Opis:
Fruit production should be adapted to future scenarios that are frequently associated with scarce resources, especially freshwater and fertilizers. New biologically-based fruit production strategies, i.e. taking into account tree growth and water status, are required to optimize irrigation and fertilization under abiotic stress conditions. It was hypothesized that a moderate abiotic stress, here deficit irrigation with or without nitrogen deficit, in the preharvest period, could decrease postharvest losses due to diseases and pruning weights due to reduced vegetative growth, without sacrificing the yield and fruit quality. This study was conducted over two years using the same trees of ‘Moncante’ nectarine cultivar grown in a commercial orchard. Trees were assigned to three treatments: (1) full irrigation at 80% estimated crop evapotranspiration (ETc), (2) deficit irrigation, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation, and (3) deficit irrigation and deficit nitrogen, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation and 75% of usual N-fertilization adopted by the grower in this commercial orchard. Deficit irrigation alone and in combination with deficit nitrogen reduced postharvest diseases and pruning weights without significant yield losses. Our results suggest that ETc-based approaches of reduced water irrigation may be a sustainable way to decrease phytosanitary inputs and workload in the orchard while maintaining the orchard performance.

Opis:
Head blight caused by Fusarium culmorum or F. graminearum affects all cereals including winter rye (Secale cereale L.). Besides yield and quality losses, grain is contaminated with the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) that is harmful to animals and humans. We analysed 76 self-fertile S2 lines and their corresponding testcrosses for head blight resistance and DON concentration in the grain by inoculating them with an aggressive isolate of F. culmorum at two locations in Southwestern Germany in 2000. Disease severity at both locations was low with mean ratings from 2.7 to 3.4 on a 1-9 scale (1=healthy), but still DON occurred in considerable amounts (11.4 - 15.0 mg kg-1). Genotypic variance was significant (P=0.01) in all instances, genotype-location interaction and error variances were more important for DON concentration resulting in a lower heritability of this trait. No association between S2 lines and their testcrosses was found for head blight rating or DON concentration (r = 0.33 and 0.19, respectively). The coefficient of correlation between head blight rating and DON concentration was low for the S2 lines and medium for the testcrosses (r=0.24 and 0.60, P=0.05 and P=0.01, resp.). The hybrid rye breeder should select predominantly on testcross performance. Selection for low head blight ratings should result in lower DON concentrations in the grain also. In later generations, DON should be analysed additionally to exploit the maximum selection gain possible.

Opis:
Population Based Algorithms (PBAs) are excellent search tools that allow searching space of parameters defined by problems under consideration. They are especially useful when it is difficult to define a differentiable evaluation criterion. This applies, for example, to problems that are a combination of continuous and discrete (combinatorial) problems. In such problems, it is often necessary to select a certain structure of the solution (e.g. a neural network or other systems with a structure usually selected by the trial and error method) and to determine the parameters of such structure. As PBAs have great application possibilities, the aim is to develop more and more effective search formulas used in them. An interesting approach is to use multiple populations and process them with separate PBAs (in a different way). In this paper, we propose a new multi-population-based algorithm with: (a) subpopulation evaluation and (b) replacement of the associated PBAs subpopulation formulas used for their processing. In the simulations, we used a set of typical CEC2013 benchmark functions. The obtained results confirm the validity of the proposed concept.

Opis:
Vaccinium ×intermedium Ruthe, the hybrid of V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea, by contrast with the parental species is very rare plant and has a discontinuous geographical range in north-western Europe. This paper describes the morphology of V. ×intermedium from Polish populations occurring in part of Pomeranian Lakeland in comparison with both parent species. The results presented here confirm the suggestions of earlier research that V. ×intermedium displays intermediate characteristics of leaf and floral morphology concordant with hybrid status. Also, is discussed the problem of the isolating mechanisms between parent species and hybrid's ecology.
