Opis:
Gamma-ray tomography experiments have been carried out to detect spatial patterns in the porosity, in a 0.27 m diameter packed steel column using a first generation computed tomography (CT) system. The CT scanner consists of a NaI(Tl) detector 5.08 cm in diameter, and an encapsulated 137Cs (3.7 GBq) radioactive source, located opposite to the center of the detector. The detector and the source, mounted on a fixed support and the column, can rotated and dislocate by two stepping motors controlled through a microprocessor. Different sizes of stainless steel Raschig rings (12.6, 37.9 and 76 mm) have been examined. The primary objective of this work is to detect spatial patterns and statistical information on porosity variation in packed distillation columns. Horizontal scans, at different vertical positions of the packed bed were made for each size of Raschig rings. Radial porosity variation within the packed bed has been determined. This study has demonstrated that the porosity and its spatial distribution in a metallic packed column can be measured with adequate spatial resolution using the gamma-ray tomography technique. After validation of this first generation CT, the turntable design to rotate and dislocate the 60Co or 137Cs sealed gamma-ray sources and multidetector array for the third generation industrial computed tomography was also developed.

Opis:
The paper describes the architecture and the use case of the developed Modelbox system for sensitivity analysis (SA), uncertainty analysis (UA) and the subsequent optimization of industrial processes. The proposed solution addresses the most common practical and technical problems encountered by researchers and engineers when performing sensitivity analysis. It combines the functions from the numerical toolbox with a simulation management system. Maintaining usability and a good user experience while managing complex investigations of time-consuming industrial process simulations is a very important feature of the system. Several improvements were introduced to optimize the computation time of analysis/modelling tasks, including the automatization of distributed calculations, persistent, transparent caching of simulation data and duration estimations from collected statistics. The system has the ability to perform remote, parallel, asynchronous computations of both analytic algorithms and numerical simulations. The system is dynamically scalable horizontally by using serverless computing endpoints and thus it can be easily adapted to the user’s current needs in a flexible way. Modelbox provides web-based access to analysis/modelling tasks from sampling, SA/UA, optimization to metamodelling. It is extended with numerous interactive visualization components for effective results control. In addition, to access data from the completed analysis, the system supports convergence tracking for SA estimates and intermediate optimization results. The process of controlled cooling of rails was considered as a case study. The formulated optimization task was to find a combination of process parameters that ensures a minimum volume fraction of bainite along with required interlamellar spacing and optimal homogeneity of hardness. Different sensitivity analysis methods were used to evaluate the significance of all variables with respect to their influence on the model output.

Opis:
Industrial processes such as batch distillation columns, supply chain, level control etc. integrate dead times in the wake of the transportation times associated with energy, mass and information. The dead time, the cause for the rise in loop variability, also results from the process time and accumulation of time lags. These delays make the system control poor in its asymptotic stability, i.e. its lack of self-regulating savvy. The haste of the controller’s reaction to disturbances and congruence with the design specifications are largely influenced by the dead time; hence it exhorts a heed. This article is aimed at answering the following question: “How can a fractional order proportional integral derivative controller (FOPIDC) be tuned to become a perfect dead time compensator apposite to the dead time integrated industrial process?” The traditional feedback controllers and their tuning methods do not offer adequate resiliency for the controller to combat out the dead time. The whale optimization algorithm (WOA), which is a nascent (2016 developed) swarm-based meta-heuristic algorithm impersonating the hunting maneuver of a humpback whale, is employed in this paper for tuning the FOPIDC. A comprehensive study is performed and the design is corroborated in the MATLAB/Simulink platform using the FOMCON toolbox. The triumph of the WOA tuning is demonstrated through the critical result comparison of WOA tuning with Bat and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm-based tuning methods. Bode plot based stability analysis and the time domain specification based transient analysis are the main study methodologies used.
