Opis:
Introduction: Hallux valgus is a frequent painful deformity of the feet, and occurs most often in women of different ages. People with hallux valgus have, among others, a genetic predisposition, a weaker ligament-and joint structure of the foot, pes planus (flatfoot), rheumatoid arthritis, muscular balance disorders, are obese, and wear improper footwear. Purpose: To assess the knowledge of beauty salon clients on the subject of professional care of hallux valgus. Materials and methods: Research was conducted in a beauty salon in Lomza, Poland using an original questionnaire. The study was approved (No. 4/2013) by the senate of the Ethics Committee of the Lomza State University of Applied Sciences. Results: The conducted research showed that 48% of the surveyed women dealt with hallux valgus using orthopedic insoles, and 26% underwent procedures recommended by a specialist. Respondents knew kinesiotherapy and taping as treatment methods for this ailment. The vast majority of the surveyed women would undergo non-surgical hallux valgus treatment, and only a few would opt for surgery. Conclusions: The knowledge of the studied women about hallux valgus was quite extensive.

Opis:
Hallux valgus is one of the most common deformities within forefoot region. Reasons for this deformity are not entirely clear. The available literature lists both internal and external factors. Researchers dealing with hallux valgus emphasize that this deformation is accompanied by pain, reduced quality of life, changed foot statics, cosmetic problems and problems with buying the right footwear. The occurrence of pain may significantly affect the quality of everyday functioning and the broadly understood quality of life. The purpose of the following publication is to review selected interactions in the area of physiotherapy and orthopedic measures in the therapy of people reporting pain within the hallux valgus region.
Celem poniższej publikacji jest przegląd wybranych oddziaływań z zakresu fizjoterapii i zaopatrzenia ortopedycznego w terapii osób zgłaszających dolegliwości bólowe w obrębie palucha koślawego.

Opis:
Background. The study was done to evaluate short term clinico-radiological results of distal chevron osteotomy without lateral soft tissue release in mild to moderate hallux valgus. Materials and methods. This was a prospective study consisting of a total of 35 cases with mild to moderate hallux valgus deformity. All these patients were treated by distal chevron osteotomy without lateral soft tissue release. Results. In our study, the average value of hallux angle preoperatively was 32° (range, 24°-40°) and at final follow-up it was 14° (range, 8°-31°). The average reduction was 18°. The average intermetatarsal angle showed mean reduction of 5.3° at the final follow-up. Average range of motion of the first metatarsophalyngeal joint preoperatively and at final follow-up showed a small reduction of 5 degrees. The average preoperative AOFAS score was 49, which improved by 35 points to 84 at the final follow-up. 11.42% of the patients in the study group had a recurrence. Conclusions. 1. Based on our experience with distal chevron osteotomy without lateral soft tissue release, we found the procedure easy to perform with good procedural outcomes. 2. The possible complications of lateral soft tissue release are avoided.

Opis:
Purpose: Etiology of hallux valgus (HV) remains unclear and effective treatments and prophylaxis for this condition are lacking and conclusions of researches concerning HV are inconsistent. Recognition of the function-structure interrelation in foot at the early stage of valgus alignment of first metatarsophalangeus joint (1stMTPJ) would help explain the etiology of HV. Methods: The frequency of weight-shifting patterns during walking and the body mass index (BMI) were assessed relative to goniometric measurements of the 1stMTPJ angle in adolescents. Weight-shifting patterns were identified with a plantar pressure analysis, performed with the GaitlineMaxline Distance method. Results: As the 1stMTPJ angle widened, the frequency distributions of identified weight-shifting patterns became increasingly lopsided, due to the favoring or disfavoring of one pattern at the expense of the other. The two sexes showed opposite trends in the weight-shifting patterns that were favored/disfavored, relative to participants with a 0º 1stMTPJ angle. The clear predominance of a central-shift pattern, at the expense of a medial-shift, occurred with the largest (20º) 1stMTPJ angle among girls. Additionally, the BMI distributions associated with 1stMTPJ angle characteristics showed opposite trends between the sexes. Conclusions: Valgus alignment of 1stMTPJ among adolescents were associated with limitations in weight-shifting freedom of the foot during walking, that could be involved in maintaining balance. An 1stMTPJ angle of 20º, where distinct limitations were observed, might serve as a criterion of HV pathology.
