Opis:
The dimension of a tree crown has an apparent effect on and is strongly linked with the growth of the tree and its diverse parts. Crown information is an important part of numerous growth and yield models. Hence, empirical predictive equations for crown diameter of a mixed species plantation in Southern Nigeria were developed and evaluated in this study. In studying this phenomenon, total enumeration of the selected species in the mixed species plantation was carried out. Moreover, major growth attributes of 185 trees of six species, namely; Khaya ivorensis, Entandrophragma angolense, Terminalia ivorensis, Tectona grandis, Treculia africana and Mansonia altissima were measured and estimated using mensurational methods. Descriptive, correlation, regression and residual analyses were then applied to the quantitative data obtained from the mixed species plantation. For all the species, the best adjudged model with the best fit indices was Ln(cd) = Ln(b0) + b1·CPA·dbh, R2 = 0.936, SEE = 0.037; an indication of parsimonious potential of a predictive exponential model. This paper, therefore, revealed the possibilities of predicting crown diameter for a mixed species plantation in Nigeria with ample prospects for sustainable planning and management decisions that are relevant for any mixed species plantation.

Crowdsourcing is a recent concept, very popular in companies’ practice and literature. In literature there are many definitions of this concept, but some of them are inconsistent and incomplete. In this paper, existing definitions of crowdsourcing are analyzed to extract common elements and to establish the basic characteristics of any crowdsourcing initiative. Based on these existing definitions, an exhaustive and consistent definition for crowdsourcing is presented and contrasted in thirty two cases.

Opis:
In this paper we address the question how the presence of an aromatic moiety affects the proton affinity of crown ethers. In order to compare the proton affinities of crown ethers studied (M), we compared the abundances of protonated crown ethers ([M + H]+ ions) with the abundance of the ion [NH2-B15C5 + H]+ (formally also protonated crown ether). Both [M + H]+ and [NH2-B15C5 + H]+ were formed as a result of decomposition of [NH2-B15C5 + H + M]+. The presence of a benzene moiety fused with a macrocyclic ring strongly decreases the ratio [M + H]+/[NH2-B15C5 + H]+. Thus, the higher ring strain caused by the benzene moiety leads to a substantial lowering of the proton affinity of crown ethers. It is also suggested that for protonated benzocrown ethers the ring strain is partly compensated by the proton-đ interaction. The presence of an NO2 group decreases the electron density on the aromatic ring and, consequently, the proton-đ interaction is suppressed. As expected, the proton affinity of benzo-crown ethers increases with increasing size of their cavity since the ring strain is lower for larger molecules. An unexpectedly high proton affinity of dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) has been observed.

Opis:
Crown ratio is a term used to describe the ratio of the crown length to the total tree height. The crown length emphasizes the distance between the crown apex and the crown point while the distance between the tree apex and the ground level defines the total tree height. The tree crown ratio are predicted by the use of empirical models which assist in the provision of accurate estimates for both individual, stand growth as well as yield that are veritable tools for evaluating numerous management and utilization decision. However, no single type of model can provide sufficient information effectively for all levels of decision making, thus the essence of modeling tree crown ratio for Hevea brasiliensis plantation in Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN). Tree growth variables are such as diameter at the base (DB), diameter at the breast height (DBH), crown diameter (CD), crown length (CL), total tree height (THT) were measured from a six year old plantation of 402 trees, while tree attributes such as crown projection area (CPA), basal area (BA), tree slenderness coefficient (TSC), crown ratio (CR) were estimated using their empirical formula. The data collected from the plantation was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation and regression analyses with non-linear models used in fitting the data into CR equations and other growth attributed with individual data fitted to evaluate the robustness of the models using the fit indices. The result of the study reveals that there were significant variations in the growth attributes within the plantation in the study area. The result of the correlation analysis between CR and other growth characteristics revealed significant associations. The best adjudged CR model was the logistics model which is represented as CR=a_0/(1-e^(^(1-a_(1 ) CL+a_2 THT)) ) ; (R2 = 0.96 and SSE = 0.1177). The study has shown that crown ratio models developed has significant relationship with CL and THT and this can be successfully used for predictive studies on crown attributes for Hevea brasiliensis plantations in Nigeria.

Opis:
Mutational witches’ broom is a part of the tree crown with abnormally dense branching and slow shoot growth, which putatively originates from a cell in a bud apical meristem and can be visually differentiated from the normal crown. The witches’ broom forms a large branching system which competes sufficiently with other parts of the tree crown. However, the competitive relationship and the interaction between the mutant and normal crown parts have not yet been studied. We investigated the patterns and dynamics of the competitive relationship between witches’ broom and normal branching systems of the same tree of five Pinaceae species by tree ring analysis. Three saw-cuts were made in each tree: on the lateral branch with the witches’ broom, on the proximal part of the axial branch in front of the branch with the witches’ broom, on the distal part of the axial branch right after the branch with the witches’ broom. An- nual radial growth was measured to the nearest 0.01 mm, and annual ring areas from three saw-cuts were analysed to compare the growth dynamics before and after witches’ broom appearance. The growth of the lateral branch with the witches’ broom sharply increased in the year of witches’ broom appearance by 2–10 times. The growth of the distal part of the axial branch sharply decreased in the same year, which could be explained only by the witches’ broom appearance. All branches with witches’ brooms gradually became thicker than the distal part of the branch, 3–150 times at the peak of growth, and occasionally outgrew even the proximal part of the branch. Thus, witches’ broom is drastically morphologically and physiologically different from the rest of the crown. All witches’ brooms had their own vertically oriented axis of symmetry and represented autonomous branching systems that were not subordinate to any other branching systems. They break the normal donor-acceptor relationship in a tree and eagerly consume resources without being fully involved in their production. The mutation clearly affects the hormonal regulation of growth and morphogenesis and turns a witches’ broom into a new metabolic sink.

An experimental investigation is presented on flotation of Cs+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ cation metals from dilute aqueous solutions using lariat ethers with a novel protonionizable group in the presence of foaming agent. The influence of concentration of Li+, Na+, K+ (as source of foreign cations) on kinetic rate constant and maximal percent removal was studied. The addition of Li+, Na+, K+ cations (over 1.0ź10-3 mol/dm3) depressed the removal of Cs+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ remarkably, and the removal of floated cations was very low (at the concentration of alkali metal cations – 1.0ź10-2 mol/dm3). The influence of foreign cations on flotation depression increases in the order: K+ < Li+ < Na+. Authors propose the correlation between the maximal percent removal of Cs+, Sr2+ or Ba2+ and concentration of Li+, Na+ or K+ cations in aqueous solution.

Evidence has shown that drought-induced crown dieback has significant interaction with soil-plant water and nutrients relationships, but there isn’t sufficient knowledge of the water and nutrients connections in declining Persian oak (Quercus brantii) trees. To investigate the relationships between crown dieback and leaf nutrients concentrations, leaf water content, soil nutrients concentrations and soil moisture, one of the dieback affected stands was selected. This stand was located in Shalam forested area in northern Ilam province, west of Iran. Persian oak trees were evaluated using a crown dieback classification and divided into four classes with four replicates based on the severity of crown dieback. Sampling from leaves of trees and soil was implemented randomly in four sides of tree crown in August. Trees with moderate to severe declining showed reduced leaf water content (WC) and reduced relative leaf water content (RWC). Leaf N and P concentration of declining trees was significantly (p-value <0.05) more than that of healthy trees. The leaf K concentration of declining trees was significantly (p-value <0.10) more than that of the healthy. The leaf N:P amounts of oak trees was statistically different among crown dieback classes. But no significant differences was observed between the healthy and declining trees in terms of soil N, P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations and soil moisture. It was concluded that drought has effects on the nutrients status in the leaves of Persian oak trees and their changing in the declining trees is for resistance to drought condition, improving water use efficiency and possibly performance of vital activities.

Separation among rubidium and potassium ions from salt lake brines remains challenging. In this work, a typical room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-metyhlimidazaolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2mim+][NTf2-]) was used as diluent and synergistic extractant, dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6) was used as extractant to extract rubidium ions from brine solutions which contain high concentrations of potassium ions was investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the single extraction efficiency of rubidium ions was up 93.63%. The thermodynamic parameters of the rubidium ion extraction were obtained. Based on the slope analysis method, the extracted species in the organic phase were ascertained as 1:1 complex. UV-visible has been performed to investigate the ion concentration of ionic liquid before and after the interaction of metal ions and ligands. Rubidium ions in [Rb · DCH18C6]+ complex were stripped by 2.5 mol · L–1 NH4NO3. The extraction system offers high efficiency, simplicity and environmentally friendly application prospect to separate rubidium from brine solutions.

Opis:
The article deals with taxation of tobacco and tobacco products in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After tobacco was imported into Poland, its use spread extremely quickly; initially it was used as snuff, and from the 18th century onwards, smoking in pipes became prevalent. Importantly, tobacco and tobacco products were then regarded as a medicine to prevent and cure almost all diseases. Duties on tobacco/snuff were first imposed in 1643 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in the Crown tobacco monopoly was introduced in 1659. From that time, tobacco/snuff duties were imposed regularly in Lithuania; in the Crown duty on these products was imposed once again in 1677, and then in the 1690s tobacco monopoly ended throughout the Polish Republic. The issue was revived only in the times of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, when tobacco monopoly was introduced, initially managed by a private company called Kompania Tabaczna, and then, in the 1690s, by the state-owned Manipulacja Tabaczna. However, over the whole period under consideration, revenues from tobacco/snuff taxation were relatively small.

This work presents the synthesis of a strongly hydrophobic, functionalized monaza crown ether, i.e., lariat ether, namely N-(diethylthiophosphoryl)-aza[18]crown-6 and its application as ion extractant in solvent extraction systems. The synthesis of thiophosphorylated aza[18]crown-6 was performed with good yield. Separation systems have been successfully developed to extract Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) into organic phase, i.e., chloroform with the crown ethers: aza[18]crown-6 and N-(diethylthiophosphoryl)-aza[18] crown-6 as extractants. The selectivity order in both crown ethers was Pb(II) >> Cd(II) > Zn(II). The obtained results suggest that N-(diethylthiophosphoryl)-aza[18]crown-6 can be used for the selective removal of Pb(II) at lower pH values than aza[18]crown-6.
