Opis:
Although the specifications for Japanese highway bridges are currently under revision in the format of performance-based design, the degree of safety of the designed bridges is not easy to understand. Thus, this paper attempts to disclose the safety and the underlying reliability indices of roadway bridges designed in accordance with the Japanese Specifications for Highway Bridges in the light of a proposal of general principles for the limit state design. The reliability indices and the probability of failure are numerically evaluated assuming the Normal distributions both for the resistance and for the load effect based on the Advanced First-order Second-Moment Method focusing on the relationship between the probability of failure and the factor of safety. Further special reference is made regarding tsunami breakwaters in view of a low frequency but high consequence damages by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. It was found from the comparison that great discrepancy of the design philosophy and thus the factor of safety exists between the designs of bridges and breakwaters.
W prezentowanej pracy przedstawiono próbę przybliżenia zagadnienia bezpieczeństwa i wskaźników niezawodności dla mostów projektowanych zgodnie z wytycznymi ujętymi w Japońskich Specyfikacjach Dla Mostów Drogowych.

The paper deals with the assessment of slope stability on the road II / 595 near the village Zlatno. The assessment of slope stability was made before and after the landslide caused by floods in 2010. For proposal for a comprehensive assessment and possible remedial action is necessary to know the geological conditions and choose the appropriate method to assess slope stability. The calculation of factor of safety was made using GEO 5 software. The critical factors of safety have been determined by Petterson, Bishop and Sarma Methods. We analyzed possibilities to using these methods for assessment of slope stability. The Sarma Method is more appropriate for this calculation.

Opis:
The paper deals with reliability analysis of square footing on soil with strength anisotropy. The strength of the soil has been described with identified anisotropic strength criterion dedicated to geomaterials with layered microstructure. The analysis assumes dip angle α and azimuth angle β which define direction of lamination of the structure to be random variables with given probability density functions. Bearing capacity being a function of these variables is approximated based on results of deterministic simulations obtained for variety of orientations. The weighted regression method by Kaymaz and McMahon within the framework of Response Surface Method is used for the approximation. As a result of analysis, global factor of safety that corresponds to assumed value of probability of failure is determined. The value of the safety factor denotes the ratio between the value of the design load and the mean value of bearing capacity which is needed to reduce the probability of failure to the acceptable level. The procedure of calculating the factor has been presented for two different cases. In the first case, no information about lamination direction of the soil has been provided and thus all the orientations are assumed to be equally probable (uniform distribution). In the second case, statistical information including mean, variance and assumed probability distribution for both α and β angle is known. For the latter case, using results obtained for few different values of mean of angle α, also the influence of strength anisotropy on the value of global factor of safety is shown.

Opis:
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the slope stability condition by using fuzzy estimation method based on fuzzy possibility theory. Due to use of this theory, the inaccuracy, ambiguity and uncertainty in input parameters are considered and therefore, the calculated factor of safety (FOS) is highly reliable. In this research, first, the input parameters of slope stability analysis, based on statistical characteristics and grade of membership concept, as a fuzzy numbers are defined. Then the performance function of slope behavior is defined and by using the fuzzy parameters, the FOS is calculated. In next step, by using the several α - cut, the calculated FOS is defined as a fuzzy form and subsequently, the slope stability condition based on fuzzy presentation of FOS is evaluated. The results show that, although based on deterministic analysis the studied slope is stable but based on fuzzy interpretation of FOS, the slope stability condition is scare. The fuzzy analysis of slope stability condition, by applying the uncertainty in calculating the FOS and defining the grade of membership for each unknown input parameters in model, a more realistic interpretation of slope stability condition is provided. In addition, the fuzzy presentation of the FOS, allowing more accurate judgments about slope stability condition.
W pierwszym etapie pracy zdefiniowano parametry wejściowe do analizy stabilności skarpy w oparciu o charakterystyki statystyczne i przyjęte funkcje przynależności, i określone parametry rozmyte. Następnie zdefiniowano zachowanie zbocza skarpy w oparciu o parametry rozmyte i obliczono współczynnik bezpieczeństwa.

The Kingdom of Bhutan is located in the eastern Himalayas approximately between latitudes 26° 41’52” N to 28° 14’ 52” N and longitudes 88° 44’ 54” E to 92° 41’ 7” E. The 38,686 square kilometers of landlocked and isolated mountain country has elevations ranging from about 160 meters in the southern part to more than 7500 meters in the northern part. People habituating along the steep slope valleys with river flowing at the foot of gorges are the finest epitome of exquisite scenery for outside world. However, such slopes particularly the unstable and loose ones pose greatest threat to the mankind and the development of the country. The complex arrangement of topography, constant tectonic movement and others human induced activities accelerate the landslide which are already active. The landslide problems in Bhutan dates back to 1960s when first road construction took place in the country. Every monsoon season is marked with countless landslide across the country, among which the landslide between Phuntsholing to Thimphu highway is the most frequent and disparaging. Many people lose their valuables and lives during the summer season every year due to landslides and falling stones on the highway. This research will help in bettering the knowledge in landslides and also combating it with necessary means. The main objective of this study is to comprehend the activating processes and mechanism of the landslide as well as examine to predict the possibility of another landslide by seeking natural causes and anthropogenic factors.

Numerical modeling is an important tool to estimate slope stability. This publication shows application of a GEO 5 – slope stability software to evaluate stability of the “Łaski” Landslide in Międzybrodzie Bialskie. The slide surfaces, which were indentified in drill cores, were used to compute factors of safety (FS). The data from inclinometric measurements were used to verify the numerical model of the landslide. Calculations were carried out for three scenarios: first with normal water level, second scenario with lowered water level of 5 m and 10 m and the third scenario without water with the worst courses of sliding surfaces. As the result for each scenario the factors of safety were estimated. It was found that despite of water lowering and stabilization of existed surfaces, there is a considerable risk of a new sliding surfaces occurrence.

This paper discusses the design analysis of closed vessel (CV) for power cartridge application in water-jet disruptor. In this article, various design theories are presented in which the vessel is subjected to internal pressure. CV is a kind of pressure vessel utilized to evaluate the performance of power cartridge used for water-jet application. It is a test vessel which generates pressure - time profile by burning the propellant. Energy derived from burning of the propellant of power cartridge aids in neutralizing Improvised Devices (IED's). This energy creates high water-jet plume in the disruptor. In order to evaluate various performance parameters of the cartridge, CV design plays a vital role in the research and development activities, including, development, life trials, production, lot proof trials and life extension / life revision trials. CV is one of the methodologies / techniques from which energy generated is measured in terms of the maximum pressure (Pmax) and the time to maximum pressure (TPmax). This paper also discusses about various design aspects using the finite element method (FEM) and their comparative results with different design theories. In the light of these theoretical, numerical, and experimental works, it was recommended that octahedral stress theory or van Mises theory should be used for vessel design. This satisfies the designer requirements. FEM analysis tool helps in reducing time & development cost.

Opis:
The regulated maximum peak particle velocity (PPV) from blasting operations of an open-pit coal mine is less than 2 mm/s to prevent mainly any public disturbance such as ground vibration and air blast. However, the blast-induce ground vibration can also decrease the stability of pit slope, which has not been intensively studied. A claystone pit wall, which is geotechnically investigated as having a plane failure type and the natural condition factor of safety (FS), has been selected for this study. The FS is selected to measure the effect of blast-induced ground vibration on the slope stability. The limit equilibrium, pseudo-static 1 (), and pseudo-static 2 () methods are used to determine the FS. The vibration results of blasting monitored at three slope positions: crest, middle, and toe, from two areas at the same pit wall, are recorded by blasting seismographs. Maximum charge weight per delay and the distance from blast areas to seismographs are collected to construct the scaled distance. The percentage change of FS of three methods from both areas compared to natural condition FS are all less than 4 percent considered that the slope stability is safe from blasting vibration (less than 15 percent). The relationship between the FS and maximum PPV from the limit equilibrium, pseudo-static 1 (), and pseudo-static 2 () methods indicate that the adverse maximum PPVs given the unity FS are 16.60 and 4.58, and 4.74 mm/s, respectively. The regulated PPV less than 2 mm/s at the mine is reasonable to prevent any possible plane failure. However, many impact parameters have not been included in this study, and their effects may disturb the pit wall stability.
Regulowana maksymalna szczytowa prędkość cząstek (PPV) z operacji wybuchowych w kopalni odkrywkowej wynosi mniej niż 2 mm / s, aby zapobiec głównie wszelkim zakłóceniom społecznym, takim jak wibracje gruntu i podmuch powietrza.

Opis:
Purpose: Application of deep neural networks (DNN) and ensemble of ANN with bagging for estimating of factor of safety (FOS) of soil stability with a comparative performance analysis done for all techniques. Design/methodology/approach: 1000 cases with different geotechnical and similar Geometrical properties were collected and analysed using the Limit Equilibrium based Morgenstern-Price Method with input variables as the strength parameters of the soil layers, i.e., Su (Upper Clay), Su (Lower Clay), Su (Peat), angle of internal friction (φ), Su (Embankment) with the factor of safety (FOS) as output. The evaluation and comparison of the performance of predicted models with cross-validation having ten folds were made based on correlation-coefficient (CC), Nash-Sutcliffe-model efficiency-coefficient (NSE), root-mean-square-error (RMSE), mean-absolute-error (MAE) and scattering-index (S.I.). Sensitivity analysis was conducted for the effects of input variables on FOS of soil stability based on their importance. Findings: The results showed that these techniques have great capability and reflect that the proposed model by DNN can enhance performance of the model, surpassing ensemble in prediction. The Sensitivity analysis outcome demonstrated that Su (Lower Clay) significantly affected the factor of safety (FOS), trailed by Su (Peat). Research limitations/implications: This paper sets sight on use of deep neural network (DNN) and ensemble of ANN with bagging for estimating of factor of safety (FOS) of soil stability. The current approach helps to understand the tangled relationship of various inputs to estimate the factor of safety of soil stability using DNN and ensemble of ANN with bagging. Practical implications: A dependable prediction tool is provided, which suggests that model can help scientists and engineers optimise FOS of soil stability. Originality/value: Recently, DNN and ensemble of ANN with bagging have been used in various civil engineering problems as reported by several studies and has also been observed to be outperforming the current prevalent modelling techniques. DNN can signify extremely changing and intricate high-dimensional functions in correlation to conventional neural networks. But on a detailed literature review, the application of these techniques to estimate factor of safety of soil stability has not been observed.

Research background: Despite a dynamically growing exploration of broadly understood employee participation, there is still space left for more in-depth or new analyses in this area, and occupational health and safety (OHS) serves as a good example in this respect. In empirical studies, employee participation in the field of occupational health and safety is not treated as a separate element of ensuring safety in the organisation, but only as a minor element of occupational health and safety management, or as just one of the elements building a safety culture. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to propose a synthetic measure of active employee participation in OHS taking into account the depth and scope of this participation. A comparative analysis of the level of active participation of OHS at medical facilities and in other sectors of the economy was also performed. Methods: The theoretical model for active employee participation in OHS was tested by means of a survey using the PAPI (Paper & Pen Personal Interview) method. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used. The developed construct (characterised by an adequately high level of validity and reliability) was used in a comparative analysis of medical institutions with other sectors of the economy with the use of the Mann?Whitney U test. Findings & value added: This research fills the theoretical gap in the model approach to participation in OHS. It has been found (EFA and CFA analyses) that active employee participation in OHS consists of one dimension (15 items). The model for active employee participation in OHS and the universal measurement scale developed and validated in this study represent a step forward towards the effective and reliable measurement of employee participation. In addition, the research has shown that the level of active employee participation in OHS at medical facilities is lower than in other sectors of the economy. The added value of this paper results from the approach to measuring employee participation in OHS which takes into account the depth and scope of this participation. The tool is consistent with international regulations and standards in the field of OHS, and thus can be used in other countries to assess active employee participation in OHS, regardless of the size and profile of the company or the sector of the economy.

Opis:
Over the past generation, the ISM code has brought forth tremendous opportunities to investigate and enhance the human factor in shipping through the implementation of Safety Management Systems. One of the critical factors to this implementation has been mandatory compliance and a requirement for obtaining a Document of Compliance (DOC) for vessels operating globally or at least internationally. A primary objective of these systems is to maintain them as “living” or “dynamic” systems that are always evolving. As the ISM code has evolved, there have been instances where large organizations have opted to maintain a voluntary DOC from their respective class society. This has been accomplished with a large human factor element as typically an organizational culture does not always accept change readily especially if there is not a legal requirement to do so. In other words, when considering maritime training is it possible that organizations may represent cultural challenges? The intent of this paper will be to research large maritime operations that have opted for a document of compliance voluntarily and compare them to similar organizations that have been mandated by international law to do the same. The result should be to gain insight into the human factors that must contribute to a culture change in the organization for the purposes of a legal requirement versus the human factors that contribute to a voluntary establishment of a safety management system. This analysis will include both the executive decision making that designs a system implementation and the operational sector that must execute its implementation. All success and failures of education and training can be determined by the outcome. Did the training achieve its goal? Or has the education prepared the students to embrace a new idea in conjunction with a company goal or a new regulatory scheme? In qualifying the goal of a successful ISM integration by examining both mandatory and voluntary ISM implementation in large maritime operations, specifically ferry systems, hopefully we can learn from the various factors that have gone into each.

Opis:
Cold-formed thin-walled sections are prone to local buckling caused by residual stresses, geometrical imperfections and inconsistency of material properties. We present a real case of buckling failure and conduct a numerical and experimental study aimed to identify methods capable of predicting such failures. It is important because designers of structures are getting more FEA-oriented and tend to avoid lengthy procedures of cold-formed structures design. Currently adopted methods are complicated and require patience and caution from a designer which is reasonable in case of the most important structural members but not necessarily so in ordinary design. Since it is important, we offer an insight into several FEA and manual methods which were sufficient to predict the failure while remaining fairly simple. Using a non-uniform partial safety factor was still necessary. We hope that this paper will be of interest for people performing a lot of routine analyses and worrying about reliability of their computations.

Opis:
The question of the overburden rock dump formation during the development of iron ore deposits of Ukraine was considered. An analysis of the technology of forming a high single-tier dump in an abandoned deep pit was carried out. Two technology options are considered: loading rock on the slope of high single-tier dump and on its edge. The influence of the dependence of the loading rock on the edge of high single-tier dump on its stability of a has been established. The nature of the change in the width of the possible landslide prism, the safe distance of the dragline location has been established. The prospects for the formation of a high single-tier dump in the regime of controlled deformations are substantiated. For high single-tier dump the ordinary method of slices was justified and used to calculate the safety factor. Recommendations on the use of draglines available in Ukraine for forming the high single-tier dumps of overburden rock have been issued.
