    The research presented in this article focuses on the urban region of Novosibirsk, which is one of the most industrialized part of Siberia and the Asian part of Russian Federation. To show relationships between the city as the core of the region and its peripheral area a case study analysing territorial units within the southern settlement belt along the Novosibirsk–Cherepanovo regional railway line over a distance of approx. 100 km. This belt was chosen because of the continuity of the settlement and due to the presence of different functional types of edge towns. The adopted system, from the core to the area of weakening direct links to Novosibirsk, helped to define the directional profile of the urban region as relating to the demographic and economic characteristics. The research was based on two methods of determining the functions of cities in the national settlement system: a research programme concerning the genesis of functional development and a research programme of specialised functions, the purpose of which is to determine the economic base (exogenous functions) of territorial units. The presented results have shown general tendencies in the transformations of the Novosibirsk urban region’s spatial structure, both in long-term perspective (the generic view of function development) and under contemporary circumstances related to the economic transformation of Russia.

    Modern cities are undergoing intensive changes along with increasing globalisation and developing a knowledge-based economy. As a result of these changes, modern large cities, known as metropolises, are also emerging. With their creation, the surroundings of these cities are also changing. Urban functional areas are being created, often referred to as metropolitan areas. The further surroundings of large cities are also undergoing transformations, however, not always perceived as positive.
    Współczesne miasta ulegają intensywnym zmianom wraz z narastającą globalizacją i kształtowaniem się gospodarki opartej na wiedzy. W wyniku tych zmian powstają także nowoczesne duże miasta określane mianem metropolii. Wraz z ich tworzeniem zmienia się także otoczenie tych miast. Powstają miejskie obszary funkcjonalne zwane obszarami metropolitalnymi. Dalsze otoczenie dużych miast także ulega przekształceniom, przy czym nie zawsze są to pozytywne przekształcenia.

    Background: The most common risk factors for running-related injuries are mistakes, such as insufficient warm-up and stretching exercises, during training. Good preparation and proper training reduces the risk of sport-related injuries. Aim of the study: To examine fundamental movement patterns and likelihood of injury in amateur runners. Material and methods: Twenty-four amateur long-distance runners from Opole region (Poland) were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 12 runners from the club “Kotwica Brzeg”, who did a proper warmup before training and stretching exercises after training. The second group comprised 12 runners from other clubs who did not undertake any warm-up or stretching exercises (control group). Fundamental movement patterns were tested by the Functional Movement Screen test (FMS). Results: The mean FMS test score was higher in “Kotwica Brzeg” runners (17.08 points) than in the control group (15.50 points), but this was not statistically significant. The “Kotwica Brzeg” runners performed better in five of the FMS tests, but this was only significant for the rotational stability test. Conclusions: Runners who did a proper warm-up and stretching exercises achieved better results in the FMS test, which may reduce the risk of running-related injuries.

    This research deals with the presence and potential of the manufacturing industry in the urban settlements of Łódzkie Voivodeship. Its cognitive goal is to recognise the present share of industry in the economic and functional base of those settlements that, as a result of the system transformation, underwent restructuring and deindustrialisation, and the shrinking of its economic base. The re-development of this base and functions, appropriate to the role of towns and cities in the settlement system, requires new paths and indicating them is the application objective of the research. The work is based on the theory of the economic base of settlements, using statistical and cartographic methods including ‘heat maps’ as well as ‘employment surplus’ and the Amemiya indicator. Studies have shown that both economic and industrial potential are concentrated in the urban settlements of the Łódź agglomeration but decrease especially towards the south and south-east, and that traditional sectors still dominate. Despite intensive deindustrialisation, industry still plays a significant role in the economic base and functions of most small and medium towns of the voivodeship, as well as parts of some large urban settlements. Further economic development, and the role in it of small and medium towns depends on their further industrialisation or re-industrialisation, while of large and medium urban centres – on knowledge-based services.

    Mazovian Voivodeship is an area where socio-economic situation is signifi cantly diverse. It is a real challenge for regional development policy which in Poland aims at increasing competitiveness and achieving cohesion by 2020. The use of selected taxonomic measures to compare the development level of selected communes in Mazovia allowed to determine whether the regional policy so far has led to socio-economic growth of all or just some of the investigated communes. Those urban-rural and rural communes of the highest development level in the Mazovia region seem to create a quite coherent area around Warsaw; it was proved by the results of statistical analysis with the use of the relative development level and Hellwig’s measure for the years 2002 and 2009.
    Województwo mazowieckie jest obszarem o dużym zróżnicowaniu sytuacji społeczno-gospodarczej. Stanowi to ogromne wyzwanie dla polityki rozwoju regionalnego, w której do 2020 roku zaplanowano w Polsce zarówno wzmacnianie konkurencyjności, jak i osiąganie spójności. Zastosowanie wybranych miar taksonomicznych do porównania poziomu rozwoju gmin Mazowsza pozwoliło na próbę wskazania tych gmin wiejskich i miejsko-wiejskich, które składają się na obszar funkcjonalny Warszawy. Ponadto wyniki analiz przy użyciu względnego poziomu rozwoju (BZW) oraz miary Hellwiga wskazują na ukształtowanie się relacji stabilnych w czasie, co udowodniło porównanie wyników dla lat 2002 i 2009.
