Opis:
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) composites are very important biomaterials, which can be applied in various life areas. HAP composite with white clay was prepared and studied using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), potentiometric titration, and quasi-elastic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The values of pHpzc (point of zero charge) and pHIEP (isoelectric point) which characterize the electrical double layer depend strongly on the white clay addition to HAP. Comparative studies of hydroxyapatite, white clay and composite using nitrogen adsorption and FTIR methods showed that in most cases composite has the properties nearly intermediate between hydroxyapatite and white clay taken for the synthesis; however, certain non- additivity was observed analyzing the properties, due to precipitation of HAP onto clay particles that changes the HAP formation conditions in comparison to HAP formation alone. Thus, changes in the condition of the composite preparation allow one to control the properties of the final materials.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the influence of bee pollen on the physicochemical and in vitro properties of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel composites enriched with hydroxyapatite and modified with bee pollen as a prospective material for biomedical application with beneficial features including good osseointegration and anti-inflammatory effect. The phase and chemical composition of hydroxyapatite synthesized by wet-precipitation method was confirmed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). Proposed materials were investigated towards in vitro properties by immersion in the incubation fluids including artificial saliva, Ringer’s solution and distilled water. The composites swelling ability was determined. Additionally, the chemical structure of the polymer matrix composites was confirmed by FT-IR method. Moreover, to characterize composite degradation process during 21-day incubation the FT-IR technique was used. In order to describe bee pollen feature, both scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry were used. Presented research revealed that hydroxyapatite, as well as PAA undergo biodegradation during in vitro test. Moreover, matrices degradation results in incubation fluids pH decrease associated with anionic nature of PAA which is further enhanced by bee pollen release. The strongest pH drop effect was observed for Ringer’s solution. Increase in conductivity of distilled water confirmed composites degradation process.

Opis:
Hydroxyapatite (HAp)/chitosan (CS) composites were synthesized via a one-step co-precipitation method from aqueous solution, with the use of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4). CS was obtained via partial deacetylation of chitin with the use of strong sodium hydroxide solution. Composites were prepared with various HAp/CS ratios (30/70, 50/50, 70/30, 85/15) for comprehensive comparison of their properties. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis showed that hydrogen bonds were formed between the organic matrix and the mineral compound, confirming a successful phase interconnection. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained, enabling examination of the crystalline properties of the composites, including HAp identification. The porous structure parameters of the composites were investigated, and morphological analysis (SEM) was performed. Differential Thermal Gravimetry (DTG) analysis of the composites indicated that the material is thermally stable up to 200 oC. Additionally, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the mineral was carried out to check the Ca/P ratio, and confirmed its similarity to pure HAp.

Opis:
Besides high-temperature calcium phosphates (CaPs), low-temperature calcium phosphate bone cements (CPCs), due to excellent biological properties: bioactivity, biocompability and osteoconductivity, are successfully used as bone substitutes. However, some disadvantages, related mainly to their low resorption rate and poor mechanical properties result in limited range of applications of these implant materials to non-loaded places in the skeletal system. To overcome this problem, magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) with high strength have been considered as biomaterials. The main disadvantage of MPCs is that the acid-base setting reaction is an exothermic process that must be strictly controlled to avoid tissue necrosis. In this work, a new composite bone substitute (Hydroxyapatite Magnesium Phosphate Material – HMPM) based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) with sodium pyrophosphate applied as a retardant of setting reaction was obtained. Its setting time was adequate for clinical applications. Combining properties of HA and MPC has made it possible to obtain microporous (showing bimodal pore size distribution in the range of 0.005–1.700 micrometers) potential implant material showing good surgical handiness and sufficient mechanical strength. Effectiveness of sodium pyrophosphate as a retardant of exothermic setting reaction of the new cement formulation was confirmed. After setting and hardening, the material consisted of hydroxyapatite and struvite as crystalline phases. Unreacted magnesium oxide was not detected.

Opis:
In light of recent events in the replacement and generation of human tissues, it is becoming extremely difficult to ignore the existence of bioceramics. Although hydroxyapatite and betatricalcium phosphate materials are frequently employed individually, they both lack certain qualities. As a result, combining hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate may result in the combination of their respective qualities. The current study aims to investigate the effect of using a novel nanostructure called silicene (silicon nanosheet-SiNS) on the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic (biphasic calcium p hosphate) at various ratios of hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate. The silicene has been synthesized and added at different weight percentages of 1, 3, and 5%. The results reveal that the compressive strength improved due to increasing the content of silicene. The average of increasing was between 58.6% and 142% because of the strong hexagonal structure of silicene. At the same time, the hardness of the biphasic calcium phosphate composite was enhanced by increasing the weight percentage of silicene. However, the hardness decreased when the content of silicene was more than 3% due to the presence of small cavities on the surface of the samples.

Opis:
A biocompatible hydroxyapatite (HA) coating with a thickness of about 18–20 microns was successfully deposited by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering on titanium substrates VT1-0. The data obtained for the optimal composition and structure of hydroxyapatite can be used to create coating which will interact with a titanium substrate. Using the methods of optical and SEM, AFM, electron microprobe, FTIR and X-ray analysis, surface morphology, phase and elemental composition, structure of hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were studied. Structural and phase transformations after heat treatment using X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods of analysis were studied. It was found that after annealing coating phase analysis showed the presence of not only hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH), but also compounds of tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) and titanium oxide. Adhesivetribological durability, friction and deformation characteristics of hydroxyapatite coating on titanium substrate were determined. The obtained coatings had high hardness, wear resistance and adhesion to the substrate and low modulus of elasticity and coefficient of friction.
