Opis:
Teaching of the Sciences recently emphasizes more than in the past the importance of the student’s experience in inquiry, in different places in the world in general and in Israel in particular. This article describes the process of scientific inquiry and the change of the perception of the role, both of the student and of the traditional teacher, in the performance of the inquiry process. The article presents different initiatives that integrate the learning of inquiry in the teaching of physics in the high school in Israel. These initiatives show that the inquiry laboratories have the potential to promote meaningful learning among the students, to increase the depth of their understanding of the scientific concepts and the understanding of the nature of science. The article focuses on ‘Inquiry Physics’ program for students and presents the goals, the target audience, the time framework, and the structure of this program. The program aims to assemble the different initiatives under one framework and to provide them with an appropriate place in the teaching of physics. The learning method of inquiry is now fledgling in the State of Israel and mainly in the knowledge realm of physics. Therefore, exposure to this program may contribute to the body of knowledge on the characteristics of learning and teaching through inquiry in general and on the teaching of physics in particular.

This research aimed to examine the strategy effectiveness of the Integrating Inquiry-based learning and Student Teams Achievement Division (INSTAD) compared to other strategies: Inquiry; Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD); and conventional learning, in order to narrow Upper Academic Ability (AA) and Lower Academic Ability (AB) science students’ learning outcome gap. As many as 136 research subject, consisting of AA and AB 7th grade students in equal numbers were selected using stratified random sampling from 27 State Junior High Schools in Surakarta, Indonesia. This research employed 4x2 factorial design as a method. Students’ learning results were measured with an essay test, then analyzed using Anakova. Findings demonstrate that INSTAD is the optimum strategy to constrict AA and AB students’ science grade point average, compared to Inquiry, STAD, and conventional learning.

The aim of this study was to explore: 1) whether the student-teachers (as researchers) enter into a dialogue with their learners (the researched) in the course of their research; 2) what is the nature of this dialogue; 3) what role this dialogue plays in the teachers’ and the learners’ lives. In this study I draw on teachers’ narratives which were stimulated by questions which emerged after having read the research chapters of MA theses written in the field of EFL learning and teaching.

NARRATIVE INQUIRY
Opis:
Polish accession to the European Union in 2004 saw migration to the UK increase exponentially. However, the recent climate in Britain has become one of a harsher anti-immigrant discourse. This paper is based on findings of my doctoral study exploring identity construction amongst Polish-born adolescents in the UK in the light of such negative discourses. Here, I see identity as contingent, (re) negotiated in different contexts; I also draw on the theory of positioning, whereby individuals adopt certain subject positions even as they are positioned differently by others. Fieldwork for the study took place in January-May 2016. A narrative inquiry approach was used; interviews were held with eleven participants aged 11–16, living in small Polish communities. Findings suggest that while the adolescents report having been subjected to anti-Polish bullying, they refuse to tell stories of victimhood. Rather, they present themselves as agentive individuals who respond to attacks by asserting their Polish identity and reinforcing their right to be in the UK. Thus, despite the antagonistic discourses surrounding Polish migration to the UK, these adolescents demonstrate the positive way that they are confronting their present difficulties and approaching their future.

The presented study aims to compare occupational stress of 50 teachers and 56 firefighters. Both these groups are laden with high exposure to work-related stress. For assessing the occupational load the Meister questionnaire was used. We found that teachers percieved their occupational stress worse than firefighters and reached the 2nd degree of load. They complained mostly about the factor of overload and factors of the stress reactions – fatigue, mental overload and unacceptability to perform pedagogical work in the same intensity for a long time. Firefighters achieved better results (1st degree of load), even better than the population norm. An explanation may be found in the fact that firefighters represent a selected population of emotionally, psychically and physically resistant individuals.

In this article, I describe how I teach graduate students who are in-service teachers in our master’s literacy program on how to facilitate inquiry-based learning among school children. This type of learning concentrates on students’ curiosity, asking questions, and investigating problems in collaboration. The teacher in such learning is more of a facilitator working towards helping children in becoming more independent learners. In my role as a teacher educator and coach I have used several resources to develop my own practice of teaching inquiry learning since 2015. I describe how I structure my graduate students’ tutoring for inquiry and how I teach the ways of utilizing literacy teaching strategies and routines, such as shared reading and accountable talk, in order to facilitate children’s knowledge building and their increasing independence in collaborative work. I also describe how my research interests that concentrate around investigating innovative inquiry-based learning spaces has informed this teaching.

Focusing on identity formation amongst child migrants, this paper reflects on the experiences of unaccompanied minors sent from Britain to Australia in the 20th Century. Between 1947-1967 3170 children are understood to have been exported to Australia, making Britain the only country in the world known to have exported children during peace time. Most of these children came from British care homes to which they had been entrusted by their families or social workers. The majority of exported children were from working class backgrounds and many still had living parents, or other close family, in the UK. Children as young as four were sent to train as farm labourers and domestic staff, simultaneously relieving the burden of providing for these children from the British Government, and increasing the white population in ‘underpopulated’ Australia. The paper presents thematic analysis of four published sources produced for a wide readership: two published memoirs and two young adult novels. The paper seeks to reflect on the impact of forced transnational migration on the children’s identity formation as new Australians.

The article is based on fundamental social-cognitive theories that are based on a natural way of cognition of the world. The research process itself (the formation of hypotheses and predictions and their subsequent verification, the formation of conclusions that are supported by the facts, generalization) contributes to a modification of preconcepts and the development of the specific cognitive abilities of students. Moreover, it is also a matter of the development of the willingness to cooperate, development of enthusiasm and interest in exploring of the world around them. The aim of the paper is to clarify the theoretical bases of the inquiry-based approach in technical education and didactic specifications of anchoring of the sequence of the educational steps in the technical education. In the empirical part, the article is focused on teachers’ competences to the realization of the inquiry-based instruction.

In a historical moment characterised by uncertainty and concern about the future, autobiographical memories can be a source of inspiration for orientation and learning to change. In social work, this possibility becomes a necessity that cannot be postponed, especially where the usual patterns of action prove inadequate to deal with the problems generated by the crisis. Within the framework of a systemic epistemology and complexity, this contribution describes a cooperative inquiry involving some coordinators of disability services in Lombardy, Northern Italy. The re-enactment of autobiographical memories was used as a basis to explore themes related to the professional practices of these coordinators. The memories, recalled and re-signified within the training device, facilitated the opening to a complex thought, in which certainty and uncertainty and different ways of knowledge are connected.

Opis:
Inquiry based science education has been more and more popular strategy in teaching sciences in recent years. Transregional pressure put by international, standardized knowledge and skills tests (e.g. PISA) to converge curricula (Rundgren 2015) of diferent European states paradoxically helps to promote the open inquiry method which involves the student in the teaching process. Earlier research done in many countries such as Turkey, Israel, Sweden, The Czech Republic (Heinz et al. 2017), Ireland (Dunne et al. 2013) or The Netherlands (Uum van Martina et al. 2016) shows the increase of interest in IBSE both in Europe and in the world. Teaching geography in Polish primary schools follows international educational trends. This study analyses several proposals of educational activities connected with Space which support geography teaching. All of them are conducted with using open inquiry method, which is recommended in New National Curriculum of geography (Core Curriculum, 2017, Geography-classes V-VIII).
