Opis:
The aim of the study was to answer whether there is a relationship between organisational cynicism and communication. Organizational cynicism is considered to be an attitude towards those in power in an organization. Communication is analysed in its two aspects: “onstage”, where information is expected to be shared to achieve the company’s goals, and “offstage”, beyond the organizational rules and procedures, which mostly satisfies employees’ need for information. The flow of information is blocked “onstage” if employees keep silent and it flows freely offstage when they gossip. It was hypothesised that the cognitive aspect of the cynical attitude would predict negative gossip about superiors, and its affective aspect would predict employee silence. To verify the hypotheses, two correlational studies and one experimental study were conducted with participants recruited from different organisations (N = 472). The results showed that cognitive cynicism is related to an increase in negative gossip about a supervisor and partly support the expectation about relation between affective cynicism and employee silence. The results are discussed in the context of practical consequences of the relations between organizational cynicism and communication.

Opis:
Drawing on James Scott’s works on “everyday resistance” and “weapons of the weak”, this article inquires whether Roman Catholic women’s gossip and jokes about priests may lead to a redefinition of priest-parishioners’ relations. Using ethnographic material collected during field research in rural Poland, the article demonstrates the ambivalent nature of anticlerical jokes and rumours, which, rather than constituting a tool of change, reaf- firm the existing order. In putting forward this argument, the article critically engages with Scott’s theory and reflects on the problematic role of researchers in presenting the issue of agency and resistance. The analyzed case-study from the Polish countryside constitutes a point of departure for addressing a broader context of church-state relations and the situation of women in the Catholic Church in Poland.

Opis:
The paper concerns new immigrants (on the example of Polish-Chinese neighbourhood) but in two folklore phenomena: gossip and urban legend. The author demonstrates the process of formation the Polish-Chinese relationships resulting in – established in 2010 – economic cooperation between the city authorities and Chinese investors in the Silesian city of Jaworzno in Poland, where is located the Chinese largest Wholesale Center „Silesia Chinese Center” in the southern part of the country. The contact of such different cultures in the space of the city brought new urban legends and creates gossips, heroes of which were the Chinese people. Basing on her field research the author tries to answer the question of the source of these processes and their impact on the quality of Polish-Chinese relationships in the city.

Opis:
The article discusses rumours recorded by the German Security Service [Sicherheitsdienst, SD] in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia between 1 January and 10 April 1943. The author pursues quantitative and qualitative analysis and discusses rumours shared by Czech and German inhabitants of the country. The analysis results indicate that early 1943 saw a real crisis of confidence in the state and the Nazi regime among Germans living in the Protectorate. The Czech public opinion had likely reached a turning point, still highly afraid of German repressions, but also with a growing hope for the defeat of the Reich and a swift end to the war.

Opis:
The main aim of the text is to discuss a conception of conspiracy theory as narration which draw a parallel with gossip and urban legend as far as its features and functions are concerned. The author chooses the example of the false flag operation which concerns September 11 attacks and describes it as a unique category of myth which legitimizes actions taken by – for instance – the ruling class. The author builds her conceptual frame on the Malinowski’s theory of myth and its function – she tries to prove that it can be still valid in contemporary anthropology.
