Opis:
Cauchy paved the way for constructing models in concrete technology, and elsewhere. He determined the (nonflat) surface area in 3D by measuring random total projections. Analogously, he determined the length of a curved line in 2D by way of measuring the total projections. The paper will present the mathematical expressions, because in many branches of concrete technology, modelling is found based on such Cauchy concepts. These branches – fractography in compression, tension or shear, fibre reinforcement and permeability estimation – will briefly be mentioned to demonstrate this. It has been found that, for the discussed fields of engineering relevance, major model parameters for cementitious materials are similar to those developed by Cauchy in the 19th century. In the paper some previous investigations concerning fractography, fibre reinforcement and fracture roughness will be summarized but basically a new development on porosimetry will be presented. Particularly a new achievement of successful implementation of the methodology (also based on Cauchy) for optimizing permeability estimation will be discussed.

Opis:
The present paper focuses on the shear strength exhibited by rocks and soils when sliding along dry and wet surfaces, with this mechanism of failure being strongly related to the water lubrication phenomenon. It is well known that the frictional behaviour of geomaterials requires multiscale investigation. Under this perspective, experimental evidence of both friction at the grain scale (i.e. interparticle friction) and friction along sliding surfaces of rock and granular soil samples (i.e. surface friction) are analysed by using data from the literature. The review is addressed at linking different scales, stating the differences between rocks and soils in terms of frictional response to sliding and trying to point out still open problems for the research.

Opis:
Since fatigue cracks nucleate and initiate generally at the surface of the rotary components such as blades and discs, the surface condition is the most important factor affecting the fatigue life. Surface scratches are suitable sites for stress concentrations and therefore the nucleation stage of fatigue cracks will be shortened. In the present work, the influence of surface roughness on the low cycle fatigue life behavior of nickel-based superalloy Rene®80 at the temperature of 900°C was evaluated. Results of low cycle fatigue tests (LCF) under strain-controlled condition at 900°C for R = εmin/εmax = 0 and strain rate of 2×10-3 s-1, at a total strain range of 1.2% showed an inverse relationship between fatigue strength and surface roughness of the specimens. In this study, increasing the surface roughness of Rene®80 from 0.2 μm to 5.4 μm led to the decline in the final LCF life from 127 cycles to 53 cycles which indicated a 58.3% reduction in fatigue life at the same condition. Fractography evaluation also exhibited that fatigue cracks initiated from the notch in the rough specimens, whereas in the smooth specimen fatigue cracks nucleated from the internal imperfections and carbides.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of analysis of surface roughness parameters in the Krosno Sandstones of Mucharz, southern Poland. It was aimed at determining whether these parameters are influenced by structural features (mainly the laminar distribution of mineral components and directional distribution of non-isometric grains) and fracture processes. The tests applied in the analysis enabled us to determine and describe the primary statistical parameters used in the quantitative description of surface roughness, as well as specify the usefulness of contact profilometry as a method of visualizing spatial differentiation of fracture processes in rocks. These aims were achieved by selecting a model material (Krosno Sandstones from the Górka–Mucharz Quarry) and an appropriate research methodology. The schedule of laboratory analyses included: identification analyses connected with non-destructive ultrasonic tests, aimed at the preliminary determination of rock anisotropy, strength point load tests (cleaved surfaces were obtained due to destruction of rock samples), microscopic analysis (observation of thin sections in order to determine the mechanism of inducing fracture processes) and a test method of measuring surface roughness (two- and three-dimensional diagrams, topographic and contour maps, and statistical parameters of surface roughness). The highest values of roughness indicators were achieved for surfaces formed under the influence of intragranular fracture processes (cracks propagating directly through grains). This is related to the structural features of the Krosno Sandstones (distribution of lamination and bedding).
