The article presents trends of change in Warsaw's economic structure and their influence upon the formation of the city's functional and spatial structure. Using the latest data on the employment structure and kinds of economic entities and their distribution, an attempt has also been made to determine the degree of absorption of the city economy by pro-development activities. On the basis of experiences of other European cities activity types indicating the existence of development trends in the city economy (pro-development activities) were chosen. Next, changes in the number of economic entities in these areas in 1988-2004 were analyzed. Research on the distribution of economic entities in Warsaw is based upon data from the REGON register.

Among the foundations of the currently prevailing economic model is the assumption of rationality of decisions taken by a far-sighted and calculating human being - homo oeconomicus. However, the theory built on the basis of this assumption cannot embrace such phenomena as the economic crisis after 2007. Thus, new concepts are emerging such as behavioural macroeconomics that extend the current paradigm to include also irrational behaviours. The above issues are discussed most comprehensively by George Akerlof and Robert Shiller in their Animal Spirits that analyses such factors as confidence, sense of fairness, antisocial behaviour, the money illusion and stories dominating the public discourse. The above analysis paves the way for a new school of macroeconomics. This paper presents the above underlying assumptions against the background of an economic crisis.

In the article the social and economic transformation of Afghanistan is examined in a historical perspective. The author notices that Afghanistan's trajectory of development, since the modernization of the country began in the 19th century, has eventually produced the state of so-called 'Dutch disease', that is, a relationship between the increase in exploitation of natural resources and a demise of the manufacturing sector. In the Afghani case, the natural resources' responsible for halting industrialization are narcotics (opium), on the global exports of which the entire local economy became strictly dependent. The author names number of reasons behind such a direction of development, including political, economic, an cultural factors but remains skeptical about possible ways out of that developmental trap.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article aims to analyse Georgia’s short ‑term economic prospects and to make well ‑founded conclusions on the Country’s potential to return to the pre ‑crisis rate of growth in the near future. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: For evaluat‑ing Georgia’s growth perspective, Country’s essential macroeconomic indicators and statistical data are thoroughly analysed, along with profound study of global economic outlooks and quarterly reports from three prestigious international institutions (IMF, World Bank, EBRD). THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Apart from relevant professional and scholarly literature, current economic trends in Geor‑gia are presented in the paper, revising such important issues like FDI and remittances inflow, foreign trade, currency depreciation, government spending and national debt, so those variables that af‑fect the domestic economy at most. Georgia is small, open economy and because of its high dependency on the external sector, certain significant economic tendencies in main partner countries and in the world in general are also applied in the article. RESEARCH RESULTS: On the one hand, the decline of capital inflow into the Country, and socially‑oriented government spending on the other, depreciated the national currency gradually and made Georgia’s external liabilities very costly. Neither the depreciation of the currency, nor export subsidies helped the Country’s exports to recover. This is partially conditioned also by economic troubles in main trade and investment partner countries of Georgia. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The article intends to enrich the understanding of how small, transition economies operate in uncertain financial environment and what perspectives they have in dealing with external shocks. Current regional and global context, along with obvious drawbacks in Georgia’s fiscal policy make the possibility of regaining pre‑crisis growth rates unrealistic in the near term. The country needs the diversification of export markets and its foreign investment sources, to cut government spending on social programs and bureaucracy, and to direct funds on infrastructural projects.

Regardless of the fact that economics distinguishes itself from other social sciences by a high level of formal deductive modelling, it is a social science due to the essence of the economic process where a human is a subject and an object at the same time. In recent years this issue has been more frequently emphasized by economists in ongoing discussions. In the discussions, a good deal of time is devoted to economic models and, mainly, their relations with the socioeconomic reality and coherence of empirical evidence. The article presents a thesis that some mainstream economic theories have not always constituted the background to their practical applications, which led - and still can lead- to the dogmatic and inflexible use of model solutions for economic phenomena which are difficult to forecast in a non-variant rigid model. The aim is to critically analyse the beliefs about the usefulness of universal economic models in the economic reality advocated by mainstream economists, and to prove that not all economic models have constituted the background to their practical applications.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of economic inertia. The authors of the study conducted sufficiently detailed research of economic inertia, on the basis of which the damage to the economy from various economic reforms or economic shocks can be revealed in a timely manner. as Additionally, guidelines can be outlined for further economic growth and sustainable economic development. In their in-depth research on the concept of economic inertia, the authors introduced into usage and employed new concepts of certainty, uncertainty, insufficiency and the redundancy of economic inertia. The authors delineated out as many as four levels of complexity of economic inertia uncertainty. The empirical research is based on a model of the impact of subsidies on the economy. The research model demonstrates that the use of subsidies decreases the market equi-librium price. Innovative companies lose motivation to pursue sustainable economic growth and ensure competitiveness. In this case, the phenomenon of economic inertia is obvious and deprives businesses of the incentives to use innovation to ensure eco-nomic growth. Thus, subsidies as a system of stimulus and rescue in the strategic as-pect of increasing competitiveness have negative effects on the country's economy.

Since a radical change in economic policy and business practice is necessary, the approach and research methodology in ES should also change, which means the need to change the paradigm of these sciences. It is worth remembering that the task of ES is to model economic and business processes, because ES have both a cognitive-explanatory (positive) and directive-suggestive (normative) component. The latter component are patterns and recommendations related to the economic and business reality, and they should be different from those known from the past and to a large extent still practiced in the present.

Social trust is increasingly seen as a non-economic determinant of economic development. Its positive impact on the economic sphere of social life, proven by numerous studies, is an incentive for new research initiatives examining the social trust level, since the results may be vital for the local policy-making. The main aim of the article is to study the relationships between social trust and the economic development. To accomplish this goal, a social trust indicator and an economic ranking list for the researched units were created. The statistical analyses performed demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between the examined phenomena and proved that the highest developmental level is a characteristic feature of the districts with a high level of social trust. This conforms the claims of Polish and international scholars who see trust as a non-economic determinant of economic development.

This paper presents and applies an economic model developed for the management of dredged marine sediments. The model predicts direct project costs and direct, indirect and induced economic impacts. The model is applied to analyse the economic aspect of the specific potential beneficial use of dredged sediment for land reclamation in an Irish context. The model results show the potential economic benefits to land reclamation of using dredged sediment including its value as a potential substitute for quarry based material and as an alternative to traditional offshore dredged sediment disposal, where appropriate. Analysis of other sediment management approaches including wetland creation, is also presented with the results for wetland creation indicating its potential, where appropriate, as a valuable alternative to offshore disposal. Indicative economic benefits are predicted by the model for the different dredge sediment management approaches analysed.

Subject and purpose of work: The main goal of this work is to identify and systematize the geoeconomic threats that directly affect the development of small countries with economies in transition. The subject of the study is geoeconomic security (GES) of small countries with economies in transition. As an independent variable is GES, and the dependent GES of Georgia. Materials and methods: The research is of an empirical nature, and belongs to the category of qualitative research. The case-study method is used as a basic methodological approach. Results: The future of the country should be viewed in a geo-economic context. The country’s security should be developed through economic cooperation, which would not only ensure stability and economic growth would also benefit both in terms of political and in the economic security. Conclusions: Georgia needs to fully use its geo-economic potential (both internal and external), which is a reliable source of weakening geo-economic threats.
Materiały i metody: Badania mają charakter empiryczny i należą do kategorii badań jakościowych.

This study examines the causal links between improvements in economic freedom and changes in GDP per capita of new EU members in transition in the period 2000-2009. The empirical results suggest significant causality running from changes in monetary and fiscal freedom, trade openness, regulation of credit, labour, and business, legal structure and security of property rights, and access to sound money to movements in GDP per capita, especially in less and moderately developed CEE transition countries. Moreover, we find evidence that improvements in economic freedom are one of the main factors stimulating the convergence of these economies towards rich EU members. The evidence of causality in the opposite direction is much weaker.
