Introduction. Inaudible but ubiquitous environmental infrasound undoubtedly affects the frame of mind and health of humans. Objective. The object of the study is to prove that civil engineering objects can be sources of infrasound, and a review of the literature on effects of infrasound on the health of people and animals. Methods. Computer simulation of an air flow around a typical element of outdoor infrastructure. The simulation was carried out using the author’s computer programme, based on Discrete Vortex Method algorithms. Results and conclusions. The numerical experiment clearly proved that industrial objects can be sources of infrasonic noise during windy weather. The picture of air flow around a cylinder shows that regular turbulent motion is a source of sound with one dominating frequency. The sound once generated propagate far from its source. Frequency and intensity of the sound depends on wind velocity and shape of the object. Further research in this area are advisable.

Opis:
A significant threat to critical infrastructure of computer systems has a destructive impact caused by infrasound waves. It is shown that the known infrasound generations are based on using the following devices: a Helmholtz Resonator, Generation by using a Pulsating Sphere such as Monopolies, Rotor-type Radiator, Resonating Cylinder, VLF Speaker, Method of Paired Ultrasound Radiator, and airscrew. Research of these devices was made in this paper by revealing their characteristics, main advantages and disadvantages. A directional pattern of infrasound radiation and a graph of dependence of infrasound radiation from the consumed power was constructed. Also, during the analysis of these devices, there was proven a set of basic parameters, the values of which make it possible to characterize their structural and operational characteristics. Then approximate values of the proposed parameters of each those considered devices, were calculated. A new method was developed for evaluating the effectiveness of infrasound generation devices based on the definition of the integral efficiency index, which is calculated using the designed parameters. An example of practical application of the derived method, was shown. The use of the method makes it possible, taking into account the conditions and requirements of the infrasound generation devices construction, to choose from them the most efficient one.

Introduction: The agricultural tractor is one of the most commonly used vehicles on farms and one of the most prominent sources of noise. This article presents an exemplary assessment of the audible and infrasonic noise levels in the cabins of selected modern wheeled agricultural tractors. Materials and Methods: Operator-perceived audible and infrasonic noise levels in the cabins were examined for 20 types of modern tractors during typical conditions of work. The tractors had been in use for no longer than 3 years, with rated power between 96 kW and 227 kW, designed and produced by world-renowned companies. Noise level measurements were performed in accordance with PN-EN ISO 9612:2011 (ISO 9612:2009). Results: Audible noise levels (A-weighted) ranged from 62.1 to 87.4 dB-A (average: 68.2 to 83.8 dB-A) for different work tasks. The factors influencing noise levels include performed tasks, soil, weather conditions and the skills of individual drivers. In spectrum analysis, the highest noise levels occurred at frequencies 250 Hz, 1 and 2 kHz. Infrasound noise levels (G-weighted) ranged from 87.3 to 111.3 dB-G. The driver-experienced exposure to infrasound was found to increase significantly when the vehicle was in motion. Conclusions: Average audible noise levels have no potential to adversely affect the hearing organ during tasks performed inside the closed cabins of the analysed modern agricultural tractors. Due to the relatively low audible noise levels inside the cabins of modern agricultural tractors, non-auditory effects are the only adverse symptoms that can develop. Modern agricultural tractors emit considerable infrasonic noise levels. All tractors introduced into the market should be subjected to tests with regard to infrasonic noise levels.

Ground vehicles are the main sources of noise and infrasounds in residential areas. Numerous published works are devoted to the studies of audible sound, its sources in vehicle, and development of measures to its reduction. The authors believe that the problem of infrasound occurrence and propagation in residential areas and – hence – its negative impact on humans and ambient environment is underestimated. Development of predictions and experimental methods of studying the infrasound generating mechanism and environmental monitoring of this negative factor are an urgent issue. A significant portion of acoustic emission from a vehicle comprises infrasound and low frequency range. Internal and external infrasound of vehicle were measured. A prediction model was proposed and the influence of vehicle design features on the infrasound level was estimated. Predictions of the external infrasound generating the mechanism of vehicles reveal that its frequency and level depend on driving speed, drag coefficient, vehicle body length, and Strouhal number Wheels, which execute rotation and progressive movement in airstream, are important sources of vehicle infrasound. Five wheel harmonics were calculated for motor vehicles at various driving speeds, the existing dependences are detected. It was demonstrated that the regulatory levels of infrasound can be exceeded only in residential areas adjacent to traffic flow with driving speeds higher than 80 km/h. The results of field studies of infrasound level on the streets of Moscow were presented. Recommendations on the development of environmental monitoring and main approaches to reduce infrasound in urban environment were given.

Opis:
Infrasounds are very common in the natural environment. There are various opinions about their harmfulness or lack of harmfulness. One of the reasons of increasing interest in this issue is that there are more and more wind farms appearing close to building estates which are undoubtedly a source of infrasound. It is reasonable to present the results of research of infrasound noise connected not only with wind farms. In this study own results of research of infrasound noise related to daily human activity are presented. The measurements were carried out during housework, travel to the office or shop, and during shopping. The results are shown in the form of values of equivalent levels and 1/3-octave analyses. Taking into consideration the natural sources of infrasound in the environment, the measurements were conducted during both windy and windless weather. On the basis of the results of the measurements it was possible to define the daily exposure to infrasound noise. Those results were also compared with the available in the literature threshold values sensed by people. Estimated level of exposure to noise beyond workplace together with the level of exposure to noise at work enables to define daily exposure level, which means a better assessment of risk of health loss. Increasing social awareness of acoustic threat in everyday life allows us to identify the problem and at the same time improve the quality of rest and efficiency at work.

Complaints and awareness about environmental low-frequency (LF) noise and infrasound (IS) have increased in recent years, but knowledge about perceptual mechanisms is limited. To evaluate the use of the brain’s frequency-following response (FFR) as an objective correlate of individual sensitivity to IS and LF, we recorded the FFR to monaurally presented IS (11 Hz) and LF (38 Hz) tones over a 30-phon range for 11 subjects. It was found that 11-Hz FFRs were often significant already at ~0 phon, steeply grew to 20 phon, and saturated above. In contrast, the 38-Hz FFR growth was relatively shallow and continued to 60 phon. Furthermore, at the same loudness level (30 phon), the 11-Hz FFR strength was significantly larger (4.5 dB) than for 38 Hz, possibly reflecting a higher phase synchronization across the auditory pathway. Overall, unexpected inter-individual variability as well as qualitative differences between the measured FFR growth functions and typical loudness growth make interpretation of the FFR as objective correlate of IS and LF sensitivity difficult.

Opis:
Infrasound signal classification is vital in geological hazard monitoring systems. The traditional classification approach extracts the features and classifies the infrasound events. However, due to the manual feature extraction, its classification performance is not satisfactory. To deal with this problem, this paper presents a classification model based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and convolutional neural network (CNN). Firstly, the infrasound signal is processed by VMD to eliminate the noise. Then fast Fourier transform (FFT) is applied to convert the reconstructed signal into a frequency domain image. Finally, a CNN model is established to automatically extract the features and classify the infrasound signals. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy of the proposed classification model is higher than the other model by nearly 5%. Therefore, the proposed approach has excellent robustness under noisy environments and huge potential in geophysical monitoring.

Opis:
A diagnostic technique based on independent component analysis (ICA), fast Fourier transform (FFT), and support vector machine (SVM) is suggested for effectively extracting signal features in infrasound signal monitoring. Firstly, ICA is proposed to separate the source signals of mixed infrasound sources. Secondly, FFT is used to obtain the feature vectors of infrasound signals. Finally, SVM is used to classify the extracted feature vectors. The approach integrates the advantages of ICA in signal separation and FFT to extract the feature vectors. An experiment is conducted to verify the benefits of the proposed approach. The experiment results demonstrate that the classification accuracy is above 98.52% and the run time is only 2.1 seconds. Therefore, the proposed strategy is beneficial in enhancing geophysical monitoring performance.

Introduction and objectives. Although exposure to audible noise has been examined in many publications, the sources of infrasound in agriculture have not been fully examined and presented. The study presents the assessment of exposure to infrasound from many sources at workplaces in agriculture with examples of possible ergonomic and health consequences caused by such exposure. Materials and method. Workers’-perceived infrasonic noise levels were examined for 118 examples of moving and stationary agricultural machines (modern and old cab-type tractors, old tractors without cabins, small tractors, grinders, chargers, forage mixers, grain cleaners, conveyors, bark sorters and combine-harvesters). Measurements of infrasound were taken with the use of class 1 instruments (digital sound analyzer DSA-50 digital and acoustic calibrator). Noise level measurement swere performed in accordance with PN-Z-01338:2010, PN-EN ISO 9612:2011 and ISO 9612:2009. Results and conclusions. The most intense sources of infrasound in the study were modern and old large size types agricultural machinery (tractors, chargers and combined-harvesters, and stationary forage mixers with ventilation). The G-weighted infrasound levels were significant and at many analyzed workplaces stayed within or exceeded the occupational exposure limit (LG eq, 8h = 102 dB) when the duration of exposure is longer than 22 min./8-hours working day (most noisy – modern cab-type tractors), 46 min./8 hours working day (most noisy – old type cab-tractors), 73 min./8 hours working day (most noisy – old tractors without cabins), 86 min./8-hours working day (most noisy – combine-harvesters) and 156 min./8 hours working day (most noisy – stationary forage mixers with ventilation). All measured machines generated infrasonic noise exceeded the value LG eq, Te = 86 dB (occupational exposure limit for workplaces requiring maintained mental concentration). A very important harmful factor is infrasound exposure for pregnant women and adolescents at workplaces in agriculture. Very valuable work can be technical limiting exposure to infrasound from new and used agricultural machinery. The technical limitation of infrasound caused by both old and new agricultural machinery can be invaluable from the work point of view.

The paper presents a comparison analysis of the noise generated by wind turbines and the one generated by a ventilation shaft of a working coal mine. The aim of the research was to compare the frequency and amplitude distribution of those sources, especially in the infra range. The ultimate aim it is evaluate possible environmental impact on human annoyance or severity. During the research noise signals were recorded utilizing low frequency microphones, shielded by windscreens. Microphones were localized at the heights of 0.0 m, 1.5 m (approximate location of a human ear in a standing position) and 4 m. Additionally, a measurement position of a microphone in relation to the ground surface was observed. Measurements at ground level were performed according to the standard PN-EN 61400-11:2013-07 and in vertical position, where the microphone was mounted "upside down" with the grid flush with the board. The possible influence of wind speed was also monitored. The results of the measurements are discussed.

Chronic heart failure is a syndrome consisting in clinical symptoms that arise as a result of complications of many disease entities. According to the definition it is a condition in which, as a consequence of permanent heart dysfunction, cardiac output is reduced in relation to tissues’ metabolic demand. This results in subjective symptoms or proper cardiac output is sustained over higher filling pressure of the left heart ventricle. The occurrence of disease among adults in Europe and North America is 0.4-2%. Heart dysfunction detected by echocardiography appears with the frequency of 3%, and in people over 60 years of age it doubles with each decade of life, reaching 10% after 80 years of age. The aim of the study is to make an acquisition of fremitus in apex beat place and quantitative evaluation of some of their features which are correlated with the advanced syndrome. We have built the apparatus for the heart signal recording and proposed the original method of its analysis based on the theory of chaos and recurrence plots. It gave us, on the group of 85 patients, sensitivity equal to 0.896 specificity equal to 0.676 and the accuracy of diagnostics of the chronic heart failure equal up to 80%.

This paper presents an overview of the indices used in evaluating ILFN noise, based on C and G weighting curves and LC-LA difference parameter, as well as curves compared to the loudness threshold curve. The research section includes measurement results of wind turbine (WT) noise along with proposed indicators for evaluating this noise in the infrasound and low-frequency bands at distances of 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m from the turbine. The results obtained indicate low noise levels in the infrasound band, lower than the threshold curves from a dozen or so dB in the upper part of this band to nearly 60 dB in the lower part. The LC-LA indicator has been shown to be of poor utility for evaluating low-frequency noise, with the LG indicator reasonably useful for evaluating infrasound noise.
