Opis:
New designs of internal combustion engines require the use of engine oils that can cope with more demanding conditions, primarily with greater loads and higher temperatures. The requirements of recent years have led to a wider use of modern base oils and specially designed additive packages. This avoids the formation of impurities and changes in viscosity as a result of shearing of the viscosity additives under high loads. The article discusses the important problem of oil aging during operation and the impact of this phenomenon on the operation of internal combustion engines. The influence of oil service life and its replacement on the emission of toxic exhaust gas components was discussed, and the results of research on the effect of oil service life on changes in their viscosity were presented.

Opis:
The article deals with the problems of handling used motor oils on the railways of Ukraine. At the moment, this waste is transferred to other enterprises for disposal. But, based on international experience, it is advisable to be regenerated directly at the enterprise where it is formed. The purpose of this work is to develop a modern scheme for oil waste disposal. In this regard, various indicators were investigated, reflecting both the operational suitability of oils and their toxicological parameters. As a result, we proposed a scheme and selected special equipment for handling the used engine oils, which allows to reduce the technogenic load associated with their accumulation, handling and minimization, contributes to the return of oil to the technological process. The calculated value of the conditional environmental effect and the approximate payback period allowed us to draw conclusions about the undoubted environmental and economic effect of implementing the proposed scheme.

Opis:
For heavy-duty vehicles and road transportation, fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions have been of great concern, which has led to the development and implementation of technologies to reduce their impact on the environment. Low viscosity engine oils have arisen as one proven cost-effective solution to increase the engine efficiency; however, for the heavy-duty vehicle segment, engine protection against wear is a priority for end-users, and therefore there is some reluctance to the use of that new oil formulations. In this study, eight lubricant oils, representative of the HTHS viscosity reduction that heavy-duty oils have been undergoing and new API CK-4 and FA-4 categories, were evaluated for fuel economy, oil performance and engine wear, in a long-term test involving a fleet of 49 heavy-duty vehicles of four different engine technologies, some of them with diesel fuel and others with compressed natural gas. Results of fuel economy were positive for most of the buses’ models. Regarding oil performance and wear, most of the formulations were found to be suitable for extended oil drain intervals (ODI); and although no alarming results were found, overall performance of the formulations of the fourth stage could lead to significant wear if the oil drain interval is extended. In this study, it should be noted that some of the information has been presented by the authors in other publications, here they are presented with the purpose of complementing the new results and summarize the entire test.
W pracy, przedstawiono badania ośmiu olejów smarowych o obniżonej lepkości wysokotemperaturowej HTHS reprezentatywnych dla produkowanych obecnie kategorii olejów do pojazdów ciężkich, z uwzględnieniem nowych kategorii oleju API CK-4 i FA-4.

Opis:
The paper presents a test of a self-ignition engine equipped with high-pressure fuel-dosing system based on injection units with electronic control system. The engine was fuelled with conventional fuel and few kinds of non-converted vegetable oil. The analysis of the experiment results correlated with knowledge of their properties shows the important conclusions about possibilities, disadvantages and perspectives of the fuels usage in contemporary engines equipped with electronic control fuel-dosing system. The vegetable oils have a special place in history of automotive industry. In 1900 a great event on Word Trades in Paris was compression-ignition engine fuelled by groundnuts oil — a masterpiece of no one else like Rudolf Diesel. R. Diesel, aware of conventional fuels limitation, patented in 1892 a vegetable oil as a fuel. The NOx concentration in exhaust was measuredfor maximum engine speed (1900 rpm). The lowest emission ofmeasured compounds was observed in case of sunflower oil and rape oil "Biedronka" (65% and 75% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil). The highest values were detected for post frying palm oil and rape oil "Aldi" (120% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil).

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the performance of compression ignition engine using a biodiesel extracted from waste cooking oils (WCO), such as, falafel frying palm oil, chicken frying soybean oil, and fresh oils, such as soybean and olive oils. After producing biodiesel from WCO and fresh oils, the mixtures were blended with pure diesel in two percentages as follows: B20 (20% biodiesel from each type, 80% pure diesel) and B10 (10% biodiesel from each type, 90% pure diesel). The biodiesel blends were used as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. The ignition performance of the fuel blends was compared with that of pure diesel B00 (0% biodiesel, 100%pure diesel). To analyze the effect of biodiesel on engine performance, the engine was operated at variable load from 0 to 6 kW and constant speed at 2000 RPM. For engine performance, brake power, brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency were analyzed. The results showed that pure diesel produces higher brake force (BP) than all biodiesel blends. The highest value for brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) at variable load is for B20-F (20% biodiesel from falafel frying oil, 80% pure diesel) is equal to 0.243426 gm/kW.s. The highest value for brake thermal efficiency (BTE) is for B10-S (10% biodiesel from soybeans oil, 90% pure diesel) is equal to 27.6%.

Egyptian waste cooking oils have special specifications because it expose to high temperatures during use for long hours. In the present experimental study, the performance and emissions of a four strokes, single cylinder, aircooled diesel engine fuelled with two different biodiesel from Egyptian used cooking oil (palm and sunflower) are evaluated at different speeds. The measured performance parameters include torque, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature. Brake power, brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency was calculated using the measured test data The emission parameters include carbon monoxide, particulate matter and the oxides of nitrogen. The tests have been carried out with different blends of B5 to B100 of biodiesel with diesel fuel. The results showed that the cetane number of sunflower biodiesel has dropped significantly as a result of high temperatures and negatively affected the performance and emissions of the diesel engine also the engine performance with the palm biodiesel blend B5 is closed to diesel fuel also, for B5 CO emission decreased from 53 to 70% while NOx emission decreased from 13 to 80% compared to diesel fuel.

Opis:
Two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines are widely used in large ships due to their good performance and fuel economy. However, there have been few studies of the effects of lubricating oils on the vibration of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines. In this work, the effects of three different lubricating oils on the vibration characteristics of a low-speed engine are investigated, using the frequency domain, time-frequency domain, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) methods. The results show that non-invasive condition monitoring of the wear to a cylinder liner in a low-speed marine engine can be successfully achieved based on vibration signals. Both the FFT and STFT methods are capable of capturing information about combustion in the cylinder online in real time, and the STFT method also provides the ability to visualise the results with more comprehensive information. From the online condition monitoring of vibration signals, cylinder lubricants with medium viscosity and medium alkali content are found to have the best wear protection properties. This result is consistent with those of an elemental analysis of cylinder lubrication properties and an analysis of the data measured from a piston lifted from the cylinder after 300 h of engine operation.
