Opis:
Higher education institutions are an essential, endogenous element of economic development and take part in resolving global issues. Their utilitarian role, however, may be greatly limited as a result of improper ways of financing science and didactics. The prevailing mechanism of financing didactics in public universities in Polish reality does not ensure the effectiveness of deployed resources and only partially bases on competition, thus not generating the stimuli for positive changes. The algorithm on the basis of which the resources are allocated should be modified. It should be based on criteria reflecting changes in social and economic surroundings. It should also comprise mechanisms stimulating competition between universities and enhancing the quality of didactics and science.

Corporatizing university is among the typical strategic of higher education (HE) management that enables developed countries to successfully position their universities among the best ones in the world. In Indonesia, the varying quality of universities is influenced by several factors: limited funding, inadequate facilities, meager quality of lecturers and researchers, inefficient management, and ineffective use of public spending. Teese emerged as symptoms that point to a deep-seated obstacle faced by Indonesian universities, i.e., an inappropriate university management and financing model. This study attempted to reveal the essential problem underlying the symptoms and share some thoughts of how to resolve them. It is concluded that corporatizing university in the country is considered among the most effective strategies to establish world-class universities in the archipelago.

PRIVATE RESOURCES OF FINANCING HIGHER EDUCATION
Opis:
One of the main problems of contemporary higher education on a global scale is the deficit of sufficient financial resources. Universities are financed from both public and private sources. Presently in Poland reforms of this financing are being discussed and implemented. This generates both economic and social consequences. The newly edited ”Development strategy for the higher education system in Poland up to the year 2020” suggests many both evolutionary and revolutionary changes in financing higher education. The example is an idea of common tuition fees.

Opis:
In the face of global economic problems European (and not only European) universities are forced to diversify their income. The constant and stable stream of governmental funds for education is beginning to dry up.For the majority of Polish universities the main and noticeably dominant source of income are the revenues from teaching activity. Thus the current diversification of universities’ revenues appears to be just a fiction. The situation is even worse because of both the global economic crisis and the imminent decrease in the birth rate. Polish universities should follow funding models of foreign leaders, who successfully deal with diversification of their revenues. Obviously we cannot compare such universities as Harvard or Oxford with Polish universities, but some of their solutions are worth following. Only by diversifying sources of their revenues will Polish universities be able to compete with the foreign leaders and secure a stable basis for development and use of their potential.

Opis:
Aim. This paper examines how dominant understandings of students in third-level education in Ireland are reflected in national policies, filtered through the official and aspirational texts issued by Irish colleges, and negotiated and contested by students. Specifically, we investigate the discrepancies between the perceived needs of students in third-level education as imagined in government policies and promoted by higher education institutions, and the lived realities of students who grapple with multiple challenges brought about by structural failures in housing and higher education funding policy. Methods. Through documentary analysis and primary qualitative data on student experiences, we examine how the imagined figure of the third-level student/graduate becomes imbued with the aspirations of multiple stakeholders: policymakers, academic institutions, and potential employers - in ways that conflict with the lived realities of students. Results. We find that students are caught between the ambitions and expectations of an education system that pushes them into higher education without the requisite and adequate supports. Conclusion. The ideal graduate is expected to embody the nation’s hope for future success as well as to uphold the alma mater’s reputation among employers. Couched in this rhetoric of the graduate as the beacon of hope, however, are deeper failings of a welfare state that is still battling the aftermath of recession. These failures are projected onto students, manifesting in a very real way in their minds and lives as they struggle to balance between institutional, family and personal expectations, the demands of daily life and future plans.

Globalization of vital processes of mankind today is associated with an increase in the importance of education in matters of self-development of people. According to UNESCO definition, education is the process and outcome of improvement of skills and behaviour of the individual, due to which he or she reaches social maturity and personal growth. The current state of society requires the identification of new approaches to terminology in the management of educational sphere, which is the basis for belief, spiritual development of the individual, and also ensures the development of the intellectual potential of society. The rapid changes that have occurred in the last decade in the life of our country due to the socio-economic and political factors affected all aspects of social life, including the education system. Relevance of study processes occurring in education, is increasing as socium recognized that the transition to an information society where knowledge serves as the main social value leads to the increasing role of highly intelligent individual, able not only to accept previously accumulated scientific knowledge, but also to generalize, analyse, create a new form of advanced information technologies, services and products. That is why in recent years the reform processes are taking place in education and they aim at achieving the best world standards. Therefore, this article investigates the development and establishment of definitions of management of higher education.

Opis:
Higher education institutions in the United States have historically been tasked with the responsibility of scaffolding the moral development of students. Although empirical evidence suggests that attending colleges and universities can foster students’ moral development and reasoning, the effect of online higher education remains mainly unknown. The current study has examined the effect of two online psychology courses, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods Lab, and their respective assignments on students’ moral competence. The findings revealed that students’ moral competence in both courses was improved; this improvement was partly attributed to online group discussions in the Developmental psychology course. No other assignments were found to be significant contributors of students’ moral competence. Limitations and implications of the findings were discussed.

The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of instructors of internationalization in higher education. The sample of this study consists of 325 faculty members working at four different universities. The data were collected using a scale developed by the researchers. According to findings scale points of the female instructors are better than the male instructors in the foreign language and academic sub-scales. It is seen that perception level of the instructors who were stayed in a foreign country for their education are better than the ones who were not in the academic sub-scale. It is also observed that perceptions of instructors who went to a congress or symposium abroad are better than the ones who did not go to a congress and symposium abroad in the foreign language dimension.

Using data from a Master's of Public Administration (MPA) program at a Mid-western regional university in the United States, this paper studies whether Learning Management Systems (LMS) have equivalent outputs relative to more traditional educational delivery systems. In essence, are current generation LMS, used for online only instruction, equivalent to traditional teaching models when examining race and gender? This study examined certain output criteria using regression analysis and found no statistically significant difference between online and on-ground students in terms of their MPA degree GPA. However, African American student performance was relatively weaker than non-African American students in terms of GPA regardless of whether they were admitted into the online or on-ground program. This finding is consistent with other studies examining on-ground only performance. We posit that this difference was caused by their lower grades before they entered into this master's program. To combat the gap, fair grading is a good but not sufficient practice, and additional resources and remedial approaches should be in place in order to better prepare African American students as competitive as other racial groups.

The general problems of the Hungarian education system surface in the higher education sphere as well. Instructors frequently note the knowledge, skill, and competence-related deficien-cies of newly enrolled students. Additional difficulties are posed by the lack of motivation or the low level of interest toward learning. Furthermore, the prevalence of traditional educational meth-ods, the lectures designed for a large student audience and similarly structured seminars tend to exacerbate the problem. Students do not prepare for classes or strive to increase their knowledge via independent work and active in-class participation. Consequently new methods are needed for increasing the efficiency of the educational process, along with the enhancement of internal moti-vation and the promotion of subject-related interest.

The main goal of the paper is to discuss whether a contest, as an educational tool, can develop the creativity of participants when the main goal of the students may be to win. A 24HOURS contest was implemented as a case study. Three methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the 24HOURS contest: a written questionnaire, individual in-depth interviews, and an online questionnaire. Results proved that the contest was unsatisfactory in increasing students’ creativity, as they were oriented to win, or to acquire knowledge, rather than to cooperate or interact with representatives of other student teams. The investigation confirmed the tutors’ enabling responsibility for both cooperation and creativity during the contest. However, expectations of tutor engagement caused concern and their role should, therefore, have been more clearly defined. Analysis of the case study presented in this paper can provide pedagogues with insight into the design and implementation of contests as educational tools.

Opis:
Aim: The aim of this paper was to verify the impact of gender on correlations between native language competences and academic activity of master grade students of social sciences in Poland. Results are disscussed with other international findings. Methods: Gathering of the data was used via auditorial survey. Data was collected from 235 students (163 female, 73 male) from one of polish national universities on faculty of social sciences. Data has been analysed using T-Students test and Linear Regression models. Results: T-Students test results indicated that female students had significantly higher education outcomes and study results scores than male students. Regression analysis revealed that gender as a moderating factor of linguistic capital was a significant predictor in regard to students education outcomes and study results. The main part of linguistic capital significantly moderated by gender were language experiences, regarded toward study results scores. Conclusions: Female students have equall linguistic capital and language experiencess as male students, althoug they are more capable in using that capitale for their benefit in the context of academic education. Implication of the study and future recommendation are advised.
