Demographic problems, including ageing of the Polish population, appear to be the challenge of the 21st century. This issue does not concern Poland exclusively, but rather involves the whole European Union. That is why it is necessary to undertake research in order to provide diagnoses, analyse the results and develop prospects needed to solve this matter. Shaping the safety of the elderly is a duty of authorities, local government entities and non-governmental organisations.

Time definition of this process is very difficult, because the life situation of an individual human being significantly changes its course. In the evaluation of the aging process of the elderly in addition to calendar age, which to a small extent determines the spiritual and physical human efficiency, the biological age and mental state together with the social situation should also be taken into account. The age of sixty five has conventionally been adopted as the lower limit of old age. In the group of people crossing that limit there is a substantial difference in the condition and needs, which to a lesser extent depend on chronological age and to greater extent on other factors. Older people during this period of their lives experience numerous medical and social problems (major geriatric problems, loneliness, ageism).

Opis:
The following article analyses participation possibilities of older people in Austria based on the demographic change. On this basis, categories of work types are established and discussed. This concerns the areas of people’s own work, familial work, informal and formal engagement as well as paid work. The social worker’s attempts to the creation of the informal and formal engagement are presented from an Austrian perspective. Introduced volunteers centres and citizens’ offices devote themselves to the coordination of the engagement within the community. In addition, there are new attempts arising in volunteer’s work, like for example voluntourism. Social inequalities are to be considered in participation within society. Th ese form along the differences of age, gender, levels of education, migration and socio-economic status. Different participation areas are furthermore to be distinguished against the background of a critical discourse around participation. Participation can cause positive eff ects for older people and therefore it seems important to work on its realization. Part of this task is to indicate diff erent barriers and possibilities of implementation. Finally, quantitative proportions and developments in the diff erent working forms of older people will be discussed.

Aim. This article presents the results of research whose aim is to establish if social networks are useful tools to promote social relationships and support for the elderly citizens. Method. One hundred thirty people over the age of 65 participated in the research. For this purpose, the scale “elderly people and social network” (elaborated ad hoc) was applied. Results and conclusion. The results obtained through descriptive analysis of the gathered data indicate that social networks provide support for elderly people who had already acquired digital competence in the past. The study also reveals that there are personal variables, especially of an educational nature, that determine the acquisition of an active role as generators and producers of digital content (prosumers). In conclusion, it could be said that social networks have a positive influence on the well-being of the elderly and their fight against undesirable loneliness. The more heterogeneous the social network is, the more active the elderly people are.

Opis:
The world is facing a series of changes that will modify the way we envisage transport planning in our cities. Demographic ageing as a consequence of higher life expectancy and lower fertility rates is a world-wide phenomenon. While ageing is indeed a triumph of scientific progress and increasing longevity is perceived as one of humanity’s greatest achievements, the transition in society needs to be managed. In the urban context, any increase in age, health, and economic conditions determines one’s ability to enjoy the urban milieu and the so-called economies of urbanisation (advantages gained from an urban location, e.g., proximity to a market, labour supply, good communications, and financial and commercial services) longer. As there are more and more elderly people in cities, urban mobility becomes crucial in making the urban environment more inclusive. In order to provide suitable policy guidelines, it is, therefore, necessary to investigate and understand senior traveller behaviour.   In this study, we investigate urban travel characteristics of people aged 65 years and over living in the city of Genoa (one of the cities with the largest population of the elderly in the EU). By utilising a structured questionnaire, the paper explores the satisfaction and motivations of approx. 600 elderly public transport users in the city. In particular, exploratory factor analysis has been used to determine the key dimensions of the satisfaction and mobility motivations, and subsequently to use them to investigate the cost sensitivity of elderly people.

The aim of the study. The aim of the paper is a comparison of tolerance to uncertainty in two groups of elderly: the students of the University of the Third Age (UTA) and older people who are not enrolled but help to educate grandchildren. A relation to uncertainty was shown to infl uence on decision making strategy of elderly that indicates on importance of the researches. Methods. To obtain the objectives of the paper the following methods were used: 1) Personal change readiness survey (PCRS) adapted by Nickolay Bazhanov and Galina Bardiyer; 2) Tolerance Ambiguity Scale (TAS) adapted by Galina Soldatova; 3) Freiburg personality inventory (FPI) and 4) The questionnaire of self-relation by Vladimir Stolin and Sergej Panteleev. 40 socially involved elderly people were investigated according the above methods, 20 from UTA and 20 who are not studied and served as control group. Results. It was shown that relations of tolerance to uncertainty in the study group of students of the University of the Third Age substantially differ from relations of tolerance to uncertainty in group of older people who do not learn. The majority of students of the University of the Third Age have an inherent low tolerance for uncertainty, which is associated with an increase in expression personality traits and characteristics in self-relation. The group of the elderly who are not enrolled increasingly shows tolerance of uncertainty, focusing on  the social and trusting relationship to meet the needs of communication, and the ability to manage their own emotions and desires than a group of Third Age university students. Conclusions. The results of experimental research of the third age university student’s peculiarities of the tolerance to uncertainty were outlined. It was found that decision making in the ambiguity situations concerning social interaction is well developed in elderly who do not study. The students of the University of Third Age have greater needs in conversation, social interaction than the control group and should learn to make decisionin ambiguity or uncertainty situations.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

Opis:
Depression is the most common mental disorder among people over 65 years old, making it one of the most significant health problems for this population. Due to the fact that medications and psychological therapy are not effective in all cases, many studies in recent decades have highlighted alternative treatments for depression. In particular, physical exercise has been highlighted as a potentially beneficial form of treatment. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a review into the relationship between exercise and its effects on the treatment of depression in the elderly. Specifically, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for articles on the effectiveness of physical activity interventions for the treatment of senile depression and the reduction of its symptoms. The results show that physical activity is effective for reducing the symptoms of depression amongst the elderly. The positive effects of physical activity in the treatment of depression in the elderly were found for both endurance and resistance exercises, and for low-, moderate- and high-intensity exercise. Positive effects were observed for both traditional and water-based forms of exercise. Aligning the type and intensity of exercise to the patient’s personal preferences also helps to enhance the effectiveness of training. Overall, it was concluded that physical exercise can serve as a valuable strategy for the protection of mental health amongst the elderly. However, more research is needed to clarify the most effective type, intensity, and frequency of exercises to treat depression.

Opis:
An observable feature of post-modernity is the social pressure that forces women and men, regardless of age, to accept the criteria for classifying and valuing the body in the context of a strongly rooted cult of attractiveness, with a youthful appearance at its center, and which is promoted by the mass media. While it is more realistic for younger people to meet these expectations, there can be many difficulties for those who experience progressive body aging. This article presents an analysis of statements made by elderly women and men, in which they share their definitions of attractiveness in general, as well as their opinions on the attractiveness of their appearance and how they evaluate it. The point of reference for these reflections is Catherine Hakim’s concept of erotic capital, in which the attractiveness of an individual is understood in a multidimensional way – including physical appearance, biogenic features, personality traits, and the demographic and social conditions of someone’s image. We are also based on the gendered age approach, i.e. femininity and masculinity are analyzed in the context of the desired appearance in relation to age (here, an old woman and an old man). The collected material leads to the conclusion that, to some extent, seniors have internalized social expectations concerning the appearance of the body of contemporary man, including the appearance of their aging bodies. However, the age of the respondents makes them pay attention to many more elements of human attractiveness than just physicality. Their gender also differentiated their views.

Opis:
The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic brought to light certain deficiencies in the social security infrastructure which should guarantee social security for all Polish citizens while ensuring, in particular, the possibility of exercising the right to health protection and social services for functionally disabled people. The pandemic became a “detonator” revealing, both in the scientific and public discourses, problems connected with the effective exercise of the rights to social security and health protection vested in elderly people, including those with functional disabilities. The article notably focuses on two areas of social life in which compliance with fundamental rights related to the dignity of a human being is linked to the respect and observance of rights related to the functioning of a specific age group – people over 60 years of age. The pace of demographic changes is not without impact on the quality of life of elderly people. The article attempts at outlining the problems triggered by the demographic changes taking place in Polish society and at indicating the legal context, often related to the specific needs of senior citizens, or, more accurately, to the failure to satisfy these needs. The purpose is to shed light on the social dimension of respecting elderly people’s rights to social support in the form of providing access to social security and health care institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions asked are: Are elderly people’s rights to social security and adequate health protection respected in Poland? Did the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic improve or worsen the situation in Poland in this regard?
Pandemia koronawirusa SARS-CoV-2 uwidoczniła braki infrastruktury zabezpieczenia społecznego, która powinna gwarantować bezpieczeństwo społeczne wszystkim obywatelom Polski, a w szczególny sposób powinna zabezpieczać możliwość korzystania z prawa do realizacji usług zdrowotnych i społecznych osobom niesamodzielnym. Celem jest przybliżenie społecznego wymiaru respektowania praw osób starszych do wsparcia społecznego w postaci dostępu do instytucji zabezpieczenia społecznego i ochrony zdrowia w okresie pandemii COVID-19.

Background. In the elderly, nutrition significantly influences biological aging and physiological and pathological changes in the body. A balanced diet and physical activity are the key to good physical and mental health. Objective. The aim of this study was: (1) to perform nutritional screening tests in senior citizens residing in eastern Poland and (2) to evaluate the risk of malnutrition in elderly people who live with their families, seniors who live independently, and residents of nursing homes. Material and method. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) screening tool comprising a questionnaire with 22 questions and an abbreviated and survey-adapted version of the questionnaire (KomPAN) were used to investigate eating habits and self-perception of health and nutrition. A total of 398 correctly filled out questionnaires were selected and the resulting data were subjected to statistical analyses in the Statistica 10 program. Results. The BMI values of most respondents were indicative or malnutrition or risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender (mean BMI 23.88 kg/m2 ±5.08). Most overweight and obese respondents were female (p=0.0001). The observed decreased BMI values was significantly (p=0.0012, rs= 0.6714) correlated with lower food intake. Unintentional weight loss greater than 3 kg was most frequently noted in respondents living in nursing homes and living independently (p=0.0021). Eating difficulties also considerably influenced the respondents’ nutritional status. The respondents’ BMI values were significantly correlated (p<0.0001) with their MNA scores, the average MNA score was 21.0±4.4, (rs = 0.7293). Overweight and obese respondents were more likely to consume at least three meals daily (OR=1.87; 95% CI: 1.32-2.06; p<0.001). Conclusions. The BMI values and MNA scores of the tested subjects indicate that the majority of the surveyed respondents were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender. In the present study, the residential environment significantly influenced the patients’ nutritional status, in particular in respondents with impaired motor abilities and eating difficulties.

Background. A thorough understanding of nutritional needs, food attitudes, and preferences are necessary for aging societies. So far the detailed studies on food attitudes and their determinants among elderly people were relatively scarce. Objective. This research was aimed at the determination of relationships between food attitudes and some sociodemographic features among elderly people, students of the Third Age University in Poland. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 607 students of the Third Age University based on the authors` questionnaire. The survey was anonymous. The attitudes towards health benefits of foods, novel foods, light and organic foods, food as a reward and pleasure, restriction of food intake, and the packaging and composition of food were investigated. Results. The relationships between attitudes and gender, age, education level, professional activity, BMI index, and economic status were differentiated. The positive attitudes over 50% were noticed only for the health benefits of foods and the packaging and composition of the food. For the other attitudes, the neutral attitudes were dominant. The three significant relations between attitudes and sociodemographic determinants were notices only for gender, two such relations were found for professional activity, the economic status and BMI index, and relations between age or education level – only for a single attitude. Conclusions. The obtained results may be explained as a complex effect of specifics of this group and the overall tendency for conservative attitudes observed among elderly people. The food attitudes are significantly related to gender and other determinants become much less important for the surveyed group of the participants of the Third Age University.

Individuals with particular qualities or characteristics are predisposed to develop cognitive impairment non dementia. The main aim to study socio-demographic factors and personality traits, that contribute to the development of depressive disorders in elderly patients with cognitive deficits. The purpose of the article was to show that it is important to investigate the socio-psychological factors that can worsen the course of cognitive impairment, which already comes with age. During the research an observational study involving 111 patients from Kazakhstan with cognitive deficits was conducted: 59 patients, whose depressive disorders had been identified by clinical and psychopathological research using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HRSD) and 52 patients for whom psychogenic depressive disorders had not been defined. The recruitment of the study participants was carried out in the state nursing home for the elderly and disabled. The study included male and female individuals aged 60-74 years with different national and ethnic backgrounds, with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, who wished to participate in the study and signed an informed consent to participate in the study. This study uncovered the primary factors that increase the chances of individuals with cognitive impairments developing a depressive disorder. These factors include personal attributes of the patients, such as their sex, whether they are married or not, and the quality of their relationship with their family members. In addition, personality traits from before their cognitive decline, such as a tendency for isolation, insecurity, and passivity, were also significant. This study could have an exceptional value for medicine and psychological workers on the whole and in Republic of Kazakhstan in particular to prevent depressive diseases were mentioned.
