The work presents an implementation of a modular measurement and control system that controls variants of mains supply of 230V electrical equipment. The system allows to supervise power consumption in the office electronic equipment. The system detects the instant of the reduced power consumption by a device and makes possible its switch-off in order to reduce energy cost. The current is measured with integrated current/voltage converters. The customized hardware has been built for the distributed acquisition system that includes: the data sending module with wireless transmission using ZigBee standard between the measurement point and monitoring point and switching devices. The measurement module was implemented using Altera FPGA.

The non-contact current measurement method with magnetic sensors has become a subject of research. Unfortunately, magnetic sensors fail to distinguish the interested magnetic field from nearby interference and suffer from gauss white noise due to the intrinsic noise of the sensor and external disturbance. In this paper, a novel adaptive filtering-based current reconstruction method with a magnetic sensor array is proposed. Interference-rejection methods based on two classic algorithms, the least-mean-square (LMS) and recursive-least-square (RLS) algorithms, are compared when used in the parallel structure and regular triangle structure of three-phase system. Consequently, the measurement range of RLS-based algorithm is wider than that of LMS-based algorithm. The results of carried out simulations and experiments show that RLS-based algorithms can measure currents with an error of around 1%. Additionally, the RLS-based algorithm can filter the gauss white noise whose magnitude is within 10% of the linear magnetic field range of the sensor.

The paper focuses on the problems of monitoring the resistance spot welding process of thin metal sheets used in aircraft structures. The welding process is conducted using welders with software control which allows the welding cycle to be established. Essential parameters in the welding process include: electrode profiles, establishing electrode force as well as the shape and the intensity of the current heating the weld. The paper proposes using a measurement system which registers the above-mentioned welding process parameters and utilises the modules of data acquisition, series NI 9215 operating in a set with NI cDAQ-9178. Software which uses the LabVIEW environment was implemented into the measurement system. The measurement of the welding current intensity was made using a Rogowski coil, while other measurement signals were obtained from the diagnostic interface of the programmable controller of the welder. The paper presents preliminary results of the research. The objective of the initial research is the preparation of a calibration method of welder measurement systems.

There are many problems in practical diagnostics of high-power, squirrel-cage induction machines, operated in industrial conditions. These problems make the diagnostics a difficult matter. The problems appear already at the stage of gathering diagnostic signals. The only practically accessible signals are the currents on secondary sides of current transformers monitoring supply currents of separate machines. Due to the proximity of other conductors, carrying high currents, these signals are sometimes accompanied by heavy background noise. The next stage of the diagnostic procedure is off-line analysis of registered signals referring to investigated objects. The main problem at this stage is proper interpretation of gotten results, especially in the cases where determination of the cage state, of investigated machines, is difficult due to ambiguity of diagnostic signals. The ambiguities and doubts by taking diagnostic decision result from that the diagnostic-like signal could be generated not only by cage damage but also by slightly asymmetrically manufactured rotor cage. In such difficult cases, the many-year diagnosing experience is the indispensable precondition for proper diagnostic verdict. The present paper includes some reports on case studies encountered during practical diagnoses of high power, 6kV induction machines, operated in real industrial conditions.

Magnetizing current effect minimization in current transformers is considered in this paper. Double-core current transformer operation is described in the following text. The influence of the magnetizing current, which is a significant element of current transformer's error, has been minimized in a new type of double-core current transformer connection. The accuracy evaluation of built double-core current transformer has been carried out according to obtained transformation precision.

Thermal modeling in frequency domain and experiments using IR thermography are performed to evaluate RMS current in electrical power lines. The model implements interface thermal resistance between the metal core and insulation layer. This allowed matching the results of simulations and measurements with acceptable accuracy. The proposed method requires the use of known values of heat transfer coefficient and thermal parameters of the cable and its insulation. In consequence the proposed method requires calibration.

Pulse width modulation (PWM) of inverter output voltage causes the waveforms of motor phase currents to consist of distinctive ripples. In order to provide suitable feedback for the motor current controllers, the mean value must be extracted from the currents’ waveforms in every PWM cycle. A common solution to derive the mean phase currents is to sample their value at the midpoint of a symmetrical PWM cycle. Using an assumption of linear current changes in steady PWM subintervals, this midpoint sample corresponds to the mean current in the PWM cycle. This way no hardware filtering or high-rate current sampling is required. Nevertheless, the assumption of linear current changes has been recently reported as over simplistic in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives operating with low switching-to-fundamental frequency ratio (SFFR). This, in turn, causes substantial errors in the representation of the mean phase currents by the midpoint sample. This paper proposes a solution for deriving mean phase currents in low SFFR PMSM drives, which does not rely on the linear current change assumption. The method is based on sampling the currents at the start point of a PWM cycle and correcting the sampled value using a model-based formula that reproduces the current waveforms. Effectiveness of the method is verified by simulation for an exemplary setup of high-speed PMSM drive. The results show that the proposed method decreases the error of determining the mean phase currents approximately 10 times when compared to the classical midpoint sampling technique.

Hydrographic and current measurements are analysed for stagnant deep-water conditions over the south-eastern topographic flank of the Eastern Gotland Basin (EGB) in April 2000. Results suggest a prevailing barotropic motion mode on a synoptic scale of several days. Deep along-slope volume transports derived from subsurface current meter moorings are compared with those of the baroclinic fraction of geostrophic motions crossing the plane of a hydrographic section. This was aligned perpendicular to deep isobaths and was repeated 40 times with a time step of six hours. Changes in regional winds produced a quasi-ten day cycle in the filling level of the Baltic Proper. Associated wave-like fluctuations of the mass field propagated cyclonically with a velocity of about 0.04 m s−1 around the deep basin’s rim. It is concluded that associated changes in deep volume transports result mainly from barotropically governed advection processes and that those of the baroclinic component of geostrophic currents provide a qualitatively and quantitatively quite inaccurate description of related transport fluctuations on a daily scale.

Opis:
To improve operational reliability of electrical machines over a long period of time, the diagnostic tests should be performed systematically. This justifies the monitoring of machines, particularly those which do not have the reserve at the workplace: the power generators, hoisting machines in mines, etc. The issue of monitoring and diagnostics of electrical machines is focused on assessing the technical condition of the mechanical system and the electromagnetic circuit. In this article the objectives of remote monitoring and diagnostics of technical condition of electrical machines are described. Devices used by staff of Laboratory of KOMEL to monitor and diagnose electrical machines, results of tests performed on electrical machines in different technical condition are also described. In order to run monitoring, GSM network is used. Diagnostic signals and technical infrastructure for the transmission of measurement data are described in the article.
Aby poprawić niezawodność działania maszyn elektrycznych w długim okresie eksploatacji, należy systematycznie przeprowadzać testy diagnostyczne. Uzasadnia to monitorowanie maszyn, zwłaszcza tych, które nie mają rezerwy w miejscu pracy: agregatów prądotwórczych, maszyn wyciągowych w kopalniach itp. Problem monitorowania i diagnostyki maszyn elektrycznych koncentruje się na ocenie stanu technicznego układu mechanicznego i obwodu elektromagnetycznego. W artykule opisano cele zdalnego monitorowania i diagnostyki stanu technicznego maszyn elektrycznych. Opisano również urządzenia stosowane przez pracowników Laboratorium KOMEL do monitorowania i diagnozowania maszyn elektrycznych, wyniki badań przeprowadzonych na maszynach elektrycznych w różnych stanach technicznych. Do monitorowania wykorzystuje się sieć GSM z transmisją danych. Sygnały diagnostyczne i infrastruktura techniczna do przesyłania danych pomiarowych jest również opisana w artykule.

In the context of the environmental monitoring of the Concordia wreck removal project, measurements of currents, winds and sea level height were made along the eastern coast of the Giglio Island, Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), during 2012—2013. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of atmospheric forcing and periodic sea-level changes on the coastal currents. Normalised Cross-Correlation Function analysis allowed us to correlate these observations. A marked inter-seasonal variability was found in both current and local wind velocity observations but a significant level of correlation between the data was only found during strong wind events. Current and wind directions appeared to be uncorrelated and current measurements showed a predominant NW—SE direction, presumably linked to the shape and orientation of Giglio Island itself. During strong winds from the SSE, current flow was towards the NNW but it suddenly switched from the NNW to the SE at the end of wind events. The results show that, at Giglio Island, currents are principally dominated by the general cyclonic Tyrrhenian circulation, and, secondly, by strong wind events. The sea level had no effects on the current regime.

Opis:
For wind turbines that feed into public grids limits for voltage and current harmonics must be assured. To verify that the actual levels are valid, measurements are necessary. Problems can occur to determine which part of these harmonics has its origin in the wind turbine. It is shown that also harmonics which originally have zero sequences can be transferred over a delta-star-transformer, if the currents of the wind turbine are asymmetric due to unbalanced loads. Measurements in an existing wind turbine configuration are discussed, which confirm the described effects.

Electrochemical amperometric gas sensors represent a well-established and versatile type of devices with unique features: good sensitivity and stability, short response/recovery times, and low power consumption. These sensors operate at room temperature, and therefore have been applied in monitoring air pollutants and detection of toxic and hazardous gases in a number of areas. Some drawbacks of classical electrochemical sensors are overcome by the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) based on ionic liquids. This work presents evaluation of an SPE-based amperometric sensor from the point of view of current fluctuations. The sensor is based on a novel three-electrode sensor platform with solid polymer electrolytes containing ionic liquid for detection of nitrogen dioxide − a highly toxic gas that is harmful to the environment and presenting a possible threat to human health even at low concentrations. The paper focuses on using noise measurement (electric current fluctuation measurement) for evaluation of electrochemical sensors which were constructed by different fabrication processes: (i) lift-off and drop-casting technology, (ii) screen printing technology on a ceramic substrate and (iii) screen printing on a flexible substrate.

Rare-earth permanent magnets are coated in order to avoid corrosion. When considering the rated geometrical properties of a sample, the coating thickness has to be known precisely as it wrongly enlarges the magnetically active volume which in turn affects the accuracy of the measured magnetic properties. In this work, the sensitivity of hard magnetic material property measurements regarding the consideration of different coating thicknesses is evaluated. Moreover, the impact of eddy current effects on the magnetic properties is studied when measuring in an open circuit. Additionally, an outlook for a measurement-based determination of the electric conductivity of permanent magnet samples is given.

Undisturbed collection of current from a contact wire of the catenary constitutes one of the basic elements in reliable operation of electrified rail transport, particularly when vehicles move at high speed. Quality of current collection is influenced by the construction of catenary and current collectors, as well as by the technical condition and regulation of these two elements. Total contact force of a current collector head on contact line and the condition of contact strip surface determine the quality of the contact between a current collector and contact line. This paper presents an innovative stand for diagnosing contact strips on current collectors with the use of 3D imaging technique. The stand has been tested in laboratory and during trial exploitation on a railway line. Implementation potential of the proposed method has been confirmed.

The technical condition of current collector contact strips is very important when operational reliability of railway transportation is considered. The authors proposed a novel measurement system based on a 3D camera to register the shape and dimensions of the current collector contact strips surface. The system was installed above the railway track for tests in target ambient. During the trial operation a few dozen of contact strips 3D-profiles were recorded for the locomotives which passed the test point. The collected results vary widely, particularly with regard to the position and tilt of the obtained profiles. This variety makes the surface analysis more complex. Therefore, an automatic method for normalization of the registered profiles was introduced. Standardized profiles are compared with the pattern of a new contact strip in order to estimate their wear. Summary of scanning and analysis results confirm the possibility of commercial use of the introduced system.
