Opis:
The existence of inrush current poses a significant problem during the start-up process within three-phase voltage-source rectifiers. To address this problem, this study proposes a strategy to suppress the inrush current effectively based on the virtual-resistorcontrol method, while preventing the increase in cost of the system and complexity of the algorithm. First, a mathematical model is established based on the dq coordinate frame, and the primary cause of the inrush current is analyzed. Then, the design process of the virtual-resistor-control method is detailed. Finally, the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by simulations and experiments. The results show that the inrush current can be more than two times the rated current before the addition of the virtual resistor. The start-up process can be realized without the inrush current after the addition of the virtual resistor, it does not need to increase hardware costs, there is no secondary inrush current, and the sensitivity of the parameters and the complexity of control are low

Opis:
Marine abandonment immersion suits are a vital piece of safety equipment intended to protect individuals from exposure to harsh environmental elements. The operational effectiveness of a well maintained and fitted suit depends on the ability of a user to correctly don a suit system. Thirty-two participants performed immersion suit donning trials in six experimental conditions. Dynamic, pre-abandonment marine emergency scenarios were simulated using a six degrees of freedom motion platform and varying environmental lighting levels. This article details user-suit interaction challenges encountered throughout immersion suit donning tasks and examines their connection to safety and survival in marine emergencies. Analysis of user-suit functionality during the donning process is critical for identifying current deficiencies in order to develop future design solutions, training methodologies and ultimately improve users’ practical competencies.

In the article, a brief overview of the measures taken in order to improve the safety of the crews and vehicles is presented. A few examples have been shown. The analysis of the attacks impact on the vehicles was performed on the basis of Polish Military Contingents in Iraq and Afghanistan, In addition, the determinants of endangering of the crews are presented and the resolutions that were undertaken are discussed. It should be noted, that in today's armed conflicts, the safety of the soldiers pursuing combat jobs is a priority. Therefore, the most important issue is to meet the requirements for vehicles security levels. An appropriate vehicle protection level should be taken into account during the determination of the technical assumptions and in the next step verified while the prototype testing in research and development centres. It is assessed that the use of various systems and means of vehicle protection in the new 20 the century have been inspired by operations carried out in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the classics faced the new unpredictable form of combat. However, is unconventional, asymmetric war something new? This is a typical guerrilla war run by the other side by means available for them. It seems that the coalition was not prepared for that form of operations in many regards.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to present the adaptation and implementation of the recommendations of the National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo – INSHT) in the authors’ hospital to achieve a safer handling of hazardous drugs.Material and MethodsIn 2016, INSHT published the first document on hazardous drugs in Spain. In the authors’ center, a project was developed to implement the recommendations presented in that document in 2 phases: 1) analysis: to identify drugs and processes susceptible to not being handled as hazardous, and to search for safer alternatives and preventive measures; and 2) development: to ensure information, training, the adaptation of standardized work procedures, the minimization of risks associated with handling, safety devices, personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as health monitoring.ResultsThe authors detected 80 commercial presentations manipulated without adhering to safety conditions, mainly oral (74%) from lists 1 (7.5%), 2 (37.5%) and 3 (55%) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The following measures were envisaged to reduce the risk: introducing new presentations (4 lower doses, 1 liquid dose) and centralizing new preparations in the pharmacy service (11 oral formulas, 6 parenteral drugs). Management, spillage and exposure procedures were adapted. Safety measures were included in the prescription and administration applications, and there were some indications of risks in the storage. Overall, 48 referents and 690 nurses were trained. Each unit was provided with PPE and safety devices (e.g., closed systems, RX CRUSH®). The steps prior to the administration were moved to the patient’s bedside to align patient and professional safety. During the first 6 months after the implementation, 22 cases of pregnancy (64% among the nursing staff), 4 cases of lactation, and 1 case of conceiving problems were reported. In the cases of oxytocin and the repackaging of list 3, risk management was applied.ConclusionsThe multidisciplinary approach has allowed to achieve a global and safer control of hazardous drugs with a minimal impact on the center. It is important to continuously evaluate the effects of these measures, and to take into account the data of this analysis and any possible new evidence.

The trends to build ever larger passenger vessels enforce the necessity of continuous improvement of safety systems on such ships. Sea voyages constitute nowadays an attractive form of spending one’s leisure, which is why people aboard vessels should also have their safety ensured in the case of a necessity to evacuate them. Paper presents the methods of lengthening of the time available for conducting evacuation, shortening the time of becoming aware of the necessity of evacuation and shortening the time of evacuation itself. An interesting concept of signalling the direction of evacuation by means of sound, bound strictly with the way man’s instrument of hearing functions and the way of locating the source of sound is also presented at the paper. A new approach to designing evacuation systems is discussed at the paper. The concept of a “safe haven” is presented.

Opis:
One of the challenges in modern rescue are terrorist attacks in which use is made of chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear (CBRN) agents. The mass nature of such incidents causes participation in the operations of various services. The first stage of responding to CBRN incidents is often attended by several hundred rescuers. Important factor influencing the speed and effectiveness of actions thus increasing the safety of rescuers is the appropriate selection and optimization of personal protective equipment (PPE). Although the discussion on the selection of PPE during CBRN incidents has been going on for many years, the main emphasis is on solutions used by the military. There is much less work on PPE for rescuers who are usually the first line of defence. The variety of tasks performed by them and a multitude of factors determining the selection of PPE makes it difficult to find a unified approach to this problem. The aims of this paper consist of identification of factors that should be taken into account when selecting PPE for rescuers, reviewing the standards in this area and select the optimal PPE for rescuers during CBRN incidents based on the two the most realistic hazard scenarios. This study contains a critical review of literature and standards in the field of PPE for rescuers, includes outcomes from observation and may be a catalyst for a discussion of this problem.

Opis:
The probability of collisions with animals and their consequences depend on several factors, of which the speed and design of the train are very important. The problem of safety related to collisions concerns much more passenger trains than freight trains. Data obtained from carriers unambiguously indicate the growing scale of the problem – the number of incidents increases every year, as well as the related costs of rolling stock repairs, delays in train traffic, passenger confidence loss or costs of lowering the level of railway traffic safety. Collision maps made on the basis of these data should be a prelude to designing a system of preventive measures implemented in places with the highest risk. We should not wait with the introduction of preventive measures to a railway disaster. To protect sections of railway lines with an increased risk of collisions with animals the best available solution is the system of UOZ animal protection devices. This system, protecting both trains and animals from the effects of collisions, is still the most innovative and modern solution on a global scale. The growing interest of foreign railway authorities and our readiness to offer a state-of-the-art, proven system gives the opportunity to introduce the Polish invention to railway lines all around the world.
