Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present the possibilities of using hydrogen buses in urban transport taking into account technological, economic and environmental conditions. Design/methodology/approach: Analysis of international literature, Polish literature and reports related to the development of alternative energy sources in vehicles and urban transport development. Findings: The Polish government to achieve the environmental requirements of the European Union obliges local government units to ensure the share of zero-emission buses in the fleet of vehicles in use. On the basis of the conducted analysis we can say that a significant advantage of hydrogen vehicles is the total lack of emissions, a long range of up to 350-400 km and short charging times. However, a significant problem is insufficient infrastructure - not enough hydrogen stations. Despite this difficulty, more and more manufacturers are interested in producing hydrogen vehicles, and investors are seriously considering the costs and benefits of zero-emission buses. Unfortunately, none of the economic analyses that have been commissioned by Polish companies providing transport services have shown the viability of using hydrogen buses. Originality/value: The paper shows the global trends in the development of city buses with particular attention to hydrogen buses.

Opis:
Highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide solutions have been widely known and used as rocket mono-propellants and oxidisers in the aerospace industry. However, the use of hydrogen peroxide is becoming more and more important in other fields of modern industry – being applicable to novel formulations of base high explosives for use in mining as a kind of industrial “green explosive”. The authors, explain the facts and dispel some of the myths concerning both the medium and the potentially explosive mixtures based on it. The method of preparation and safe handling of 98%+ hydrogen peroxide is briefly presented and advocated by some of the experimental and literature examples. The paper contains both historical and modern approaches to concentrated hydrogen peroxide based mixtures that have been reported as undergoing detonation. The safety concerns, especially those related to their potential explosiveness during preparation, handling or utilisation are analysed as well. New potential applications of hydrogen peroxide based mixtures that can be used as industrial explosives with low NOx emission levels are presented. The potential of the medium as a “green” and easy to handle oxidising compound that may replace ammonium nitrate in a variety of emulsion and blended ANFO-emulsion commercial explosives that currently constitute the majority of explosives used in the mining industry, is underlined.

Opis:
The paper presents the main activities of the Institute of Aviation (IoA) in the field of chemical rocket propulsion. The relatively "fresh" research and development team performed many useful works within the last 5 years, starting from the strategy and ideas. Nowadays, the Space Technology Department of IoA acts as a member of international consortia realizing space projects, as well as itself working on its own assignments financed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and IoA funds. The important development aspect of rocket propulsion developed at IoA is the use of "green" propellants. These are chemicals, which are relatively safe for the environment and personnel, being a very promising alternative for storable toxic substances, e.g. hydrazine and derivatives, nitrogen tetroxide. R&D activities of STD are based on the use of Rocket Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (RGHP), also known as High Test Peroxide (HTP). This high-performance mono-propellant and oxidizer is regarded by European entities as one of the most promising candidates to replace hydrazine and its derivatives in the future. Due to numerous advantages, hydrogen peroxide is better suited for systems with human interaction that most of other propellant combinations. The paper contains selected results of research on green rocket propulsion performed at IoA, in which 98% hydrogen peroxide was used as oxidizer and monopropellant. Three types of rocket engines: monopropellant, liquid bipropellant and hybrid have been investigated and are still being developed.

Opis:
The paper presents both an experimental investigation and an up-to-date literature review over the hypergolicity of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide with various liquid mixtures or novel chemical compounds that may be a potential candidate for rocket applications. Moreover, the coverage contains both, a historical and modern approach to hydrogen peroxide based hypergolic propulsion systems. In addition, the advantages of the oxidizer, especially in the form of 98% solution of hydrogen peroxide, are profiled in detail against the toxic ones that are currently utilized. Equally, the potential replacements for hydrazine, monomethyl hydrazine, unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine, dinitrogen tetroxide or their combinations, as propellants in rocket applications, are collected and discussed thoroughly in terms of their propulsive performance, availability on the market, storability, handling and general safety conditions for the technical staff as well as environmental compatibility. The ignition mechanism of the two main fuel groups, catalytically and energetically promoted, that reveal fast, spontaneous ignition with the highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide , is described too. Furthermore, the example that results from the simple drop tests are shown with special focus laid on the comparison of the minimum ignition delay time as the key parameter for the discussed fuel compositions. Lastly, the most prospective fuel combinations are discussed as desirable alternatives for the near-future bipropellant propulsion systems for the rocket or satellite applications, or other that demand high energy density.
