Opis:
This paper addresses the issue of participation in additional activities in foreign languages among Polish students aged 7–15. Foreign language skills are important in recruitment to secondary school and university. In the labour market, there is also a considerable wage premium for foreign language skills. Participation in such activities is therefore a form of investment in human capital. In this work we distinguish two kinds of additional foreign language activities: paid and free, and we show their different characteristics, which is our contribution to the literature. We check whether the key factors on the demand and supply side of additional activities such as family socio-economic status (SES) and size of the place of residence affect the participation in paid and free activities in a similar way. We also examine gender differences in additional foreign language activities participation. For the purpose of our analysis, we use data from the second round of the Determinants of Educational Decisions study (UDE) and apply the multinomial logit regression model. Our results indicate that family SES and size of the place of residence are important factors for probability of participation in paid foreign language activities. For participation in free activities, family SES does not matter. The-refore, these classes can contribute to equalising educational opportunities. We also find that girls are more likely to participate in both paid and free activities in foreign languages.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to identify key areas as well as to offer an overview of significant topics that should be addressed within training for foreign language teachers, enabling them to use the educational potential of the German-Polish border region in intercultural foreign languages teaching. In order to achieve this goal, in the first part of the paper the main concepts of pupiloriented education in a border region will be described (i.e. cross-border cooperation, learner-orientation, region-orientation, participation, sustainability, and competence for successful living and communicating in a border region), as they give insights into the essential fields of knowledge and skills that should be aimed at in terms of teacher-oriented activities during the process of professionalisation. On this basis, in the second part of the article, concrete recommendations on priority topics within the professional development of foreign language teachers will be made, according to the specific educational potential of the German-Polish border region.

Opis:
One of the main purposes of learning foreign languages, particularly English, which has become lingua franca in many parts of the world, is the ability to communicate effectively with other users of the target language. Teaching to communicate in real, everyday situations is very often neglected and students have little chance to practise ordinary language in class. Therefore, teachers ought to provide learners with opportunities to improve their speaking skills. The prime objective of this diploma paper is to investigate whether role-play activities contribute to developing students’ speaking skills in the ELT classroom. This thesis consists of three chapters; the first two sections deal with a theoretical background and the third one focuses on implementing role-play activities in the classroom.

Opis:
Drama is an art form, a practical activity, and an intellectual discipline highly accessible to young people. In education, it is a mode of learning that challenges students to make meaning of their world. Through students’ active identification with imagined roles and situations in drama, they can learn to explore issues, events and relationships. In drama students draw on their knowledge and experience of the real world. Drama has the capacity to move and change both participants and audiences and to affirm and challenge values, cultures and identities Drama can develop students’ artistic and creative skills and humanize learning by providing lifelike learning contexts in a classroom setting that values active participation in a non-threatening, supportive environment. Drama empowers students to understand and influence their world through exploring roles and situations and develops students’ non-verbal and verbal, individual and group communication skills. It develops students’ intellectual, social, physical, emotional and moral domains through learning that engages their thoughts, feelings, bodies and actions. In the paper I will demonstrate process drama and how it may be used as a creative medium of teaching English as a foreign language.

Opis:
Non-typical letter activities and their effectiveness in foreign language lessons – EFL secondary school students’ perceptions The main aim of this article is to verify the effectiveness of non-typical lesson activities, involving the completion of a letter, in classroom conditions; and in implementing modern approaches to foreign language learning and teaching. Apart from presenting theoretical information on the notion of a letter and the concept of effectiveness in language education, the following account also provides insight into letter-based practical activities and identifies some consequences of their application in EFL classes. It delineates the opinions of secondary school students who, in an anonymous questionnaire, expressed their views on the letter activities offered to them in their lessons. Their opinions provide evidence in support of the content and concepts distinguished and discussed in the theoretical part of this paper.
