Opis:
One of the most important elements of road construction is its substructure, which constitutes the base on which the next layers of road are placed. Mixture of crushed-stone aggregate is very often used as material for substructure. The most frequently used type of aggregate is magma rocks, due to its good physicalmechanical properties. However, it is not always available, so it is substituted by sandstone or even concreto rubble aggregates. The bearing ratio CBR is a parameter determining the suitability of a certain aggregate for road substructure. It is also one of the most popular quality tests of aggregate as it does not require complex apparatus. This paper analyses the results of physical and geotechnical tests with particular focus on CBR bearing ratio of crushed aggregates and their application as substructure for road construction. There has also been an attempt to find the correlation between CBR bearing ratio and other physical and geometrical properties.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to determine the impact of physical and mechanical properties of rocks on the electricity consumption of a jaw crusher during crushing. This paper presents a different approach to determine the energy consumption during comminution. The energy required for crushing rocks was obtained by direct measurement of crusher's motor power during the crushing of samples. Laboratory tests were used to determine the following physical and mechanical properties of the tested samples: bulk density, compressive strength, tensile strength, hardness, and fracture toughness. After that, the laboratory jaw crusher crushing tests were conducted. In the first part of the study, the individual rock samples were crushed one by one. In the second part of the test, multiple samples were crushed simultaneously. By measuring the energy consumption for crushing rocks with different physical and mechanical properties, we explored the dependence of energy required for crushing on individual mechanical properties of rocks and the simultaneous effect of the properties. Using statistical analysis of the influence of individual mechanical properties we found that the greatest influence on energy consumption for crushing was compressive strength. Fracture toughness and tensile strength of the rocks had a significant impact on the crushing energy. The effect of bulk density was not large while for the hardness could not be stated that it had influence. By the analysis of deviations of specific crushing energy calculated using equations obtained by multiple regression analysis of simultaneous influence of multiple mechanical properties of rocks and from the measured values, it was found that the dependence obtained on the basis of all investigated properties showed the smallest deviation and dependence obtained by compressive strength, fracture toughness, and hardness showed significantly smaller deviation. By examining the influence of mechanical rock properties on particle size of crushed material it was found that the increase in compressive strength increased the proportion of larger particles while other properties showed no effect.

Opis:
The deformation modulus and permissible stress are two independent parameters that depict the carrying capacity of foundations, including earthworks and ballast layer. Nevertheless, while designing the track superstructure or controlling its state, they are considered separate to each other, even though they are terms of the same measure. The scientific problem is due to the practical necessity of unified building rules and standards. The carrying capacity of earthworks and foundations is regulated with standards based both on deformation and on stress criteria, which are not related to each other. This plays particularly important role for railway ballast layer, as an intermediate between the solids and soil. The objective of the present research is to estimate the relationship between deformation modulus and the strength of ballast layer. An overview of modern approaches according to the relation between the stiffness, deformation modulus, elasticity and strength of soils and crushed stone is done. The strength of ballast layer is considered depending on the experimental test: the direct shear test, compressive strength in the uniaxial or biaxial stress state. Load transfer model in crushed stone is proposed. The load transfer angle and cone of loading distribution are determined based on the load transfer and compressive strength models. The relation between deformation modulus and strength is derived from two simple laboratory experiments with cohesionless ballast material. The experiment tests have shown that the ballast stiffness as well as its strength are influenced with the support stress. The measurement of elastic and residual settlements for the different support stress values enables to determine the relation. It can be potentially used for the development of methods for the ballast compaction control, unification of construction norms. The research result should be considered as an approach for unification of two different ways to reflect the carrying capacity of ballast layer.

Opis:
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of plastic waste as fine aggregates to partial replacement of sand reinforced with inorganic pigment from red stone to manufacture paving block for pedestrian application. This is an effort not only to reduce plastic waste in the environment but also as an innovative way to find out an alternative eco-friendly paving block material for public walkways with an attractive appearance while ensuring pedestrian comfort. Design/methodology/approach: Approaches were converted the plastic waste to plastic powder which is then used as fine particles to sand partial replacement. The red stone powder is used to give red color to the paving block surface. The paving block materials were completely mixed in a pan mixer and added water as much as 12% of the total mass of the materials used. The paving block was cast in a mold dimension size of 20 cm × 10 cm × 6 cm and pressed with a load of 6 tons using a pressing machine. The effect of natural river sand to plastic powder ratio and curing time on the compressive strength and water absorption were investigated. Findings: The study results confirmed that the replacement of sand with plastic powder decreased the compressive strength of paving block. By partial replacement of sand with plastic powder in the range of 10% to 50% by weight, the compressive strength and water absorption value of pavement after 30 days agitation were at range of 18.06-12.78 MPa and 4.28-3.25%, respectively. This value was still met the minimum requirement for pedestrian applications according to Indonesian National Standard. Research limitations/implications: Replacing sand up to 50% by weight with plastic waste produces paving blocks with compressive strength and water absorption suitable for sidewalks and pedestrians. It is needed to continue research in terms of durability tests in order to be comfortable with the practical use of the material. Practical implications: The use of plastic waste reinforced with red stone powder as fine aggregate makes it one of the alternative ways to reduce plastic waste in the environment and obtain eco-friendly paving blocks with an attractive appearance. Originality/value: It has been experimentally proven that replacing sand up to 50% by weight with plastic powder produces paving blocks that are suitable for pedestrians application. The addition of red stone powder pigment makes the color of paving block surface become more attractive appearance.
