Opis:
Introduction and objective. Psoriasis isa quite common, chronic and immune-mediated skin disorder. The prevalence of psoriasis differs in various countries, but it is said to affect 2% of the world’s population in general. Psoriasis has many different clinical features but all lesions have the same characteristic: erythema, thickening and scale, although other clinical features are also connected, such as psoriatic arthritis, obesity and metabolic syndrome. All of these may lead to conditions impairing the quality of life. This review is an attempt to summarize recent data regarding environmental factors, together with epigenetic markers and processes playing an important role in psoriasis. State of knowledge. Many different environmental factors play a role in genetically predisposed patients. This is causes epigenetic alternations which may be a linking part in the whole process. Many studies have indicated a connection between psoriasis and various genes and antigens. The presence of HLA-Cw6 is common as well a strong link between its presence and the onset of psoriasis being observed. The main alternations are DNA methylation, histone’s modifications and the role of microRNA. Excessive reaction is usually not present without a triggering factor. Environmental factors are mostly rated, such as drugs, life style and habits (smoking, alcohol), diet, physical trauma (skin injury provoking Koebner phenomenon), stress, microorganism and infections. Conclusions. The correlation between pathogenesis of psoriasis and environmental risk factors, together with epigenetic alternations still require more investigation. Education about diet habits, nutrition, weight loss and healthy lifestyle seems to be important during the treatment of psoriasis.

Opis:
The prevalence of bladder cancer (BCa) is 4 times higher in men as compared to women, and gender differences have been the focus of attention for few years. Androgen receptor (AR) may be a putative explanation for gender differences. It may also be related to unfavourable BCa progression and development because of the increased androgen sensitivity of urothelium to carcinogens. Moreover, cigarette smoking and occupational exposure to carcinogens have been reported to play contributory roles with the highest attributable risk of BCa. In this review, the authors attempt to summarize the seminal research works that synthesized current understanding of the central role of AR in the negative regulation of carcinogen detoxification activity in BCa. In particular, the authors discuss the regulatory effects of 3,3’-diindolylmethane on AR gene transcription through microRNA as its suggested effect on the prevention of BCa. Moreover, to show the still existing problem of occupational exposure and BCa incidence, the authors review recent studies in this area. Based on the rapidly accumulating scientific evidence, it seems pragmatic that androgen/AR-mediated interference in the detoxification mechanism may be inhibited by phytochemicals. Therefore, collectively, nutrition has a key role as gene–nutrient interactions are important contributors to BCa prevention, also through epigenetic modifications. Here, the authors have derived suggestions for future research. Med Pr. 2022;73(2):151–62

Opis:
The occurrence of both the blue and violet halites is one of the most interesting phenomena in nature. Despite numerous laboratory and field works, their origin in natural evaporitic environments has not been satisfactorily explained. In the Kłodawa Salt Dome (Zechstein, Central Po land), blue or vio let halites occur relatively frequently. Their accumulations differ in size and intensity of colours. In this paper, petrological features of anhydrite crystals derived from one of the largest outcrops of the blue halite at the Kłodawa Salt Mine are presented. Anhydrite is one of solid inclusions encountered in blue-coloured halite crystals. Special attention was paid to fluid inclusions present in this anhydrite. The microthermometric measurements showed two directions of homogenisation, i.e., towards the liquid phase (LG→L, LL→L) ortowards the gas phase (LG→G). In the former case, the temperatures ranged from 174 to 513°C, whereas in the latter one, the values from 224 to 385°C were measured. The composition of inclusions is relatively variable. We can observe transparent and opaque daughter minerals as well as CO2 in the liquid phase accompanied by a variable amount of methane or hydrogen sulphide. These features of inclusions indicate that anhydrite crystals and, thus, blue halite were formed under the influence of hydrothermal conditions. Observations in the mine workings combined with petrological studies enable to conclude that blue colouration of halite crystals is controlled by three factors: a high temperature, reducing conditions and defects in halite lattice related to tectonic stress.

Heavy metal contamination is a major environmental problem. A coordinated network of molecular processes participates in plant response to heavy metals. The metal-dependent gene expression is regulated on multiple levels and may include chromatin modifi cations. One of the methods which allows to understand the role of histone post-translational modifi cations in plant cell response to heavy metals may be chromatin immunoprecipitation.

Opis:
Scientific research has shown that during stress, the secretion of hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain, etc. is definitely stronger and longer lasting when persons are convinced that they cannot cope with the requirements of a stressful situation, i.e. they are in a state of uncontrolled stress. The main indicator of this condition is a long-term increase in the concentration of stress hormones in the blood. The higher the catecholamine concentration, the more DNA damage, the more cells undergoing tumour transformation, the larger the tumour and the more advanced the disease. Catecholamines also narrow blood vessels, which leads to an increase in VEGF expression, responsible for an increase in angiogenesis, and hence tumour growth and tumour metastasis. Cortisol contributes to inhibition of the immune system and changes in the central nervous system. Under uncontrolled stress, telomeres are shortened, which is another reason for shortening life expectancy. It has also been proven that stress and trauma are inherited in subsequent generations in the mechanism of epigenetic inheritance. Despite epigenetic predispositions to develop various malignancies, including ovarian, stomach and colorectal cancer, people can move from uncontrolled to controlled stress in a particular situation, even though the situation itself does not change. This is a breakthrough message. During cancer, the transition to controlled stress definitely supports therapy, increasing your chances of survival or even recovery. The most common condition for taking control of stress is to change your current lifestyle.

Opis:
A spectacular epigenetic silicification was encountered in the Oxfordian bedded limestones exposed in the Sokole Hills situated in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The main epigenetic mineral is microcrystalline quartz accompanied by minor goethite, hematite, barite, galena and sphalerite. Locally, the mineralized limestones reveal Pb and Cu contents exceeding over 150 times the background values of these metals in unmineralized limestones. The epigenetic mineralization of the bedded limestones was probably a two-stage process. During the first, Early Cretaceous stage, silicified limestones formed at the erosional surface of a denuded carbonate complex. Such silicification greatly limited the progress of the first karstification phase of the Upper Jurassic carbonates initiated in the Hauterivian. The sources of silica accumulated in the limestones were descending solutions enriched in silica derived from the weathering zone. This silicification affected the topmost part of the Upper Jurassic massive limestones and the deeper portions of the bedded limestones along the fracture systems and stylolites. Early Cretaceous tectonic activity generated new dislocations and re-opened the existing faults, which were subsequently filled with permeable Albian quartz sands. These openings became the migration pathways for ascending, warm, relict, sulphide-carrying hydrothermal solutions at the second formation stage of the epigenetic mineralization. The newly supplied silica from the Albian sands precipitated on the silicified limestones and, as concentric rims, on brecciated, early diagenetic cherts. The second-stage mineralization proceeded under phreatic conditions, presumably close to a fluctuating mixing zone of ascending, warm hydrothermal solutions and descending cold groundwaters. The brecciated cherts acting as silica crystallization nuclei indicate that the last mineralization stage probably followed the final phase of Cenozoic faulting.

Opis:
The depositional history and facies heterogeneity of the epigenetically dolomitized Middle Triassic carbonates of southern Poland are poorly recognized, and existing concepts of fluid circulation entirely overlook the primary lithology as a factor controlling fluid flow. This study reconstructs the consecutive phases of Kraków-Silesia Sub-basin history in the Anisian and highlights their influence on the development of the so-called “ore-bearing dolomite”. Extensive fieldwork and microfacies analyses were carried out in order to decipher the original depositional fabric of the ore-bearing dolomites. As a rule, epigenetic dolomitization affected a horizon of porous strata, 35 m thick and resting directly on impermeable, wavy-nodular clay-rich calcilutites of the Gogolin Formation, which represent the interval of deepest and fully marine (offshore) sedimentation. The sedimentary succession of the porous strata is bipartite. The lower part (Olkusz Beds) is composed of Balanoglossites and Thalassinoides micritic firmgrounds and peloidal packstones-grainstones, representing shoreface-foreshore facies assemblages, whereas the upper part (Diplopora Beds) consists of dolocretes, rhizolites, cryptalgal laminites, peloidal packstones-grainstones and bioturbated fine-grained dolostones, formed in a system of tidal flats and lagoons. These two parts are separated by a subaerial disconformity, which marks a sequence boundary. During emersion, the underlying deposits were subjected to meteoric diagenesis, which led to the development of moldic porosity. This combination of depositional history and diagenetic alteration determined the routes of initial migration of dolomitizing solutions on the one hand, and the location of cavern formation on the other. Owing to progressive dissolution, small caverns were changed into large karstic forms, in which the ore minerals precipitated ultimately. These findings emphasize the importance of sedimentological analysis to the understanding of the evolution of the Kraków-Silesia ore province.
