Opis:
Optical methods now dominate the grain-size analysis of fine-grained sediments, because of their rapidity. The growing application of optical methods leads to statistical comparison of their results against those from sedimentation methods. Here, the Kołmogorow-Smirnow non-parametric test is demonstrated. Most agreement exists in the 50-20 and 20-6 mm fraction. In order to compare the optical and the combined methods, correlation ratios were calculated for all commonly used grain-size fractions. Regression equations were established for the 50-20 mm fraction.

Opis:
The results of investigations of the influence of operation parameters of the prototype vibratory REGMAS reclaimer on matrix grains refinement (destruction) are presented in the paper. Fresh quartz sand ‘Szczakowa’ –1K 0.40/0.32/0.20, J88, >1400oC, WK= 1.20 was subjected to the treatment. Examinations were performed in three stages differing in the frequency of electrovibrators operations (which was: 40 Hz, 50 Hz and 60 Hz). For each frequency two settings of the exciting force of the rotodynamic drives were applied. They were equal 42% and 75% of the maximal exciting force. The sand batch placed in the bottom part of the REGMAS reclaimer was, in individual stages, subjected to elementary operations of grinding, rubbing and crushing. The destruction ratio was determined by means of the classic sieve analysis and grain size analysis performed in the Analysette 22NanoTec apparatus.

Opis:
The Baltic Sea is not typically considered as an area affected by tsunamis. However, during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene several tsunami events have been interpreted from the sedimentary record, mainly in Sweden and Estonia. Furthermore, on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, there are historical accounts of catastrophical marine floodings called “der Seebär” (“the Sea Bear”). Their descriptions reveal many features typical for tsunami, but their genesis remained unknown and sedimentary evidence for such events has not been found. Here we provide evidence of sandy event layers from the area of Rogowo, NW Poland – the area of historical catastrophic storms as well as “der Seebär” events. The study area is a low-lying coastal plain with an average elevation of –0.5 to +0.5 m a.s.l., protected from the open sea by beach and coastal dune systems up to 5 m high. Sedimentological, micropalaeontological and geochemical analyses along with AMS 14C dating were applied to sedimentary successions seen in 5 major trenches and 198 sediment cores up to 1.5 m long. Two sandy layers were identified in the peat deposits that developed on the plain during the last ~2000 years. They reveal a number of typical features of tsunami deposits (significant lateral extent and thickness, rip-up clasts, chemical and micropalaeontological evidence of marine origin), however, 14C dating along with the historical accounts revealed that the major layer, extending at least 1.2 km from the modern coasts, was probably deposited by arguably the largest storm surge during the last 2000 years, which took place in 1497 AD. These storm deposits were likely formed during inundation of the low-lying coastal plain after major breaching of coastal dunes resulting in tsunami – like flow pattern and thus similar sedimentological effects. A discontinuous sand layer of younger age (18th century) and sharing similar properties to the previous one may be related to “der Seebär” event or another storm surge. The study revealed that the southern Baltic Sea coast may be affected by much greater coastal flooding than known from more recent accounts and observations. Thus, the presented geological record should be taken as an example of a worst-case scenario in coastal zone risk assessment from natural hazards. These events left sedimentary deposits that resemble tsunami deposits. It is likely that, in similar settings where storm surges cause unidirectional inundation of a coastal plain, it may not be possible to establish whether the resulting deposits were laid down from storms or tsunamis.

Opis:
In this article, there were presented the results of research on combined mechanical and thermal regeneration of waste moulding sand with furfuryl resin originated from one of national foundries manufacturing aluminium alloys castings. Attempts of mechanical reclamation were led on the REGMAS reclaimer enabling to realize preliminary and primary reclamation with use of two modes of mechanical interactions on waste moulding sand. In the first attempt the reclaimer worked without any additional regenerating elements, and as the second solution, the reclaimer operated with additional crushing and abrasive elements to increase the result of primary reclamation. Thermal reclamation was led in the prototypic thermal reclaimer, enabling to fully control the process of grain matrix recovery. As a result of completed investigations the small efficiency of mechanical reclamation was determined. However, use of combined regeneration allowed for obtaining grain matrix of high purity. Thermal regeneration was conducted in prototypic thermal reclaimer. Evaluation of reclaim (reclaimed material) quality was carried out in the way of iginition losses and grain-size analysis, surface morphology and also by executing of strength testing of moulding sand prepared on obtained grain matrix for the particular reclamation operations.

The investigation results of the reclamation of spent moulding sands with furfuryl resin are presented in this paper. The reclamation process was performed in the secondary reclamation chamber of the REGMAS 1.5 vibratory reclaimer. 70 kg portions of moulding sands, previously subjected to the primary reclamation and dedusting, were used. The secondary reclamation was performed in two stages: the first consisted of determining the reclaimer intensity at various reclamation times (5 min, 10 min and 15 min) and various electrovibrator frequencies (40 Hz, 50 Hz and 60 Hz), the second consisted of determining the influence of additional crushing elements on the intensity of processes.

Opis:
Grain size analysis is an important sedimentological tool used to unravel hydrodynamic conditions, mode of transportation and deposition of detrital sediments. For the present study, detailed grain size analysis was carried out in order to decipher the palaeodepositional environment of Middle–Upper Jurassic rocks of the Ler Dome (Kachchh, western India), which is further reinforced by facies analysis. Microtextures were identified as grooves, straight steps and V-shaped pits, curved steps and solution pits suggesting the predominance of chemical solution activity. Grain size statistical parameters (Graphic and Moment parameters) were used to document depositional processes, sedimentation mechanisms and conditions of hydrodynamic energy, as well as to discriminate between various depositional environments. The grain size parameters show that most of the sandstones are medium- to coarse-grained, moderately to well sorted, strongly fine skewed to fine skewed and mesokurtic to platykurtic in nature. The abundance of medium- to coarse-grained sandstones indicates fluctuating energy levels of the deposition medium and sediment type of the source area. The bivariate plots show that the samples are mostly grouped, except for some samples that show a scattered trend, which is either due to a mixture of two modes in equal proportion in bimodal sediments or good sorting in unimodal sediments. The linear discriminant function analysis is predominantly indicative of turbidity current deposits under shallow-marine conditions. The C-M plots indicate that the sediments formed mainly by rolling to bottom suspension and rolling condition in a beach subenvironment. Log probability curves show that the mixing between the suspension and saltation populations is related to variable energy conditions.

Opis:
The preliminary stage of asphalt mixture production involves the drying and dedusting of coarse aggregates. The most common types of coarse aggregates used are limestone and basalt. In the process of drying and dedusting the dryer filter accumulates large quantities of waste in the form of mineral powder. This paper introduces an investigation into limestone powder waste as a potential microfiller of polymer composites. Physical characteristics such as the granulation the of powder collected from the filter - in terms of the season of its collection and the type of input materials used - were analysed. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for the investigation described within this paper. The obtained results were compared against those of other materials which can be used as polymer composites microfillers.

Opis:
Beach sands from the Rosa Marina locality (Adriatic coast, southern Italy) were analysed mainly microscopically in order to trace the source areas of their lithoclastic and bioclastic components. The main cropping out sedimentary units were also studied with the objective to identify the potential source areas of lithoclasts. This allowed to establish how the various rock units contribute to the formation of beach sands. The analysis of the bioclastic components allows to estimate the actual role of organisms regarding the supply of this material to the beach. Identification of taxa that are present in the beach sands as shell fragments or other remains was carried out at the genus or family level. Ecological investigation of the same beach and the recognition of sub-environments (mainly distinguished on the basis of the nature of the substrate and of the water depth) was the key topic that allowed to establish the actual source areas of bioclasts in the Rosa Marina beach sands. The sedimentological analysis (including a physical study of the beach and the calculation of some statistical parameters concerning the grain-size curves) shows that the Rosa Marina beach is nowadays subject to erosion.

This paper focuses on the development of a semi-automatic calculation tool to measure the Mean Linear Intercept (MLI) grain size of ceramics and other materials. The calculation tool was first verified and validated by using a certified micro-ruler and literature microstructures. It was then used to investigate the grain growth of UO2 pellets elaborated under different conditions. The tool offers the advantage of accuracy as well as the ability to quantify microstructures obtained with poor image quality. The estimated measurement errors were found to be less than 1 μm. The developed tool, mainly for the purpose of time-saving, allowed us to follow the microstructure (grain size) evolution of the elaborated UO2 fuel with different additives.

The relationship between results from granulometric analyses of by sieving and by planimetry was investigated by numerical simulation of cubes filled with boulders, cobbles and pebbles. Cross-sections through the sediment were simulated and compared with photos of an actual outcrop wall. Volumes estimated on the basis of planimetric analysis using the cross-sections were compared with sieve analyses, thus allowing to determine adjustment coefficients. The coefficients for pebbles and cobbles have a small standard error, but are larger for boulders, which might be a consequence of too small areas formed by the cross-sections.

The mounting bolt hole of aircraft engine exhaust cone was found cracked in the weld area. Exhaust cone material is alfa/beta titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy. The cracked section will be repaired by welding to restore its function. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on ductility, grain size, and shear strength of Ti-6Al-4V plates (0.063 in. thickness) welded by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) using commercial purity (CP) titanium wire electrode (AMS 4951H). The weld quality was evaluated by non-destructive and destructive tests, using the acceptance criteria of AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 as references. The effect of PWHT was examined by preparing two weld specimens: with and without PWHT at 620 centigrade. Non-destructive inspection by dye penetrant and xray radiography tests revealed that the weld in these two specimens is free from surface and internal defects. Weld specimen without PWHT is brittle and failed during fillet break test, whereas PWHT specimen is ductile and pass the same test. Metallography observation was conducted to measured grain size of base metal and heat affected zone (HAZ). The average grain size of PWHT specimen is 18.40 mi m on base metal and 36.80 mi m on HAZ, and for non-PWHT specimen is 26.85 mi m on base metal and 52.10 mi m on HAZ. Using Hall-Petch approach, the yield strength is calculated about 920 MPa on the base metal of PWHT specimen, which result in the shear strength of about 531 MPa. Under static loading, the shear stress on the outer surface of exhaust cone due to exhaust gas is about 38 MPa, which is much lower than material shear strength.
