Experimental investigation was conducted to find out microstructural characteristic changes arising in the weldments AZ80A Mg alloys obtained using the friction stir welding. Tools with three different pin profile geometries were employed during this investigation at constant tool rotational speed and feed rate. Tensile tests are performed and the tensile fracture surfaces are examined using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the obtained SEM images are used for microstructural investigations. From the experimental results, it was observed that the geometry of the tool pin plays a significant role in producing essential stirring action there by regulating the flow of the plasticized material and leading to the formation of small sized grains having equally distributed fine strengthening precipitates. These structured grains have a direct reflecting impact in increasing the hardness and mechanical properties of the fabricated joints at the nugget zone of the friction stir welded AZ80A Mg alloy joints.

Opis:
Turbine blades have complex geometries with free form surface. Blades have different thickness at the trailing and leading edges as well as sharp bends at the chord-tip shroud junction and sharp fins at the tip shroud. In investment casting of blades, shrinkage at the tip-shroud and cord junction is a common casting problem. Because of high temperature applications, grain structure is also critical in these castings in order to avoid creep. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of different process parameters, such as, shell thickness, insulation and casting temperature on shrinkage porosity and grain size. The test geometry used in this study was a thin-walled air-foil structure which is representative of a typical hot-gas-path rotating turbine component. It was observed that, in thin sections, increased shell thickness helps to increase the feeding distance and thus avoid interdendritic shrinkage. It was also observed that grain size is not significantly affected by shell thickness in thin sections. Slower cooling rate due to the added insulation and steeper thermal gradient at metal mold interface induced by the thicker shell not only helps to avoid shrinkage porosity but also increases fill-ability in thinner sections.

The article presents research aimed at determining the effect of adding rare earth elements to near-eutectic Al-Si and Al-Si-Ni alloys on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the obtained products. Material for the research was prepared using a melt spinner - a device used for rapid crystallization, casting thin ribbons, which were then subjected in subsequent stages to fragmentation, consolidation and plastic working. The ribbons and extruded rods cast were described in terms of their structure and their strength properties were determined at different measurement temperatures. It was shown that the lightweight materials produced from aluminium alloys using the rapid solidification process have an ultra-fine structure and good strength properties. Analysis under a microscope confirmed that the addition of rare earth alloys Al-Si and Al-Si-Ni causes fragmentation of the microstructure in the tapes produced. The presence of rare earth elements in the alloys tested has an impact on the type and the morphology of the particles of the microstructure’s individual components. In addition to the change in particle morphology, the phenomenon of the separation of numerous nanometric particles of intermetallic phases containing rare earth elements was also observed. The change in microstructure caused by the addition of rare earth elements in the form of a mischmetal increases the mechanical properties.

The article presents the analysis of complex stress states in the concrete structure of grain silos, caused by non-centric emptying. The authors present a combination of loads from the pressure of bulk solid on the silo chamber according to Eurocode 1, Part 4 [11], which should be taken into account when emptying on large eccentricities in action assessment class 3 (AAC3) silos. For the example of a cylindrical wheat silo with a height of 25 m and a diameter of 10 m, the researchers carried out an analysis regarding the impact of the size of the eccentric discharge outlet on the distributions of forces and bending moments in a reinforced concrete wall.

The research aimed to determine the yield level of selected maize varieties grown for grain with organic and inte-grated farming systems. The field experiment was conducted in 2017–2019 at Kępa Agricultural Experimental Station using the method of crossed sub-block method in 4 replications. The first-order factor was the maize variety, the second-order factor – the production system. The assessed maize varieties cultivated in the integrated system (after wheat and stubble intercrop in combi-nation with natural and mineral fertilization) yielded better, on average by 12.1% than in the organic system. Maize grown in the integrated system was characterized by a 4.1% greater weight of a thousand grains, a 3.6% greater weight of grain from one cob, and a 2% greater number of grains per cob than in the organic system. The maize plants were about 6.5% higher and set the cob about 10% higher than in the organic system. However, the length and diameter of the cob as well as the proportion of grain in the cob were similar in both production systems. In the organic system, the cultivation of the cultivars Ambrosini and Silvestre ensured a yield level higher by about 8% (on average 9.4 t ha-1) compared to the average yields of the cultivars Smolitop and Ricardinio. In the integrated system, Ambrosini and Ricardinio yielded better (on average 10 t ha-1), the grain yield was 9.2% higher than the other two cultivars. In both production systems, Smolitop had the lowest yield; its yield was around 10% lower than that of Ambro-sini in the organic system and that of Ricardinio in the integrated system. The highest weight and number of grains per cob, irre-spectively of the production system, was characterized by Ricar-dinio, and the lowest by Smolitop (the difference was 5.1% and 9.4%, respectively). Ambrosini was characterized by the smallest caryopsis (307 g on average), while Smolitop was larger by about 21 g. Plants of Ricardinio were the tallest and set the cob highest on the stem regardless of the production system. However, the length and diameter of the cob of the tested cultivars were similar.

Opis:
The aim of the studies described in this article was to present the effect of rare earth elements on aluminium alloys produced by an unconventional casting technique. The article gives characteristics of the thin strip of Al-Si-RE alloy produced by Rapid Solidification (RS). The effect of rare earth elements on structure refinement, i.e. on the size of near-eutectic crystallites in an aluminium–silicon alloy, was discussed. To determine the size of crystallites, the Scherrer X-ray diffraction method was used. The results presented capture relationships showing the effect of variable casting parameters and chemical composition on microstructure of the examined alloys. Rapid Solidification applied to Al-Si alloys with the addition of mischmetal (Ce, La, Ne, Pr) refines their structure.
Celem badań opisanych w artykule było przedstawienie wpływu pierwiastków metali ziem rzadkich na stopy aluminium otrzymywane niekonwencjonalną metodą odlewniczą. W artykule scharakteryzowano cienką taśmę ze stopu Al-Si-RE wytworzoną metodą szybkiej krystalizacji (Rapid Solidification). Przedstawiono wpływ pierwiastków metali ziem rzadkich na rozdrobnienie struktury - wielkość krystalitów okołoeutektycznego stopu aluminium - krzem. Do oznaczenia wielkości krystalitów wykorzystano rentgenowską dyfrakcyjną metodę Scherrera. Zaprezentowane wyniki ujmują zależności zmiennych parametrów odlewania i składu chemicznego na mikrostrukturę badanych stopów. Zastosowanie szybkiej krystalizacji dla stopów Al-Si z dodatkiem miszmetalu (Ce, La, Ne, Pr) powoduje rozdrobnienie ich struktury.
