    The article focuses on the phenomenon of free will in Paul, taking as the starting point Rom. 8:16. At the beginning, a concise exegetical analysis of Rom 8:16 is presented, placed in the rhetorical context of Rom 8. Subsequently, a comparison is drawn between Paul’s and Epictetus’s views on divine and human agency. First, the Epictetus’s idea of freedom is presented with a special emphasis on the notion of proairesis, understood as the true self of a person, responsible for free moral choices and actions. Next, the similarities and differences between the Epictetus’s and Pauline vision of free will are discussed. What connects the apostle and the philosopher are convictions that free will can exist in a divinely determined world and that human volition requires continuous education and subordination to God’s will. The elements that clearly distinguish Paul from Epictetus are the natural image of deity to be imitated in the human pursuit of freedom, and a genuinely relational, corporeal and emotive character of free will in the apostle. The psycho-somatic nature of human personality and will in Paul invites a dialogue between the apostle and modern science but it has to be carried out cautiously, bearing in mind the different methodologies, the idea of transcendent deity and Christological foundation upon which the Pauline idea of freedom and free will is built.

    Aim. This article seeks to show that Rembrandt is the most profound, comprehensive and reliable interpreter – not an illustrator – of the Old Testament: "His ability… makes him one of the great visual interpreters of Scripture… a theologian not by academic degree but in his very nature” (Parker, 1994, p. 28). It is the purpose of this article to demonstrate the acute difference between Rembrandt’s depictions of Old Testament events and those by other artists who merely converted the overtly stated text in the Holy Bible into the visual medium. Methods. The case for claiming that Rembrandt interpreted rather than merely depicted the Old Testament will be made by analysing five of his works and the comparison to others portraying the same events. Rembrandt’s unique methods and techniques such as adding or omitting certain figures or details, using chiaroscuro extensively and deviating from expected iconography will be demonstrated as he unearths the core significance of each event.   Results. This article manifests how Rembrandt whose production of artwork relating to Old Testament scenes was prolific did not merely depict Old Testament scenes but rather interpreted the deeper, psychological meanings of the subjects involved and events portrayed, exhibiting a profound understanding of the messages in the original Hebrew text. Conclusion.  The article unfolds Rembrandt’s significant artistic accomplishments surpassing those who preceded or succeeded him. It reveals the different means he used in each painting expressing its high point according to Old Testament interpretation rather than through the prism of the New Testament.

    The main purpose of this article is to prove that one can become a personality only through culture. The authors propose to regard culture as a relatively autonomous spiritual sphere, which transcends the narrow requirements of the concrete society in its historical limitations. They argue that personality is the highest level of human development to emerge in culture, whereas the level of a biosocial organism is provided by society. The authors claim that only culture, be it religious or secular, contains an existential and spiritual imperative which demands each human being to realize one’s own potential humanity. They explain why in a postmodern world culture becomes an “existential choice” of each human being, depending on one’s free will: to inherit the culture, to become a human being of humanity or not. In the Free school of philosophy and culture seminars (Odesa, Ukraine), the authors propose to enter the field of culture through the mutual interpretation of a chosen masterpiece of world literature and to link its message with our lives.

    During the last few decades much has been said about spirituality as well as the human spiritual dimension. The present-day understanding of spirituality generally does not place it within a religious framework. Rather, it is understood as the search for answers to fundamental human questions. This understanding gives rise to several questions: Can we speak of a human spiritual dimension divorced from a religious view of man? What is essential for the spiritual dimension of every person whether religious or not? What role does the Holy Spirit play in Christian spirituality? The author attempts to answer these questions in three sections. First, he points to the human spiritual dimension alongside the experience of the inner or spiritual life of every person. Then, considering Christian tradition, he demonstrates the importance of understanding a person as a unified being. In the final section he attempts to show how a Christian can only unify himself inwardly and simultaneously orient himself outwardly in the Holy Spirit as love. In this way he can animate his spiritual dimension and realize a genuine and fruitful Christian spirituality.
    W ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci wiele zostało powiedziane na temat duchowości, jak również na temat ludzkiego wymiaru duchowego. Dzisiejsze rozumienie duchowości na ogół nie umieszcza jej w ramach religijnych. Jest raczej pojmowana jako poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na podstawowe ludzkie pytania. Takie rozumienie rodzi kilka pytań: Czy możemy mówić o ludzkim duchowym wymiarze w oddzieleniu od religijnego spojrzenia na człowieka? Co jest istotne dla duchowego wymiaru każdej osoby, czy to religijnej czy nie? Jaką rolę odgrywa Duch Święty w chrześcijańskiej duchowości? Autor próbuje odpowiedzieć na te pytania w trzech sekcjach. Po pierwsze, wskazuje na ludzki wymiar duchowy wraz z doświadczeniem wewnętrznym lub duchowym życiem każdej osoby. Następnie, rozważając tradycję chrześcijańską, demonstruje znaczenie zrozumienia osoby jako istoty zjednoczonej wewnętrznie. W ostatniej części stara się pokazać, jak chrześcijanin może tylko jednoczyć się wewnętrznie i jednocześnie orientować się na zewnątrz w Duchu Świętym jako miłość. W ten sposób może animować swój duchowy wymiar i realizować prawdziwą i owocną chrześcijańską duchowość.

    This article proposes the thesis that Edith Stein’s late anthropology has a theocentric orientation. The threefold structure of a human being consisting of a body, soul and spirit is examined in order to validate the thesis. First of all, the finitude of a human being points out to the eternal being and – consequently – human beings are not conceivable by themselves, without the context of God. Moreover, the hylomorphic union of the body and soul adopted from Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy is enriched in Stein’s anthropology by the concept of spirit. This results in a threefold structure and is reason enough to suggest man’s iconic similarity to the Trinity. Furthermore, Stein takes over St. Teresa of Avila’s concept of an internal center of the soul, which can be a meeting point between a person and God. The analysis of the soul’s center supports the main thesis.
