG, glioblastoma is the most common and the most malignant histological subtype, with only a 27% 2-year survival rate. Current standard medical treatment of malignant gliomas is still not satisfactory and may need some development and modification. We presented and discussed the achievements of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brodno Masovian Hospital in the treatment of malignant gliomas. Material and methods: We step by step presented and discussed the policy in the treatment of malignant gliomas. We showed all steps starting from the preparation of surgery (e.g. neuroimaging) and finishing on the presentation of the development of perioperative management – from intraoperative electrical stimulation mapping and monitoring which is nowadays already standard method to convection-enhanced delivery (CED) and gamma knife (GK) which are new and promising methods in the treatment of glioblastoma. Results: All surgical methods described in this manuscript were introduced to achieve a maximal and safe resection of a malignant glioma. CED and GK are the last-resort methods for patients with recurrent HGG. Discussion: Department of Neurosurgery at Brodno Masovian Hospital deals with all types of brain tumors, including all types of high-grade gliomas. As the first Department in Europe with close cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery in San Francisco, we have started local infusions of drugs directly to the tumor in the real time of magnetic field, and we think that this technology may change all approaches to the treatment of high-grade gliomas.

Objective: The aim of the study was to estimate usability of the piezoelectric knife in larynx surgery. Prove that the piezoelectric staff can be used to do any different shape incision within the larynx cartilages. Material and methods: 35 patients hospitalized in our Department in 2014–2016 were enrolled in our study. 24 patients went vertical partial laryngectomy and 1 patient went horizontal partial laryngectomy because of larynx cancer. 5 patients went partial laryngectomy because of low stage of piriformis recess cancer. Piezoelectric staff was used to do thyroidectomy and resection of thyroid cartilage suspected of carcinomatosis infiltration. The rest 4 patients had done widening of larynx lumen due to larynx stenosis or slenderness. The piezoelectric tool was used to do different incision or resection within the larynx cartilages in case of widening lumen of the larynx. Results: The larynx cartilages, especially thyroid cartilage could be cut in different shapes using piezoelectric tools. The usage of this equipment causes the minimal loss and small destruction of local healthy tissues. Conclusions: The Piezoelectric instrument is useful instrument suit to operate within larynx cartilages. Exchangeable tip available in different shapes enables different resections of cartilages. Using the piezoelectric staff we can remove pathological tissue with minimal local destruction. Our observation shows that larynx operation with a usage of the piezoelectric knife is safe and effective. Current English literature does not describe usage piezoelectric tools in larynx surgery. It is essential to do more observation about that type of operations.

This paper concerns the analysis of experimental data, verifying the applicability of signal analysis techniques for condition monitoring of a packaging machine. In particular, the activity focuses on the cutting process that divides a continuous flow of packaging paper into single packages. The cutting process is made by a steel knife driven by a hydraulic system. Actually, the knives are frequently substituted, causing frequent stops of the machine and consequent lost production costs. The aim of this paper is to develop a diagnostic procedure to assess the wearing condition of blades, reducing the stops for maintenance. The packaging machine was provided with pressure sensor that monitors the hydraulic system driving the blade. Processing the pressure data comprises three main steps: the selection of scalar quantities that could be indicative of the condition of the knife. A clustering analysis was used to set up a threshold between unfaulted and faulted knives. Finally, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model was applied to classify the technical condition of knife during its lifetime.

The paper presents the influence of cutting conditions of black radish guillotine knife on specific cutting energy value. The tests were carried out using the texture meter: Texture Analyser TA.XTplus Stable Micro Systems. The structure of the black radish is heterogeneous and, therefore, in order to study the specific cutting energy of black radish its parenchyma was taken from a few specific places. The samples were cut with a longitudinal and transverse orientation of the fibers relative to movement of the working tool. The cutting process was carried at the knives wedge angles: 2.5°; 5°; 7.5°; 10°; 12.5°; 15°, the knives moved at the speed of 0.83 mm·s-1. The results were statistically analyzed using the program Statistica 8.0. The statistical analysis showed the impact of the place of sampling, direction of fibers in the black radish parenchyma samples and knife wedge angle on the specific cutting energy. The black radish parenchyma samples obtained from the core of the top layer showed the highest specific energy of cutting. Furthermore, the specific cutting energy showed higher value when the orientation of fibers was in the transverse direction rather than longitudinal. The highest value of the specific cutting energy was obtained for the cutting knife wedge angle of 15°, and the lowest for the knife with β = 2.5° wedge angle.

The article presents the methodology and results of measurement of the unitary energy in cutting black radish. The values of the unitary energy of cutting the root parenchyma of black radish sampled in several areas were analysed. To compare the values of the unitary cutting energy related to the differences in the structure of the black radish root, the samples were cut at the longitudinal and transverse orientation of the fibres relative to the movement of the working tool. The cutting process was carried out using knives with a sharpening angle of 5°, 10°, and 15° and cutting velocity values of 100 mm·s-1, 200 mm·s-1, 300 mm·s-1, and 400 mm·s-1. The results obtained were subjected to mathematical analysis in Statistica 8.0 software. The statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the value of the unitary energy and sampling site, the knife sharpening angle and the velocity of knife movement. The highest value of the unitary cutting energy was obtained at a sharpening angle of β=15° and the lowest value was observed when the knife with the β=5° sharpening angle was used. The unitary cutting energy decreased with the increase in the knife movement velocity.
