Opis:
For more than decade, the financial industry has experienced a continuous evolution in service delivery due to digitalization. Financial technology, commonly called FinTech, is now a highly used buzzword. FinTech brings about a new paradigm in which enterprises use modern technology to create innovations in the financial sector. This phenomenon, although widely discussed in modern literature, has many gaps in research. These special shortages are apparent in terms of its correct understanding. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to summarize FinTech in terms of definition, history and taxonomy. In the field of reviewing results, publishing and reporting results, as well as the results of the biggest consulting companies, a preview of various authors related to FinTech definitions was made. In addition, the stages of its development were grouped and discussed as well as criteria for types of FinTech phenomena were described. This is a review article.
Od ponad dekady sektor finansowy doświadcza nieustannej ewolucji w zakresie usług z powodu digitalizacji. Technologia finansowa, potocznie nazywana FinTech, coraz bardziej zyskuje na znaczeniu. FinTech wprowadza nowy paradygmat, w którym przedsiębiorstwa przy wykorzystaniu nowoczesnej technologii kreują innowacje w sektorze finansowym. Zjawisko FinTech, choć szeroko dyskutowane we współczesnej literaturze, posiada wiele luk badawczych.

Opis:
Theoretical background: Contemporary financial systems have been going through a period of dynamic changes since the beginning of this century. A special role in this process is played by technological innovations, especially the process of digitalization of financial systems, which resulted in the development of FinTech lenders. These entities are active in various segments of the financial services market, including the area of consumer loans (FinTech lenders). The conducted research confirms the dynamic development of FinTech lending activity worldwide and indicates the leading position of Poland among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in terms of the volume of digital lending. A review of the source literature shows a small number of scientific studies devoted to identifying the reasons underlying the growing interest of consumers in the offer of FinTech lenders. The perceived research gap became the motivation to undertake research addressing this topic in relation to the Polish market of non-banking digital loan services. Purpose of the article: Determining the place and importance of trust and personal innovativeness for consumers’ decisions to use digital loan services offered by FinTech lenders in Poland. Research methods: Critical analysis of the source literature, descriptive and comparative analysis, diagnostic survey as well as simple statistical methods, i.e. analysis of the structure or Kendall’s Tau correlation analysis. The empirical data were collected in May 2022 using the CAWI (computer-assisted web interview) method. The research sample was representative and included 1,000 representatives of Polish population. Main findings: Among the factors determining the adoption decisions of FinTech lenders’ clients, two groups of constructs can be distinguished. The first one consists of classic prerequisites (e.g. perceived ease of use [PEU], perceived usefulness [PU]), identified for a wide range of entities offering financial services based on information technologies. The second group consists of the factors attributed mainly to FinTech lenders, among which the leading position is taken by expressed trust (T) and personal innovativeness (PI). The analyzes carried out in the article confirmed that the expressed trust and personal innovativeness represent the statistically significant factors influencing the decisions made by Poles related to using digital loan services offered by FinTech lenders. The influence of these constructs on the adopted attitudes is a function of their mutual relationship, based on the reciprocal reinforcement of these factors. The conducted research also resulted in developing the economic and demographic profile of a person using the services of FinTech lenders. It is a man, aged 25–34, a university graduate earning an income exceeding PLN 5,000 and residing in a city populated by over 500,000 residents.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to identify the relationship between the level of regulation of various segments of the FinTech industry and the level of development of this sector. To address this research problem, the paper analyses the scope of regulation in 14 segments of the FinTech sector, and based on that, develops the FinTech Regulation Index for the individual European Union countries. Then, the paper uses this index to examine if there is a relationship between the level of regulation and the level of FinTech development in the various European Union countries. The econometric analysis confirmed the initial hypothesis that there is a significant relationship between the level of FinTech sector regulation and the level of its development.

Companies from the innovative technologies sector implement their solutions on the financial market. Their dynamic development is, amongst other things, caused both a loss of trust in traditional financial market entities and a change in consumer preferences related to the increasing use of financial services through electronic banking, specifically mobile banking. These trends, as well as legal regulations (e.g. the PSD2 Directive), and also the possibility of obtaining banking licenses by FinTech, have led to revolutionary changes on the financial markets. This is why there is a great challenge for central banks in the regulation and constant monitoring of entities from the FinTech sector that provide financial services. In connection with these changes, a survey was conducted among central banks asking them for opinions on the FinTech sector. As part of the research, numerous opinions were obtained which according to central banks indicate, among others, on: • the positive impact of the FinTech sector on the banking market • the need for cooperation between the banks and the FinTech sector, rather than establish competition • the specific analysis of cybernetic risk as a threat due to the growing scale of FinTech’s operations

Opis:
As businesses are actively incorporating technology as means of cost reduction and service provision, financial institutions have lately been one of the most active institutions in utilising information technology (IT) to their advantage. Although technology presented financial institutions with many opportunities and opened the door for a new hybrid sector to be formed, this came with its share of disadvantages one of which revolves around cyber security. Combined with the complex nature of products and services offered online through non-traditional financial institutions, this meant that adjusting the regulatory framework governing such products, services and institutions has now become a must. Since the current regulatory framework applicable on online banking does not differ much from that applied on bricks-and-mortar ones especially in terms of money laundering and deposit protection schemes, this paper recommends a hybrid, tech-centred, regulatory framework that is specifically designed to cater for financial institutions in order to offer users of these platforms higher levels of protection and suggests the creation of a joint regulatory and supervisory body that oversees and regulates activities of FinTechs. Such change should take into consideration the higher risk factor associated with online banking and the nature of service provision. The paper in its unique approach aims to inspire and influence change to further enhance customer protection and service provision of online banks.

The current area of consumers in the banking sector is increasingly narrowed down to telecommunications solutions with particular emphasis on online banking and various types of smartphone applications used for communication with their own bank. Developing in recent years has greatly contributed to the development of the "fintech" subsector. Technological finance is now an inseparable element of modern banking. Fintech enterprises dealing with innovations in the field of banking are very often co-operators of traditional banks, providing them with world-class telecommunications solutions as is the case in Poland.

The purpose of the article/hypothesis. This article aims to introduce the concept of creative destruction in relation to transformative solutions in finance based on the example of FinTech and innovative technologies with special emphasis on blockchain and cloud computing. As a means to reach its objective this paper analyzes in depth the concept of creative destruction originated by Schumpeter in 1940s and translates it to modern business financial environment to present the reader with double-sided effects of introduced changes, their unique and unprecedented character both from the perspective of FinTech and traditional financials intermediares. Methodology. In order to research the effects of innovations on the financial markets the critical study of the foreign literature will be conducted. Results of the research. The conducted considerations displayed a parallel between innovations introduced by FinTech and actions undertaken by traditional financial institutions in order to remain strong players on the financial market. Even though solutions provided by start-ups may debilitate gained trust, which is one of the fundamental cores of finance, and raise questions related to breach of established regulations, they support the market with increased efficiency and variability of products and services. However, it can be easily perceived that advantages of introduced solutions outweigh possible dangers, and financial intermediaries, especially banks, decide to operate on the basis of the engagament model that supposes a synergy with start-up to blend favourable aspects of both of them including banks’ well-established repute and trust along with FinTech’s innovative potential.

Opis:
Research background: Traditional financial institutions are facing new competitors - FinTech lenders. The development of these entities and their services depends on many factors, including the level of their acceptance and use by potential and/or current customers. This acceptance determines the ability to create desired financial results and defines the set of FinTech lenders' activities and also their environment aimed at shaping the offer which meets their consumers' expectations. The limited number of studies addressing the identification and assessment of the impact exerted by the adoption factors of lending services offered by FinTech lenders and the lack of such analyzes relating to these decisions made by consumers from Central and Eastern Europe argue for the need to conduct such research. Purpose of the article: Identify factors driving consumers' adoption of digital lending services offered by FinTech lenders in Poland. Methods: Critical analysis of the source literature, descriptive and comparative analysis, diagnostic survey, econometric methods (PCA, SEM used in the TAM). Empirical data come from the surveys carried out in May 2022 using the CAWI method and covering a representative sample of 1,000 Poles. Findings & value added: The study identified factors driving consumers' adoption of digital lending services, including perceived trust, risk, usefulness and financial health. It has been proven that the perceived ease of use and innovation do not represent the statistically significant constructs influencing the accepted adoption attitudes. The adopted research model shows a considerable power to explain the intention of using digital loans. The article is the first scientific study of this type discussing the identification of adoption factors for loan services offered by FinTech lenders operating on the Central and Eastern European market. The presented example of Poland being the leader in this dynamically developing market provides the background for conducting international comparative studies in the future.

Research background: According to the World Bank (2020), about 60% of adults in developing countries do not use formal financial services. Furthermore, according to the Polish Association of Loan Institutions (2022), about 3 million Poles use loans, most of them obtained online. Among the reasons for more than a decade of growth of interest in the non-bank consumer lending market there are the development of modern technology applications in finance and the establishment of the Lendtech sector. Purpose of the article: The main goal of the paper is to verify the role played by the Lendtech (LT) sector in the consumer credit market in the context of household financial exclusion. The following research questions were asked: Do credit-excluded households take advantage of LT services and, if so, to what extent? What are the behaviours and preferences of those who use consumer credit offered by LT? Do socio-demographic characteristics determine consumer use of loans offered by LT and, if so, what are they? Is the use of loans offered by LT due to credit exclusion or other factors? What action should be taken by participants in the digital consumer loan market interested in its inclusive direction? Methods: The paper uses the following methods: critical analysis of the literature, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney test, and nonparametric regression algorithm: k-nearest neighbors, as well as inductive inference methods. The data used is primary in nature and comes from a nationwide survey, September 2022 (CAWI method) of 1,200 Poles, of whom 200 respondents are Lendtech customers. The quota selection applied made it possible to reflect characteristics corresponding to the population of customers of lending institutions registered in BIK databases. Findings & value added: The article is a pioneering study based on an independent scientific survey, devoted to the Polish LT services market considered in terms of its relationship with one of the types of financial exclusion: credit exclusion. The most important conclusion is that people at risk of credit exclusion find a financing substitute in the LT sector, and thus it plays an important role in reducing financial exclusion, while maintaining the principle of creditworthiness verification.

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to present both theoretical and practical basis for development of payment services in Poland and in the whole world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over this time there was a sharp rise in e-commerce along with a fast growth of the number of consumers making online payments. This resulted in changes in adoption of new technologies and payment services. Apart from those which were the consequence of quickening the pace of change in the consumers’ behavior, a crucial role, especially in developing countries, was played by local regulators, who somehow forced financial institutions to create new solutions, which fintech readily made good use of. In numerous countries it fostered radical and groundbreaking quickening of the pace of shifting to electronic payments and creating a new sort of payment services, adjusted to the needs and expectations of younger consumers. Methodology: The paper uses the method of an economic analysis and literature review - mostly electronic sources, descriptive and comparative analyses. Findings: From customers’ perspective, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on development of new payment services should be acknowledged as positive, or even groundbreaking in some developing countries. Over the years 2020-2021 the number of customers making on-line payments, especially mobile payments, grew rapidly. This was the result of a fast, forced by pandemic, growth in sales in e-commerce. Consequently, it enabled to introduce and widely promote new financial services - based on open banking, and promoting solutions targeted at young consumers, e.g. deferred payments. Even though the pandemic is over, the interest rate rise and the consequences of the war in Ukraine are bound to bring further, dynamic development of such payment services, as well as their popularization on more and more new markets all over the world. Practical implications: The analysis of relations between theoretical and practical bases of widespread adoption of new solutions concerning on-line payments in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic is an important factor in the development of e-commerce market and financial services. The fact that digital forms of payments have become very common brought about the network effect, a situation when the value for the customer depends on the number of users of a particular solution. Due to that, poorer, developing countries could, making use of the solutions based on open banking and the technology provided by fintech, quickly popularize cashless, and electronic payments. Only a few years ago it was estimated that in the countries lacking the standard payment infrastructure it would take decades to reach this level. Also, in developed countries the pandemic contributed to popularization among young consumers of solutions adapted to their preferences, being an alternative to traditional credit cards. Deferred payments are a solution which is commonly used in e-commerce, and their main merits include increasing both conversion rates and average order value. However, it needs to be emphasized that this goes with a less flexible business model of the companies providing such services in high interest rate environment, as well as adverse consequences of broad access to such services. Many countries have observed a growth of customer debt - which effects both credit worthiness and problems to pay off rising debts. This results in imposing formal regulations on deferred payments markets more and more frequently.

Most commonly crowdfunding (peer-to-peer and peer-to-business lending in particular) is classified as a new phenomenon in financial market, which come within the equally new aggregates of ‘sharing economy’ and/or ‘disruptive innovation’ and/or ‘FinTech’. More rarely it is presented as an example of ongoing process of disintermediation – disposal of a middleman between lenders and borrowers. This article is an attempt to substantiate several theses: (i) that primary financial instruments issued by debt-based crowdfunding platforms, bearing strong resemblance used in Islamic banking Mudaraba and Musharaka contracts, is nothing new in the world of finance; (ii) that more sophisticated instruments, created by crowdfunding platforms, give grounds to qualify this business model as a component of shadow banking; (iii) that contrary to the popular statement that ‘peer-to-peer lending cuts the institutional “middleman” and reduce costs, in reality crowdfunding platforms do not provide any sizeable reduction of borrowing costs and, per contra, contribute to the strengthening and expansion of the banking system.

The main research goal set in the article was to consider the reasons for the intensive development of the FinTech sector and the classification the BigTech sector − which may pose a greater threat to traditional financial institutions than the activities of FinTech companies. Surveys conducted among FinTech companies show that they have a positive impact on the financial market, leading, among others to the better adaptation of financial products and services to the needs of consumers. Companies from the FinTech sector increasingly cooperate with banks in the field of implementing financial innovations. Therefore, the financial products and services offered are relatively cheaper and delivered to consumers faster − especially during the period of progressing digitization of the financial market. FinTech companies note that consumers are attached to traditional financial institutions that have the status of public trust institutions and are characterized by a high level of reputation and stability.
Cele badawcze artykułu stanowiły ocena przyczyn intensywnego rozwoju sektora FinTech oraz próba zdefiniowania sektora BigTech, który może stanowić większe zagrożenie dla tradycyjnych instytucji finansowych aniżeli działalność spółek FinTech. Z badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród spółek FinTech wynika, że mają one pozytywny wpływ na rynek finansowy, prowadząc m.in. do lepszego dostosowania produktów i usług finansowych do potrzeb konsumentów. Spółki z sektora FinTech coraz częściej współpracują z bankami we wdrażaniu innowacji finansowych.

The lack of a legal framework did not prevent Ukraine from ranking third among the world leaders in the use of cryptocurrencies in 2022. In terms of the sum of indicators, Ukraine is ahead of such tech giants as the United States (5th place), China (10th place), and the United Kingdom (17th place). The purpose of the study is to identify the underlying principles for the introduction of a new legal definition of “digital things” and “digital content” and their prospects for use, which are laid down in draft laws No. 6447 and No. 6576, as initiatives that are satellites to the relevant law on virtual assets. As a reminder, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted the Law of Ukraine “On Virtual Assets” No. 2074-IX on February 17, 2022. Since the adoption of Law 2074 by the Parliament of Ukraine on February 17, 2022 and until the period of 2023, significant events have taken place. They have significantly affected the plans of the Parliament of Ukraine to launch mandatory amendments to the Tax Code of Ukraine provided for in the Draft Law 7150 and simultaneously enact Law 2074 from October 1, 2022. The study was based on the analysis of the legislative framework of Ukraine, the European Union and other international acts, including those ratified by the Parliament of Ukraine. The study has led to a number of conclusions. Draft Law No. 6447 introduces the definition of a “digital thing” that is in circulation only in digital form; these include virtual assets, digital content, online accounts, money and securities that exist exclusively in digital form. Its adoption will help potential consumers to protect their rights to digital content, online accounts, virtual assets, even money and securities that exist exclusively in digital form. Comparing the concepts of “digital thing” and “digital content” proposed by draft laws No. 6447 and No. 6576, we found signs of legal tautology in determining what is primary and what is secondary. The addition of the words “digital content” to Article 177 of the Civil Code and the expansion of the concept of a thing to “material and digital things” is at least more declarative.

The aim of the article is to show, from a dynamic perspective, the foundations of a model of competition occurring in the banking world between traditional financial institutions and fintechs. A dynamic two-sector model of competition is proposed with built-in feedback mechanisms in the form of demand side economies of scale. The model shows changes in market shares after a challenger enters a bank’s market with a portfolio of services as substitutes for the bank’s product offer. The traditional and new entities do not adjust the scope of their products over time, instead competing using those already available. The model obtained three economically significant steady states. Further analysis of the time path showed that the sector is heading towards an oligopolistic market structure in which both entities stabilize their market shares. However, in the event of low initial market penetration by traditional banks, a new innovative entity (a challenger bank) will completely dominate the sector, creating a monopolistic market structure.
Silna konkurencja ze strony fintechów ma ogromny wpływ na konkurencję na rynku usług bankowych. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie modelowych podstaw zachodzącej w świecie bankowości gry konkurencyjnej pomiędzy tradycyjnymi instytucjami finansowymi a fintechami w ujęciu dynamicznym. Zaproponowano dynamiczny dwusektorowy model konkurencji z wbudowanymi mechanizmami sprzężeń zwrotnych w postaci popytowych korzyści skali. W modelu uzyskano trzy sensowne ekonomicznie stany stacjonarne. Dalsza analiza ścieżki czasowej pokazała, że gałąź dąży do oligopolistycznej struktury rynkowej, w której oba podmioty ustabilizują swoje udziały w rynku. W przypadku jednak niskiej początkowej penetracji rynku przez banki tradycyjne nowy innowacyjny podmiot (challenger bank) całkowicie zdominuje gałąź, tworząc monopolistyczną strukturę rynkową.
