The paper concerns the quality of interaction between the basic elements of the railroad surface, based on digital modeling. A map of vertical displacements of railroad subgrade was developed in the function of changing conditions in the subgrade load capacity. These conditions were characterized by the indicator value of the subgrade density and the location of subgrade density zones. The article presents the continuation of research, which at the introductory stage was focused only on the analysis of normal stress and shear stress in the railway sleeper.

This paper presents an analysis of the vibrations and displacements of the tool during the turning of hardened steel for various turning parameters. Studies have shown that an increase in feed from 0.1 to 0.35 mm / rev results in an almost two-fold increase in radial displacement of the tool. It has also been shown that the combination of high feeds and high rotational speed of the workpiece causes a rapid increase in vibration in all directions.

Opis:
The paper presents a method for conducting measurements and processing the results that makes it possible to determine the vertical displacements of measurement and control network points stabilized outside and inside a building in which changes in the form of scratches and cracks on the external and internal walls were noticed. These changes were so disturbing that a number of technical opinions were issued on the technical condition of the building, the ground and water conditions as well as the location of other buildings in relation to that object. The measurement methodology is generally known, but the problem of correctly defining a reference system and estimating the values of vertical displacements still remains to be solved. Moreover, the paper presents the characteristics of the object subjected to research, its technical condition in 2006 and in 2015 as well as an analysis of the impact of a heating duct on the behaviour of the building.

Opis:
Corrugated steel plates are highly rigid and as the constructions can be immersed in soil, they can be used as soil-steel structures. With an increase of cover depth, the effectiveness of operating loads decreases. A substantial reduction of the impacts of vehicles takes place as a road or rail surface with its substructure is crucial. The scope of load’s impact greatly exceeds the span L of a shell. This article presents the analysis of deformations of the upper part of a shell caused by a live load. One of the assumptions used in calculations performed in Plaxis software was the circle-shaped shell and the circumferential segment of the building structure in the 2D model. The influence lines of the components of vertical and horizontal displacements of points located at the highest place on the shell were used as a basis of analysis. These results are helpful in assessing the results of measurements carried out for the railway structure during the passage of two locomotives along the track. This type of load is characterized by a steady pressure onto wheels with a regular wheel base. The results of measurements confirmed the regularity of displacement changes during the passage of this load.

Opis:
In many cases of monitoring or load testing of hydrotechnical structures, the measurement results obtained from dial gauges may be affected by random or systematic errors resulting from the instability of the reference beam. For example, the measurement of wall displacement or pile settlement may be increased (or decreased) by displacements of the reference beam due to ground movement. The application of surveying methods such as high-precision levelling, motorized tacheometry or even terrestrial laser scanning makes it possible to provide an independent reference measurement free from systematic errors. It is very important in the case of walls and piles embedded in the rivers, where the construction of reference structure is even more difficult than usually. Construction of an independent reference system is also complicated when horizontal testing of sheet piles or diaphragm walls are considered. In this case, any underestimation of the horizontal displacement of an anchored or strutted construction leads to an understated value of the strut’s load. These measurements are even more important during modernization works and repairs of the hydrotechnical structures. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibilities of using modern measurement methods for monitoring of horizontal displacements of an excavation wall. The methods under scrutiny (motorized tacheometry and terrestrial laser scanning) have been compared to classical techniques and described in the context of their practical use on the example hydrotechnical structure. This structure was a temporary cofferdam made from sheet pile wall. The research continuously conducted at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology made it possible to collect and summarize measurement results and practical experience. This paper identifies advantages and disadvantages of both analysed methods and presents a comparison of obtained measurement results of horizontal displacements. In conclusion, some recommendations have been formulated, which are relevant from the point of view of engineering practice.

Opis:
The paper presents results of numerical calculations and modeling of mining-induced surface deformation based on Finite Element Method (FEM). Applying the numerical method discussed to calculations allows us to assume a larger number of factors, such as rock mass structure, fracture network, rock properties, etc., which essentially affect the results obtained. On the basis of an elastic transversely isotropic model, an analysis of horizontal displacement distribution and surface subsidence was carried out for two sample regions of mines. The results of numerical calculations were later compared with the measured values. Such an analysis proved that the applied numerical model properly described distribution and values of subsidence and slope of subsidence trough, though there were serious differences in the values of calculated horizontal displacement, especially in areas of far influence range. In order to improve the matching, the influence of boundary conditions of the model on the value of calculated horizontal displacement was analyzed. The results are presented in graphs.

Displacements and strains of main beams of bridges were investigated before and after the strengthening executed by FRP composite materials. The paper analyzes the stiffness of the Orthofix external fixation system at axial pressure load, applied to the lower leg in case of an unstable fracture. Based on the actual construction of the Orthofix fixator, its 3D model was formed, and then a structural analysis was performed in the CATIA V5 software system. The aim of this paper is to investigate the mechanical properties of Orthofix fixator. FEM analysis of the fixator revealed displacements at characteristic points of the structure and fractures. During the FEM analysis, it is possible to change the load values, all with the aim of obtaining the best possible information about the behavior of the fixator during installation and use by the patient. Based on the results obtained from the FEM analysis, it can be concluded that the Orthofix fixative shows very good stiffness, but also that it can be improved by using newer materials, such as composite or some alloys of titanium and aluminum.

The investigation of technical condition of cooling towers is an important engineering issue. Regulations regarding safe operations of high structures force periodic measurements in order to determine technical state of such towers. This paper presents the processing methodology of laser scanning data and shows computation results of cooling tower W-1 shape changes. These results were referred to the designed shape of the tower in question. Tower surface displacements (deformations) are shown by plotting the deviations of the measured shape from the regular one. The determined changes in the surface shape are between –20 cm and 5 cm. This article presents the evaluation of the technical condition of the W-1 cooling tower.

Opis:
The article presents the basic rules for constructing and training neural networks called the Support Vector Machine method as well as possible applications for this kind of network. SVM networks are mainly used for solving tasks of classifying linearly and non-linearly separable data and regression. However, in recent years more applications have been found for them. The networks also solve such problems as the recognition of signals and images as well as speech identification. In this paper, non-linear SVM networks have been used for classifying linearly separable and non-separable data with a view to formulating a model of displacements of points in a measurement-control network. The points of the measurement-control network were placed on a civil engineering object located on expansive soil (linearly separable data) and represented a mining exploitation area (linearly non-separable data). The task of training SVM networks requires the use of quadratic programming in search of an optimum point of the Lagrangian function in relation to the parameters being optimised. In the case of linearly non-separable data, the SVM method makes it possible to find a hyperplane which classifies objects as correctly as possible, and at the same time is located possibly far away from concentrations typical of each class.

In a dynamic machining process, distortion in surface irregularity is a very complex phenomenon. Surface irregularities form a periodic representation of the tool profile with various kinds of disturbance in a broad range of changes in the height and length of the profile. To discern these irregularity disturbances, interactions of the tool in the form of changes perpendicular and parallel relative to the workpiece were analyzed and simulated. The individual kinds of displacement of the tool relative to the workpiece introduce distortions in the changes of height and length. These changes are weakly represented in standard height and length irregularity parameters and their discernment has been found through amplitude-frequency functions.
