Opis:
The aim of this study was to explore cultural factors affecting burial rituals in Poland. Thirty-four university students collected data from their relatives and created written narratives about deaths in their families or community. Ten additional interviews were conducted with community members, a priest, and medical personnel as part of theoretical sampling and verifi cation of emerging theories. The qualitative material was administered with NVivo and analysed using the Grounded Theory techniques to produce a complex description of folk beliefs, superstitions, as well as symbolic and psychological meaning ascribed to traditional customs. Some of the practices were found susceptible to extinction due to industrialisation, globalisation, and cultural development.

Opis:
Death and dying offer an important paradox for investigation. Both are feared and to be avoided but also generate considerable reverence, curiosity and mystery. The latter is investigated through thick ethnographic data collected in a Thai Buddhist hospice and the following pages provide some description of an alternative cultural-spiritual framing of anticipating death. The former part of this paradox is explored using detailed autoethnographic-autobiographical data arising from the cognitiveemotional conflict between the researcher’s cultural schemata and the phenomena in which the research process is embedded. Sociological speculations are offered as to the value and insights of this methodological approach and to anticipating dying as an important phenomenon for further inquiry into everyday social life.

Opis:
One of the many research passions of Magdalena Sokołowska, regarded as the founder of Polish and cofounder of European medical sociology, was sociothanatological problems in the broad sense. Magdalena Sokołowska’s version of “socio-thanatology” presented at the end of the nineteen-seventies and the early eighties consisted first of all in sociodemographic considerations. The deontological and ethical-moral problems, as well as individual existential experiences associated with the process of dying, being disregarded during the period in question, appeared in M. Sokołowska’s research conceptions and papers in the nineteen-eighties. She was particularly concerned with the patterns of dying in medical institutions, conceptions of dying trajectories, processes of “waiting for death”, mechanisms of the institutionalization, commercialization and medicalization of dying, differences between the conditions and context of dying at home and in the hospital, consequences of “slow dying” for the range of social roles performed by the doctor and the nurse, the scope and character of changes in the function and structure of the family in the course of the process of dying and as a result of the death of one of its members, analysis of social behaviors after death in the institutional and noninstitutional context (hospital, hospice, home), etc. The analysis of Magdalena Sokołowska’s “socio-thanatological” achievements allows us to notice a clear evolution of her conception: from the “epidemiological-demographic” approach, oriented towards analysis of mortality, to a preference for “qualitative” interpretations based on the investigation of “subjective emotions” that accompany dying persons.

Opis:
Man is the only earthly creature who is aware of himself and of the inevitability of his death. Death, as a mystery and inescapable reality, has always been the subject of reflection and research. Popes have also discussed this issue in their teaching. The aim of the article is to present human attitudes toward death in Gregory the Great’s homilies from the fifth and sixth centuries. A textual analysis of these homilies reveals that man should prepare himself for death in such a way that death arouses not fear, but rather joyful entrustment to God. Gregory’s homilies also convey that the decisions that a person makes throughout his lifetime have a powerful impact on the moment of his death. Pope Gregory demonstrates the interdependence of the free decision that man makes at the moment of death and the gift of eternal life with God. The pope proclaims that if someone lives a sinful life, then evil spirits will fight for his soul at the moment of his death. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to put one’s life in order before death and to be safeguarded by the prayer of the community of the Church at the moment of death.

Opis:
The primary goal of this pilot study is to examine the relationship between the fear of dying and religiosity. The religiosity is seen as a complex concept of religious orientation. In addition to testing the relationship between the fear of dying and the religiosity itself, religious orientation (intrinsic vs. extrinsic), age, sex of subjects, and subjects’ experience with death of somebody close to them were tested. Subjects were Slovak male (N = 24, 38.1%) and female participants (N = 39, 61.9%) aged 19 to 69 (M = 39.62; SD = 14.76) from various social and educational backgrounds. Subjects with dominant intrinsic religious orientation (N = 31; 51.67%) reported significantly lower fear of one’s own dying (U = 232; p < .001). Intrinsic religiosity is negatively correlated (r = -.33, p < .01) with the fear of one’s own dying. We didn´t find statistically significant differences in fear of dying between believers and nonbelievers, men and women, younger and older subjects, subjects with and without experiences with death of somebody close to them. The important finding is, that the difference between the fear of one’s own death and death of somebody else was statistically significant in all studied groups. Therefore, the attention should be paid not only to the variables influencing the level of fear of dying but also to that whose dying evokes fear.

death as social phenomenon
process of dying
Opis:
Introduction: The phenomenon of death has always accompanied the humanity. Formerly, it was familiarised, interspersed in human life, natural and unquestionable. Currently, it is treated as ‘taboo’, controlled medically and pushed to the limits of capability, though inevitable. From socio-medical point of view death is a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing a range of social situations which accompany the process of dying. However, passing away itself is not the main interest for sociology but the gradual ‘process of dying’ with timeframe set by the diagnosis and death. Purpose: To present the range and specificity of thanatological issues which have occurred in classical Polish sociology of medicine. Material and methods: The study is theoretical and has been compiled on the basis of the selected literature on the topic from the period between 1960 and 2013. Results: The issues of death and dying have always been present in Polish sociology of medicine. It first appeared in western and Polish socio-medical literature in the seventies of the twentieth century. The main topics of social analysis refer to communication and interaction between the environment and the moribund as well as institutionalisation of death and dying, social attitudes towards death and all the problems that the close and relatives of a dying person struggle with. Conclusion: The role of critical sociology is also worth mentioning because it challenges inadequacy of hospitals as bureaucratic institutions to situational requirements of the process of dying.

Opis:
John Paul II could be rightly called the ‘Admirer of life’. His deep faith, along with the existential reasons, the sources of which could be traced back to his traumatic experiences during the Second World War, moulded him into a strong defender of human life. The Pope teaches that a civilization’s worth is determined by its attitude towards human life; it is either the civilization of life, or the destructive civilization of death. Since body constitutes an integral part of the whole human person, its dignity is enhanced. In his ‘theology of the body’ John Paul II stressed not only the sharing of the body in the dignity of the person, but also its importance as a sign and a needle in the compass of the human intellect in its search for moral norms. The Polish Pope insisted on the value of human life from its inception to natural death, and often presented various ruling elites with a challenge: Life is sacrosanct and this truth must be reflected in legislation. Human life is, according to John Paul II, the penultimate things; life is limited, mortal. The value of human life is determined by its destination: the human being is to find his fulfillment in eternity, where he will have a share in the everlasting life. Thirty years after the elevation of Karol Wojtyla to the Holy See we may confidently give him the credit for influencing the change in sensitivity to human life on a truly global scale. Though the contrary tendencies are very strong, thanks to the Polish Pope the impact of the culture of death has been significantly restricted.

Opis:
The aim of this issue of Ethics in Progress is to provide a provisional, open-ended view on the ultimate realities of life and the ethical challenges they pose in medical, sociological, and existential contexts. The issue explores axiologies and meta-ethical narratives related to the art of dying, or in other words the moral domain encompassing the quest for a good life and a good death. Two problematic aspects emerge from the latest body of research: (1) the difficulty involved in tackling ethical challenges in medical and sociological contexts; and (2) the marginal role of the patient’s agency and narrative-ownership of end-of-life decision-making. A direction is pointed out that suggests that interventions across interdisciplinary groups involved in medical aid to dying should focus on promoting ethical behaviour on the side of healthcare personnel. Finally, attention to language, discourse, communication, and the narratives of death and dying call this edition of Ethics in Progress to examine the ontological and epistemological categories that underlie the study of lifeworlds and ‘discourse communities’, which are those associated with moral agents interlacing historical motives, language, communication, normative beliefs, social norms and roles, power relations, hard clinical evidence, and contested values in the context of medical practices and, broadly speaking, practices surrounding death.

Opis:
The author of the article poses the question repeatedly asked in the world of media, culture and science, concerning the limits of journalistic integrity and informational necessity in the media coverage of human death, especially in relation to how the moment of a tragic death and its immediate consequences are presented. He considers the teachings of the Church and John Paul II on the necessity of respecting human dignity in journalism, with particular focus on the dignity of the dying person, in addition to the respect towards the body of the deceased person. The author analyzes selected media messages with content of interest from the years 2017–2020, and referring to the reactions of some representatives of foreign media, he makes an attempt to construct a list of postulates for increasing the degree of sensitivity in the area of the discussed issues. In the preparation of this article, which is essentially a case study in journalistic ethics, the method of content analysis was used primarily in relation to the examined media presentations and the analytical‑synthetic method when it comes to extracting ethical guidelines from the analyzed texts and in constructing the conclusions.
Analizie poddaje wybrane przekazy medialne o adekwatnej treści z lat 2017–2020, a odnosząc się do reakcji niektórych przedstawicieli zagranicznych mediów, dokonuje próby skonstruowania listy postulatów dotyczących podwyższenia stopnia wrażliwości w obszarze omawianych zagadnień.
