Opis:
The following essay retraces the genre development and correlations of three 1980s hard rock subgenres: glam metal, sleaze metal and hair metal. This issue is consid- ered, primarily, with reference to the theory of hegemonic and non-hegemonic masculini- ties developed by Raewyn Connell and reviewed against the theory of genre development by Jennifer C. Lena and Richard A. Peterson. Both theories are employed in order to un- derline the subtle differences between the subgenres, arguably linked to the masculinities performed by the artists’ assumed stage personas. Aside from the scholarly references, the research includes various interviews with the artists and music journalists, an analysis of over a hundred song lyrics and the vast repertoire of visual arts accompanying the music.

Opis:
Genres are among the most discussed topics in popular music studies. The attempt to explain issues as complex and layered as how musical genres are born, how they work and what they ontologically are cannot avoid opening a box full of theoretical problems, questions and tools that need to be understood and used in order to say something significant on genre today. Despite the long story of this theoretical debate (roots of which can be traced back to ancient Greece) and the variety of disciplines involved (e.g. literature, music and film studies, but also philosophy, sociology, cultural studies and semiotics), it is difficult to find survey papers that can give an overview of such a rich research environment. This paper attempts to fill that void by trying to systematize the main (contemporary) perspectives on musical genre, in particular non-essentialist theories coming from the overlapping fields of musicology and sociology. Most importantly, its overview stresses the necessity of an interdisciplinary study of musical genre, which – as an exemplum of extraordinarily layered phenomenon of the human production of culture – intertwines technical, social, discursive, commercial, historical and other elements, thus requiring an approach capable of accounting for as much of its many layers of meaning as possible.

Joanna the Wife of Chuza by Lesya Ukrainka as a New Model of Communication in Modern Ukrainian Literature

Opis:
This article examines the drama Joanna the Wife of Chuza (1909) by Lesya Ukrainka, who is one of the defining figures in the history of modern Ukrainian literature. This work is considered an example  of creating a new communicative model, introducing the poetics of an open work in the Ukrainian literature and establishing a new relationship between writer and audience. The incompleteness of the central image of this work, and therefore of the corresponding behavioral model and worldview, leads to the absence of a plot ending which would be the final solution to the conflict. In this way, Ukrainka establishes a new reading practice, not limited to experiencing the ‘life world’ of the author’s work. As reference to the history of thetext shows, it corresponds to the author’s conscious instruction, with which the composition of the work agrees: the events take place in a special period of time, when the previous story has already ended and the new one has not yet begun (after the crucifixion of Christ, but not after the resurrection). At the same time, the spatial organization of the work emphasizes the position of readers, turning them from interested witnesses to active searchers. The example of Joanna is all the more telling because it undermines the hegemony of the novel in twentieth-century literature and draws attention to literary forms that correspond to a particular literary situation, especially that of ‘submerged population groups’ (Frank O’Connor). The change introduced by Lesya Ukrainka at the level of a separate work is also a change within the genre as a way of communicating between an author and a reader; it is also a change in the very notion of literature as a certain type of aesthetic experience and as a culturally established way of cognitive and rhetorical response to a certain type of situation.

Opis:
The topic of this article is situated at the intersection of cognitive linguistics, multimodality studies, film studies, psychology, and genre theory. The article’s goal is to contribute to multimodal cognitive linguistics by discussing the concept of ‘film genre’, which has so far been under-represented in this research area, from the perspective of major theories of conceptual representation with a view to characterizing film genre as a viable theoretical concept of multimodal cognitive linguistics. Specifically, the schema-based characterization of the concept of film genre proposed in this article is meant to account for such theoretically problematic aspects of film genres and their filmic exemplifications as textualization, inclusiveness, exclusiveness, hierarchicality, and filmic multivalency.

Opis:
Drawing upon the theoretical writings of Tzvetan Todorov and Georg Lukács on the subject of the novel, this essay argues for more widespread recognition of the biography as a literary genre. It frames the genre of biography as a genre of radical incompleteness, discussing the search for verisimilitude and the tendency toward fragmentation in the biographer’s pursuit — a quality that describes not only the biographer’s sources, but also the contingent, broken nature of the intellectual and emotional space that both the biographical subject and the biographer herself inhabit.
