Opis:
Ultra-marathon running has enjoyed increasing popularity, with the number of master ultra-marathon runners growing annually. This study presents a case of a 51-year-old highly experienced long-distance runner (body mass: 65.1 kg, body height: 168 cm), who took part in a 48-h ultra-marathon race held in 2010, but dropped out of the competition due to acute cardiac problems manifested after 16 h of running and having completed a distance of 129 km. Two weeks following the race, intense cardiac examination was performed to explain the drop-out due to chest pain. A 12‑lead electrocardiogram, a 2D transthoracic echocardiography in 3 apical projections of the left ventricle, a computed tomography of the chest, an invasive coronary angiography and a maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test were performed. The 12-lead ECG revealed a negative T wave in III and aVF without morphological abnormalities. The echocardiographic examinations presented a normal size and function of the heart chambers, and a normal valvar structure and function (only trivial mitral and tricuspid regurgitation was observed). The invasive coronary arteriography – due to an increased calcium score in the CT scan – showed only a non-significant systolic dynamic narrowing in the eighth segment of the left anterior descending artery due to a muscle bridge. The physical performance characteristics of the athlete and a follow-up history of his athletic activity showed that the cardiac problems he had experienced during the ultra-marathon race did not prevent him from being active in sport.

Opis:
The aim of this prospective cohort study was to identify modifiable protective factors of the progression of acute/subacute low back pain (LBP) to the persistent state at an early stage to reduce the socioeconomic burden of persistent LBP. Patients attending a health practitioner for acute/subacute LBP were assessed at baseline addressing occupational, personal and psychosocial factors, and followed up over 12 weeks. Pearson correlations were calculated between these baseline factors and the presence of nonpersistent LBP at 12-week follow-up. For those factors found to be significant, multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. The final 3-predictor model included job satisfaction, mental health and social support. The accuracy of the model was 72%, with 81% of nonpersistent and 60% of persistent LBP patients correctly identified. Further research is necessary to confirm the role of different types of social support regarding their prognostic influence on the development of persistent LBP.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This study attempts to examine the correlates of environmental hygiene and the influence of environmental hygiene on child health outcomes in Cameroon while controlling for other variables. Design/methodology/approach – The study made the use of Heckman/Control function Model through the 2011 Demographic and Health Survey with a sample size of 11.732 households. Findings – Result shows that environmental hygienic strongly corroborates with child health outcomes, meaning that improve latrines is associated with increase in child health in Cameroon. Result of determinants shows that education, father’s age, father present in the house and urban residence are strongly correlating with environmental hygiene. Research implications/limitations – Highlights the need for decision-makers to be more intentional with allocating economic resources towards sanitation projects. Originality/value/contribution – Empirically, this study attempted to quantify the link between environmental hygiene and child health outcomes using the Cameroon DHS while solving for endogeneity, heterogeneity, simultaneity, and selectivity bias.
