Opis:
The author of the article Christ as the face of the Father’s mercy. A top-down and theophanic conception of God’s Mercy draws the most fundamental approach to the mystery of mercy as a form of the inner revelation of the Triune God's life from the ample Polish literature devoted to the issue of God’s Mercy, and analyzes it. Also practicing mercy, according to this conception, may be done in the right way if its features are recognized in Jesus Christ the Incarnated Son’s deeds. The author calls this perspective of theology of mercy “a top-down conception”, as humanity is not able to comprehend the essence of mercy without the aid of the supernatural world that, on the one hand, shows what God is like in His essence, and on the other, how one should follow God to be saved. God's self-revelation in the salutary events becomes – according to the author – the best interpretation key of God's theology of mercy, showing His Trinitarian character.

Opis:
First staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010, Dennis Kelly’s The Gods Weep is an attempt to update the well-known story of King Lear to contemporary times. It focuses on Colm, an aging CEO who decides to divide his company evenly between two of his employees at the price of his only son’s share, a decision that results in escalating a bloody conflict that tears apart the business empire. Despite featuring an all-star cast and having the full support of the RSC, The Gods Weep received mixed to wholly negative reviews and was criticized for being chaotic, lengthy and not faithful enough to the masterpiece of the Bard. The present article addresses the problems raised by the critics and attempts to demonstrate that their responses were largely misguided, as most of them failed to recognize the full complexity of what they were dealing with. Thus the paper first shows that Kelly’s play is not merely a response to King Lear but, rather, a bricolage that recycles Akira Kurosawa’s Ran and Sarah Kane’s Blasted as well as a number of other works. The article then suggests that The Gods Weep is not an adaptation but an appropriation, as it shifts the political thrust of the hypotext and bears a mark of Kelly’s in-yer-face sensibility. Finally, the contribution argues that, given the range of sources that are being recycled, the play should not be viewed as an appropriation of a single text. Building on the concept of the “work” as formulated in Margaret Jane Kidnie’s Shakespeare and the Problem of Adaptation, I suggest that The Gods Weep should be viewed in the context of all texts which may be subsumed under what I call the “Lear type.”

Tob 13:2 is found in the context of the hymn of praise of Tobit in Tobit 13. The chapter contains a Zion Song in 13:9-18 addressed to Jerusalem, similar to those found especially in Ap Zion (11QPsa XXII 1-15]) and Bar 4:30-5:9. The latter two do not have the idea of resurrection that appears in Tob 13:2, which in its immediate context (v. 1-8) is closely connected with 13:9-18. The paper aims at providing an overview of Tobit 13 in the context of the book and in relation to Ap Zion (11QPsa XXII 1-15) and Bar 4:30–5:9, while summing up the most important differences of the three Zion songs and attempting to explain the presence of the idea of resurrection in Tobit 13. The main arguments are as follows: the appearance of the concept of resurrection in relation to that of God’s kingship in proximity to a Zion song has to do – among others – with the characteristic content of Tobit’s and his family’s storyline in Tobit 1–12 and with the concern to combine notions of national and personal fate. The study refers to some of the scriptural influences on Tobit 13 and their significance, and treats the questions of the author’s view on God’s kingship, authority and on retribution at a national and individual level.

The problem of discipline, and motivation in the learning process, is ever more glaring in catechesis. The assertive approach attempts to, at least partially, solve this problem in modern education. This discussion will show that it is possible to use this approach if assertiveness is enriched by the fundamental anthropological discovery as developed by P. Ricoeur in his hermeneutics of selfhood. He does not see human personality as static, but as dynamic, which gives key roles to three forms of passivity: towards one’s own body, towards others, and towards one’s conscience. The concept of passivity will be woven into catechesis, which aligns better to the spirit of Christian theology. The example of Jesus’ catechesis on the road to Emmaus will be used to show the practical usefulness of assertiveness, and the triple passivity in Christian evangelization.

Opis:
The article deals with the theological issues of Homer and Heraclitus. The analysis of the works of Homer and the philosophical thought of Heraclitus serves to compare and contrast them extracting significant differences regarding the image of god and man. The author develops both literary and philosophical understanding of gods. She compares the man-god relationship in early Greek literature and philosophy. There is an interesting intrinsic tension in the literary tropes that can only be understood if the religious function of this literature is taken into account. The author tries to describe the vision of the world and the place of human beings in it in both sources: literature and philosophy. In philosophical writings, there can be seen a movement in the vision of the world structure: the gods become more inaccessible to humans, but humans gain the opportunity to become godlier if they follow a proper set of thoughts and actions proposed by philosophy. Religious poets were speaking of the past when the gods were approachable to people. Their fantasies were often mixed with old beliefs so that the divine-human world has as much wonder and eccentricity as dread. Philosophy conquers not only minds but also hearts, to convey them towards the ideal, bearing in mind the unattainable model of a virtuous man. While religion describes gods similar to humans, philosophy forges a new god-resemblant human figure.
Artykuł dotyczy zagadnień teologicznych u Homera i Heraklita. Analiza dzieł Homera i myśli filozoficznej Heraklita służy ich porównaniu i zestawieniu, wydobywając istotne różnice dotyczące obrazu boga i człowieka. Autorka rozwija zarówno literackie, jak i filozoficzne rozumienie bogów. Porównuje relację człowiek–bóg we wczesnej greckiej literaturze i filozofii. Podczas gdy religia opisuje bogów podobnych do ludzi, filozofia tworzy nową postać człowieka przypominającą boga.

Opis:
Do nich należą: niesądzenie bliźnich, okazywanie im przebaczenia i wspieranie w jakichkolwiek potrzebach. Tak świadcząc miłosierdzie drugiemu, człowiek spełnia się w człowieczeństwie i daje świadectwo Bogu.
The main purpose of this article is to show the attitude of human mercy. This purpose was implemented in three stages. In the first place, the source of human attitude of mercy was revealed. It is the mercy of God who called man into existence, he redeemed him in Christ and continues to give him this mercy in the Holy Spirit. The next stage of reflection was about capturing the essence of human attitude of mercy. In the course of scientific analyzes, it was stated that the attitude of mercy manifests itself in showing to those in need the respect of their dignity in entrusting to God. The last stage of reflection was to present multiple forms of human attitude of mercy. These include: do not judge your fellow men, show them forgiveness and support them in any need. Thus, by giving mercy to the other, man fulfills himself in humanity and gives testimony to God.

God’s name “Elohim,” common in the Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition, is always used with verbs in the singular even though it is in the plural form. It is shown here that the ungrammatical usage can be seen as the best solution to a natural problem. Namely, tradition assumes that it should be impossible to talk about a general category of gods within which the one God could be located. The best and perhaps the only way to prevent the implicit pluralization of the unique God is to put his name in plural even though it is intended to be used as if it were singular. One cannot form the plural form of the name that is already grammatically plural! Surprisingly, this explanation seems to have been considered by neither classical nor modern commentators.

The double use of the word with the καθαρ root in the text of Wis 7:22–28 may set the interpretative direction for the discussion of the whole pericope. The exegesis of the pericope in the key of purity shows the following possibility of understanding the text: the moral aspect of purity of Wisdom can be imparted by it to pure people. A contradiction (paradox) in the text which concerns the subject of purity is observed: purity is, on the one hand, a condition, on the other, an effect of Wisdom’s imparting action. A look at the further context of pericope Wis 7:22–28 (in particular Wis 9 and Wis 10) can lead to a probable solution to this potential contradiction: it lies in the idea of being elected by God, which anticipates human action.

Opis:
Jacob Arminius is a figure historically associated with the Reformed tradition. His theology was in a large measure a reflection of this tradition. However, in some important points Arminius’ views were in open contradiction to post-Reformation Calvinism. This article is an attempt to find an answer to the question about the theological identity of the Dutch reformer. The author proposes to address this problem in reference to four theological themes characteristic of Reformed Protestantism, that is: God’s sovereignty and glory, covenant theology, monergistic soteriology, and predestination. The analysis indicates that Leiden’s professor strongly emphasized God’s sovereignty over creation and affirmed that the ultimate end of divine actions, including salvific acts, is His glory. But he never forgot to add that, by His external activity, the Creator communicates His goodness. Arminian covenant theology also fits into Reformed thought. Its shape does not differ from the widely accepted interpretation of this issue in the era of “early orthodoxy.” The most important differences occur in the context of soteriology. Arminius’ understanding of the relationship between grace and free will differed from the radical monergistic Calvinism. Due to the doctrine of prevenient grace, one can speak about limited synergism in his case. His perspective on the issue of predestination is the same. According to the Dutch reformer, God elects to salvation on the basis of His foreknowledge concerning the free acceptance of grace by man. He reprobates those who stubbornly remain in their sins and, in spite of the grace, refuse to convert. Therefore, ultimately, Arminius should be considered as a “critical” Reformed theologian.

The article shows the way in which the discovery of the existence of the Absolute is made in existential metaphysics. This existential metaphysics provides us with knowledge about reality. It shows the content of the experience of being, the content given to us in the transcendentals. It also unveils the foundation of the rational order, which is given to us in the discovery of the first principles of the existence of being and of cognition. Metaphysics provides us also with knowledge concerning the structure of being. It shows us being as composite and plural; being which is “insufficient” in its structure and calls for an explanation. That being—that is problematized in existence, given to us in experience, and incompletely intelligible in itself—lifts us toward its ultimate “complement” and understanding, to the Absolute.

In the writings of St. Augustine, the Latin word cor occurs more than 8,000 times, being one of the most important, though ambiguous, terms of his anthropology and spirituality. As a synonym for the inner man (homo interior) it encompasses the whole affective, intellectual, moral and religious life. In this sense, it is the privileged place for a personal encounter with God. The analysis of Augustine’s writings reveals a link between the concept of the Trinity and indications concerning the spiritual life of man. Reflections on the “heart” can be put into a kind of triptych: creation “in the image of God,” illumination by Christ, and dilatation by the Holy Spirit. The impact of God on the human heart should find its completion in a voluntarily adopted attitude of adoration, humility and love.

The rising interest in awareness is a modern phenomenon which can be interpreted as an attempt to reconstruct, what seems to be an extremely important but still missing aspect in our lives in a secular society. True awareness is a rare quality which goes beyond simple self-awareness and growth in attentiveness. True awareness allows us to become aware of our own strengths and weaknesses, become less judgmental, more proactive, emotionally more mature and open to a metareality: love, compassion, creativity, personal evolution. This modern interest in awareness in many ways overlaps with the Ignatian examen as a way of finding God and God’s blessings in our daily life. The focus of the examen is much more than awareness of past events; it is the moment of deep connection with God in the present moment.
