Opis:
Couch grass (Agropyron repens L.) was the dominantspecies in 5 investigated communities with stability class5, while its share in the community Agropyron repens + Festucarubra was as high as 42.2%. Communities with the dominanceof Agropyron repens + Deschampsia caespitosa and Agropyronrepens + Avenula pubescens represent the greatest variety of theirconstituent species, a total of 43 vascular plant species from15 botanical families having been recorded and 7 accompanyingspeciens. Due to the advantageous floristic composition and thefodder value score FVS of 6 or even higher, most analyzed communitiesare of considerable fodder value, although the value ofthe sward is reduced by taxa of low nutritive value and of lowyielding potential. Semi-heliophilous plant species are dominantin that community, occupying partially dry, fresh and even moisthabitats indicating acid soils with a high content of nitrogen compounds(N = 6.6). In Polish literature there is no synthetic study ofa community with the dominance of true wheat grass Agropyronrepens (L.) P.Beauv. that would focus on floristic composition, yield as well as natural and production value.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to assess the structure of biodiversity of field protective forest shelter belts to determine the directions of increasing their reclamation and conservation potential in the organic agricultural landscape. Methods of comparative ecology (synecological approach, assessment of α-diversity), forestry, geobotany, ornithology and statistical analysis are used. Changes in species diversity of plants and birds in forest shelter belts around organic fields are characterized. It is established that plantations with developed undergrowth and understorey are transformed due to the loss of up to 43.5% of trees, liquefaction of the edificatory tier. Transformer species with a wide phytocenotic range predominate in the tree stands. The grass tier is dominated by ruderants (36.5%) and adventive species (24.5%). The share (60%) of species with a mixed life strategy indicates changes in moisture conditions and soil trophism. A 2.4% of shade-loving plants and the presence of 14.7% nitrophils indicate an imbalance in the structure of forest shelter belts. Depletion of species composition, ecological and trophic structure of bird groups testify to the decrease in the capacity of forest shelter belts and their statio diversity, reduction of protective, environment-creating functions and other ecosystem services. In the three-tiered dense forest shelter belts with developed undergrowth and understorey, 10–27 species of birds nest. In general, avifauna is represented by 2 ecological groups (93.1% dendrophiles, 6.9% sclerophiles), divided into 5 types of nesting strategy (with a predominance of hollow-nests 37.0–53.3%), and 5 types of feeding (with a predominance of entomophagous 70.4–90.0%). Twenty-nine species have been identified on nesting, 27 of which are subject to protection at the level of international agreements. There are no adventive species, the index of synanthropization of avifauna is high – 0.85–1.0. For organic technologies to increase the potential of biological protection of fields from entomological pests by attracting insectivorous birds is relevant.

Opis:
Grasses have a considerable potential for the adaptation to various, often extreme, habitat conditions. The aim of the work was to present the vegetation diversity of the coal-mine spoil heaps with the dominant share of grasses and to identify the main factors responsible for this diversity in the aspect of post-industrial land reclamation. The communities differ in reference to the species preferences to light, moisture, soil fertility and reaction, which is reflected in the wide variety of microhabitats in the area. It was shown that the increase in the abundance of certain grass species, including Calamagrostis epigejos, Festuca rubra, Festuca arundinacea, Phragmites australis, has a significant negative impact on the species richness, species diversity and the uniformity of distribution of species of the plant community. Preliminary analyses revealed that on post-mining waste, the biomass production of the dominant species is negatively correlated with biodiversity. The knowledge about the biology and ecology of grass species, as well as on the assembly rules may be used in the reclamation of degraded areas. Gaining the knowledge about the vegetation diversity of the coal-mine spoil heaps with the dominant share of grasses can be useful in planning the reclamation works, taking into account natural processes, which leads to the creation of a permanent vegetation cover at a given site, protecting it against water or wind erosion. In the future these areas may provide a number of important ecosystem services.

Opis:
In multi-species grassland communities, plant growth and development are modified by both a number of habitat-related factors and physico-chemical processes resulting from the neighbourhood of other species. Plant interactions mediated through chemical substances are identified within the allelopathic processes. The allelopathic process involves excretion of bioactive compounds from plant or microorganisms that inhibit or stimulate physiological processes of the neighbour plants. The allelopathic compounds can exert a harmful impact on the emergence of seedlings, initial development and installation. Therefore, it is essential to reduce the allelopathic influence of the old sward on the plants sown as well to limit the interaction between these new plants. It is claimed that, among others, fertilizer components may partially reduce effects of allelopathic influences In this study we show the differences in growth inhibition of Ph. pratense seedlings caused by the water extracts of leaves of selected grass species and the amelioration of growth inhibition by addition of magnesium sulfate. The bioassays were performed on Petri dishes under the laboratory conditions. The activity of allelopathic substances in the leaf extracts was evaluated by the degree of inhibition of seed germination, seedling height and root length compared to the control objects (supplied with distilled water). The amelioration of the negative allelopathic effects by a complete nutrient component with or without the addition of magnesium sulfate was also evaluated against the appropriate controls and compared to the objects where blotting-paper was moistened only with leaf extracts. The present studies confirmed the defensive activity of magnesium sulfate against the allelopathic compounds of the tested grass species affecting the initial growth and development of Phleum pratense. The obtained results indicate potential elimination of the allelopathic negative influence of plants through suitable fertilization.
Substancje allelopatyczne mogą ujemnie wpływać na wschody, początkowy rozwój i instalację siewek (EMETERIO i in. 2003).

Over the last couple of years the Antarctic Peninsula region has been one of the fastest warming regions on the Earth. Rapidly proceeding deglaciation uncovers new areas for colonisation and formation of Antarctic tundra communities. The most evident dynamics, i.e. changes in both biodiversity and structure of tundra communities, are observed in the forefields of retreating glaciers. This paper presents examples of changes in biodiversity and in the direction and rate of succession changes taking place due to climate warming compounded by synanthropization in the maritime Antarctic.

Opis:
Communities of hay meadows with Arrhenatherum elatius form phytocenoses of at least two plant communities: Arrhenatheretum elatioris – semi-natural habitats, and Tanaceto-Arrhenatheretum elatioris – ruderal habitats. The communities of tall oat-grass include approximately 150 species of vascular plants. In central Poland Tanaceto-Arrhenatheretum is the main habitat for many species characteristic of the Arrhenatherion alliance, including: Pastinaca sativa, Knautia arvensis, Tragopogon pratensis. Hay meadows are vulnerable (VU) components of vegetation of the characterized region. There is a need to verify syntaxonomic units within the Arrhenatherion alliance and phytosociological identifiers of Natura 2000 habitats – extensively used hay lowland meadows (6510).

Opis:
This paper presents results of abundance field research, distribution and habitat and phytocoenotic preferences of Trisetum sibiricum on the Gutowo Meadows (Urszulewo Plain, NE Poland), in a locality outside the continuous range of distribution. The species grown in wet, not used meadows, in places overflooded by beavers, partially afforested. The research was carried out in 2013 and the results were compared with analogical data from 2000–2002. Currently a higher abundance of species (circa 1600 tufts), a larger area of the locality (circa 2.5 ha), larger phytosociological spectrum and a larger share of hygrophilous species in species composition of the examined phytocoenoses was revealed. In 2013 a share of Trisetum sibiricum was noted in 12 plant communities from seven classes (Phragmitetea australis, Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Bidentetea tripartiti, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Artemisietea vulgaris, Alnetea glutinosae and Querco-Fagetea), and in 2000–2002 – only in seven plant communities from three classes (Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Artemisietea vulgaris). Formerly the species was listed mainly in phytocoenoses of Angelico-Cirsietum oleracei and currently most often in phytocoenoses of Junco-Molinietum.
