To investigate the effect of reactor performance/configuration of biodiesel production on process parameters (mass & energy consumption, required facilities etc.), two diverse production processes (from vegetable oil) were implemented/designed using Aspen HYSYS V7.2. Two series reactors were taken into account where overall conversion was set to be 97.7% and 70% in first and second processes respectively. Comparative analysis showed that an increase in conversion yield caused to consumption reduction of oil, methanol, cold energy and hot energy up to 9.1%, 22%, 67.16% and 60.28% respectively; further, a number of facilities (e.g. boiler, heat exchanger, distillation tower) were reduced. To reduce mass & energy consumption, mass/heat integration method was employed. Applying integration method showed that in the first design, methanol, cold and hot energy were decreased by 49.81%, 17.46% and 36.17% respectively; while in the second design, oil, methanol, cold and hot energy were decreased by 9%, 60.57% 19.62% and 36.58% respectively.

A tendency to increase the importance of so-called dispersed generation, based on the local energy sources and the working systems utilizing both the fossil fuels and the renewable energy resources is observed nowadays. Generation of electricity on industrial or domestic scale together with production of heat can be obtained for example through employment of the ORC systems. It is mentioned in the EU directive 2012/27/EU for cogenerative production of heat and electricity. For such systems the crucial points are connected with the heat exchangers, which should be small in size but be able to transfer high heat fluxes. In presented paper the prototype microjet heat exchanger dedicated for heat recovery systems is introduced. Its novel construction is described together with the systematical experimental analysis of heat transfer and flow characteristics. Reported results showed high values of the overall heat transfer coefficient and slight increase in the pressure drop. The results of microjet heat exchanger were compared with the results of commercially available compact plate heat exchanger.

Paper presents the results of evaluation of heat resistance and specific heat capacity of MAR-M-200, MAR-M-247 and Rene 80 nickel superalloys. Heat resistance was evaluated using cyclic method. Every cycle included heating in 1100°C for 23 hours and cooling for 1hour in air. Microstructure of the scale was observed using electron microscope. Specific heat capacity was measured using DSC calorimeter. It was found that under conditions of cyclically changing temperature alloy MAR-M-247 exhibits highest heat resistance. Formed oxide scale is heterophasic mixture of alloying elements, under which an internal oxidation zone was present. MAR-M-200 alloy has higher specific heat capacity compared to MAR-M-247. For tested alloys in the temperature range from 550°C to 800°C precipitation processes (γ′, γ′′) are probably occurring, resulting in a sudden increase in the observed heat capacity.

The work presents experiment results from the area of copper casting technology and chosen examples of alloyed copper. At present, copper casting technology is applied in many branches of industrial manufacturing, especially in the sector of construction, communications, arms and power engineering. Alloyed copper, containing slight additions of different elements and having special physio-chemical properties, is used in a special range of applications. Copper technology and alloyed copper analyses have been presented, these materials being used for cast manufacturing for power engineering. The quality of casts has been assessed, based on their microstructure analysis, chemical content and the cast properties. During the research, special deoxidizing and modifying agents were applied for copper and chosen examples of alloyed copper; also exemplary samples were tested with the help of metallographic analysis, electrical conductivity and gaseous impurities research.

This work aimed at studying the effects of temperature and air flow rate on heat transfer coefficient during the forced air drying of onion slices. The weight losses in 5 mm thick onion slices were determined during the drying at 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65°C and 0.7, 0.9 and 1.1 m/s air flow rates. Each experiment lasted 2 h. The heat transfer coefficient was calculated based on the empirical results and a mathematical model for the constant drying rate period of the forced air drying of solid materials. No functional relationship was found between the air temperature and heat transfer coefficient for onion slices under the forced convection drying conditions. The heat transfer coefficient ranged from 16.3 to 21.0 W/(m2.K), and it increased with the air flow rate.
Celem pracy było zbadanie wpływu temperatury oraz prędkości przepływu powietrza na wartość współczynnika wnikania ciepła do plasterków cebuli suszonych w warunkach konwekcji wymuszonej. Wykonano serię pomiarów ubytków masy plasterków cebuli o grubości 5 mm suszonych w temperaturach 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 i 65°C przy prędkościach przepływu powietrza 0.7, 0.9 i 1.1 m/s. Czas trwania każdego eksperymentu wynosił 2 h. Współczynnik wnikania ciepła do plasterków cebuli obliczono na podstawie wyników pomiarów w oparciu o matematyczny model okresu stałej szybkości konwekcyjnego suszenia ciał stałych. Przebiegi zmian szybkości suszenia (K) oraz współczynnika wnikania ciepła (hT) w zależności od temperatury oraz prędkości przepływu powietrza przedstawione są na rysunkach 1 i 2. Nie stwierdzono istnienia zależności funkcyjnej między temperaturą powietrza a współczynnikiem wnikania ciepła do plasterków cebuli suszonych w warunkach konwekcji wymuszonej. Współczynnik wnikania ciepła do plasterków cebuli przyjmował wartości z zakresu od 16,3 do 21,0 W/(m2K) i rósł wraz ze wzrostem prędkości przepływu powietrza.

Opis:
One of the main features of energy production in Poland is high dependence on consumption of coal and lignite, which results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. This article presents the geo- information technology and spatial analysis of GHG emissions from fossil fuel burned by power and combined power and heat plants. These plants are considered as emission sources of a point type. As input data, official regional statistics about consumption of fossil fuel for electricity and heat production are used. In addition, main characteristics of power and power/ heat plants are collected from official web-sites. Based on the developed model, numerical experiments have been carried out for the territory of Poland. The results of spatial modeling are presented in the form of thematic maps.

In earlier works were described trends in the production of tools for die casting (hot work). Almost the entire set of issues dealt with may seem insignificant when incompletely assembled acceptance of the material and the associated risks of processing a material with an inappropriate structure, leading to a very early defect of the die. Therefore, further work will focus particularly on identifying the causes of thermal cracks and preventing a suitable choice of acceptance criteria conditions and heat treatment.

The paper presents a prototype semi-industrial cooling line developed by the authors, which makes it possible to design a thermal treatment of forgings with the use of the forging heat, together with exemplary test results for forgings forked type. The proposed method of heat treatment dedicated to these forgings was described and compared to traditionally used heat treatment method in chamber furnaces. Next, the original research stand was presented, which performs mechanical fatigue test on final products – forked-type forgings. Forgings after heat treatment and cooling on the prototype line were tested on this stand in condition of cyclically variable mechanical loads in order to resistance to mechanical fatigue was analyzed and the influence of performed exemplary heat treatment on mechanical properties. The presented preliminary investigations performed on the designed combined research standing, consisting of: the prototype controlled cooling line, as well as mechanical fatigue stand point to the possibility of implementing thermal treatment with the use of the heat generated during the forging process and determining its impact on the mechanical properties of forgings.

The study presents sketches and photos of the cast creep-resistant components used in various types of heat treatment furnaces. The shape of the elements results from the type of the operation carried out in the furnace, while dimensions are adjusted to the size of the furnace working chamber. The castings are mainly made from the high-alloyed, austenitic chromium-nickel or nickel-chromium steel, selecting the grade in accordance with the furnace operating conditions described by the rated temperature, the type and parameters of the applied operating atmosphere, and the charge weight. Typical examples in this family of construction elements are: crucibles, roller tracks, radiant tubes and guides. The majority of castings are produced in sand moulds.

Opis:
Design of supersonic HI rocket by the Rocketry Group of Students' Space Association (SR SKA) requires an analysis of thermal phenomena occurring in the elements particularly exposed to the high temperature gas. This paper contains a description of the methodology and the results of numerical simulation of heat transfer in the elements of the rocket head. The starting points were the flight conditions (3 characteristic points defined by altitude and Mach number) and independently calculated adiabatic temperature field of the gas. ANSYS Fluent code was used to determine the temperature field on the surface of the rocket. Computed cases were viscous and inviscid flow (for comparison). Based on the results formulated for the viscous case heat transfer boundary conditions, the numerical model and the thermophysical properties of materials were defined. The model was limited to a brass top part of the head and a part of a composite dome. Analytical and empirical method of "intermediate enthalpy" determined distribution of the heat transfer coefficient on the rocket surface. Then the transient heat transfer was calculated with the ANSYS system. It included the range from the rocket launch, moment of maximum Mach number to sufficient structure cooling. The results of the analyses were conclusions relevant to the further development work. Excessive heating of composite structures during the flight has been shown.
Niniejszy artykuł zawiera opis metody oraz wyniki numerycznej symulacji wymiany ciepła w elementach głowicy rakiety. Punkt wyjścia stanowiły założone warunki lotu (3 punkty charakterystyczne określone przez wysokość i liczbę Macha) i wyznaczone niezależnie adiabatyczne pole temperatury gazu. Do wyznaczenia pola temperatur na powierzchni rakiety użyty został system ANSYS Fluent. Zostały' obliczone przypadki przepływał lepkiego i nielepkiego (dla porównania). Na podstawie wyników* dla przypadku lepkiego sformułowano warunki brzegowe wymiany ciepła, założenia modelu numerycznego. Model ograniczono do mosiężnej części noskowej i fragmentu kompozytowej kopułki. Metodą analityczno-empiryczną „średniej entalpii" (intermediate enthalpy) wyznaczono rozkład współczynnika przejmowania ciepła na powierzchni rakiety. Następnie dokonano obliczenia nieustalonej wymiany ciepła z wykorzystaniem systemu ANSYS. Obejmowały one zakres od startu rakiety, poprzez moment osiągnięcia maksymalnej liczby Macha, do wystarczającego schłodzenia konstrukcji. Efektem pracy było sformułowanie wniosków istotnych z punktu widzenia dalszych prac konstrukcyjnych, wykazano nadmierne ogrzewanie elementów kompozytowych w trakcie lotu.

Depending on the course of the processes of heat treatment and thermo-chemical treatment, the technological equipment of heat treatment furnaces is exposed to different operating conditions, as the said processes differ among themselves in the temperature of annealing and atmosphere prevailing in the furnace chamber, in the duration of a single work cycle and in the type and temperature of the coolant. These differences affect the magnitude of stresses occurring in each cycle of the operation of furnace accessories, and thus play an important role in fatigue processes leading to the destruction of these accessories. The kinetics of temperature changes during each cooling process plays an important role in the formation of thermal stresses on the cross-section of the cooled parts. It depends on many factors, including the initial cooling temperature, the type and temperature of the cooling medium, or the dimensions and shape of the object. This article presents a numerical analysis of the effect of the initial temperature on the distribution of stresses on the cross-section of the grate ribs, generated in the first few seconds of the cooling process carried out in two cooling media, i.e. hardening oil and water. The analysis was carried out by the finite element method, based on the results of experimental testes of temperature changes in the rib during its cooling.

The study is devoted to an analysis of thermal stresses arising in the basic elements of pallets used in furnaces for the carburising treatment. The construction of a pallet was presented and an example of its operating cycle was described. Using finite element method, a simulation analysis of the kinetics of cooling and heating of selected pallet components was performed. The results obtained were verified experimentally and used as a basis for the analysis of thermal stresses generated in these components during their cooling.

The results of research on the effect of the type of cooling agent used during heat treatment and thermal-chemical treatment on the formation of temperature gradient and stress-deformation distribution in cast pallets, which are part of furnace accessories used in this treatment, are disclosed. During operation, pallets are exposed to the effect of the same conditions as the charge they are carrying. Cyclic thermal loads are the main cause of excessive deformations or cracks, which after some time of the cast pallet operation result in its withdrawal due to damage. One of the major causes of this damage are stresses formed under the effect of temperature gradient in the unevenly cooled pallet construction. Studies focused on the analysis of heat flow in a charge-loaded pallet, cooled by various cooling agents characterized by different heat transfer coefficients and temperature. Based on the obtained temperature distribution, the stress distribution and the resulting deformation were examined. The results enabled drawing relevant conclusions about the effect of cooling conditions on stresses formed in the direction of the largest temperature gradient.

The lifetime of guide grates in pusher furnaces for heat treatment could be increased by raising the flexibility of their structure through, for example, the replacement of straight ribs, parallel to the direction of grate movement, with more flexible segments. The deformability of grates with flexible segments arranged in two orientations, i.e. crosswise (perpendicular to the direction of compression) and lengthwise (parallel to the direction of compression), was examined. The compression process was simulated using SolidWorks Simulation program. Relevant regression equations were also derived describing the dependence of force inducing the grate deformation by 0.25 mm ‒ modulus of grate elasticity ‒ on the number of flexible segments in established orientations. These calculations were made in Statistica and Scilab programs. It has been demonstrated that, with the same number of segments, the crosswise orientation of flexible segments increases the grate structure flexibility in a more efficient way than the lengthwise orientation. It has also been proved that a crucial effect on the grate flexibility has only the quantity and orientation of segments (crosswise / lengthwise), while the exact position of segments changes the grate flexibility by less than 1%.

By the very nature of their work, castings used in furnaces for heat treatment and thermo-chemical treatment are exposed to the effect of many unfavorable factors causing their deformation and cracking, significantly shortening the lifetime. The main source of damage are the micro-and macro-thermal stresses appearing in each cycle. As the cost of furnace instrumentation forms a significant part of the total furnace cost, in designing this type of tooling it is important to develop solutions that delay the damage formation process and thus extend the casting operation time. In this article, two structural modifications introduced to pallets castings to reduce thermal stresses arising at various stages of the cooling process are proposed. The essence of the first modification consists in making technological recesses in the wall connections, while the aim of the second one is to reduce the stiffness of the pallet by placing expanders in the external walls. Using the results of simulation analyses carried out by the finite element method, the impact of both proposed solutions on the level of thermal stresses was evaluated.
