    The article deals with a specific type of Nubian royal iconography, namely, the “apse portraits”. The paintings discovered in 2001 at Banganarti (Sudan) form the most numerous and complete ensemble of such portraits. The author follows the evolution of royal power through the prism of its imagery, comparing the Banganarti set with earlier royal portraits from Faras and Old Dongola. She demonstrates the progressive affirmation of the king’s prerogative as the leader of the Nubian church and privileged mediator between God and his people. The examination of royal costume as well as decorative motifs leads the author to propose a more detailed chronology of the eastern chapels of the church.

    An archaeological exploration conducted in 2019 in the crypts of the post-Bernardine church of the Elevation of the Cross in Łuków brought various finds of burial goods, excavated in fragments, probably transferred together with human remains in the 19th century to ossuaries located in the crypt. The artefacts included fragments of three kontush sashes, being the most indispensable and splendid element of the Polish national costume. The analysis of these objects, both in terms of ornamentation and technology, helped us to estimate their probable manufacturing location.

    Traditional elements are generally influenced as the symbols of cultural context that contains the sign of the past. Costume color study of Bangladesh mainly found through psychological thinking that depends on several factors, such as the use of traditional festival elements from history, costume color aesthetics, costume decoration colors of selected geographical regions To analyze costume color firstly, Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) visual analysis method was performed that gives in-depth thoughts on research viewpoints; secondly, statistical analysis was done from research questionaries’ report, and the result has shown that the traditional colors analyzed from the visual analysis are significant. The findings of this analysis would be beneficial in establishing the concept of clothing color in Bangladeshi culture, also presenting an appreciation of the traditional context for the art design learner.

    The paper takes as its focus the theatrical oeuvre of Elżbieta Wittlin Lipton – a Polish émigré artist and the daughter of an eminent Polish émigré writer Józef Wittlin. It presents a concise introduction to the artistic work of Wittlin Lipton – her costume and set designs – which she has been creating on the European (Spain) and North American continents (United States) since late seventies of the previous century onwards. Biographical facts have been outlined here along with the most charactristic features of her artistic style, with a special emphasis laid on the Spanish genius loci which should be regarded as the most outstanding trait of her total work. The paper constitutes a part of a book devoted to the life and artistic achievements of Elżbieta Wittlin Lipton which the author of this manuscript has been currently writing.

    Opis:
    Attempts to regulate by the governance of mode of life and behavior of partials in the history of imperial states were especially evident in the fashion industry. The article explores the evolution of the Russian court costume, as well as the uniform of officials and students during the XVIII-XIX centuries in the context of social political reforms that took place in the state during this period of time. The content of government decrees published in the full collection of laws of the Russian Empire is analyzed, which contain orders on the color of the fabric, cut and trim of the costume. The purpose of this lawmaking is to “reconcile” the old Russian traditions with the norms of modern European life. A special place in the study is given to the reforming activities of Peter I, who, with his decrees, changed the entire “sign” system of Ancient Russia. Peter I “changed clothes” of the Russian elite into a European costume, but after the October Revolution of 1917, the Soviet elite could not wear the prePeter garb, which, like the entire “sign system” of the Moscow kingdom, was associated with the ideas of Orthodoxy, the inviolability and the eternity of regal power. In the 20-30s of the twentieth century, the struggle in the USSR against the tailcoat and tall hat was a struggle against bourgeois ethics, and as a result, a struggle against the norms of Western European etiquette. It is revealed that the problem of “form” in the broadest sense of the word was of particular importance for Russian life. The pressure of a powerful, but not organized force - all this increased the importance of external forms and organization of life, be it a form of government structure or everyday life.

    The aim of the study was to show the principles of nonverbal communication achieved with clothing by using Roman Jakobson’s linguistic method. As demonstrated and established here, clothes and their functions can be translated into verbal and written language. The language of fashion, costume and stage design can be analysed in terms of their function and symbolism. Based on the language function scheme, clothing can be interpreted as the language of communication and as a system. Using purely linguistic methods, examples of various clothing analyses demonstrate the clothing function as a visual sign system, which is equal to the linguistic sign system, language and communication. Different kinds of communication can be achieved through garments, as explained by the examples and discussion selected and described.
    Celem pracy było pokazanie zasad komunikowania niewerbalnego osiągniętego przy użyciu odzieży, stosując metodę lingwistyczną Romana Jakobsona. Jak wykazano i ustalono w pracy, ubrania i ich funkcje można przetłumaczyć na język słowny i pisany. Język mody, stroju i scenografii można analizować pod kątem ich funkcji i symbolizmu. W oparciu o schemat funkcjonowania języka, odzież można interpretować jako język komunikacji i jako system. Przy użyciu metod czysto językowych, przykłady różnych analiz odzieżowych wykazują funkcję odzieżową jako system znakowania wizualnego, który jest równy systemowi językowemu, językowi i komunikacji. W pracy stwierdzono, ze dzięki odzieży mogą być osiągnięte różne rodzaje komunikacji, co opisano i wyjaśniono na wybranych przykładach.

    Corrida the toros is considered a symbol of Spain. Corrida as a spectacle similar to a theatre spectacle is subject to rules. All elements of the spectacle, stages as well as tools used during corrida fall under strict rules, the same applies to the costumes worn by “actors” taking part in the corrida. Traje de luces – a lucent costume, which next to the bull itself is regarded as the most recognisable symbol of corrida. Matador’s outfit is considered as a piece of art by ones, others will see it as a ostentatious costume. What is it in reality? The answer to this question is not easy and obvious. The delicate handwork and fivestar materials position the costume of the matador as a work of art; however, garish colouring and exaggerated embellishments seem rather gaudy. Traje de luces should be always considered in a wider context, because only in that case its symbolism and meaning can be actually interpreted. Outside the corrida de toros the bright costume of the matador is only a colourful outfit, however in its natural environment, that is on the arena, it gains a completely different meaning. In this article, I will introduce various points of view on the topic.

    Since the reform and opening-up, China has actively followed overseas costume trends and bidden farewell to the era of uniforms. It has gone through evolution from collective imitation to physical liberation to the advocacy of diversified individuality to this new age, where the Chinese culture of costume is radiant with self-confidence. The culture of ancient Chinese costume has a long history with extensive and profound connotations. This paper, from the perspective of cultural confidence, adopts the propagation mode of '5W' to discuss the overseas dissemination of ancient Chinese costume culture, the specific content of Chinese-foreign exchange, and theoretical approaches in the theoretical framework of communication based on the case of 'American Tour of Innovative Design Works of Ancient Chinese Costume Culture', organised by Jiangnan University in 2018, in a bid to serve as a reference for the narration of the national story, the communication of a national voice and the creation of a national image.
    Od czasu reformy i otwarcia Chiny aktywnie podążały za zagranicznymi trendami kostiumowymi i pożegnały się z erą uniformów. Chiny przeszły ewolucję od zbiorowego naśladowania, przez wyzwolenie i popieranie zróżnicowanej indywidualności, aż do tej nowej ery, w której chińska kultura kostiumowa promieniuje pewnością siebie. Kultura starożytnych chińskich strojów ma długą historię z rozległymi i głębokimi konotacjami. W pracy, z punktu widzenia zaufania kulturowego, przyjęto tryb propagacji "5W". W artykule omówiono proces zagranicznego rozpowszechniania starożytnej chińskiej kultury kostiumowej, specyficznej treści chińsko-zagranicznej wymiany oraz teoretycznych podejść w ramach komunikacji w oparciu o wystawę "American Tour of Innovative Design Works of Ancient Chinese Costume Culture", zorganizowaną przez Uniwersytet Jiangnan w 2018 roku. Wydarzenie to posłużyło, jako punkt odniesienia dla narracji narodowej historii, przekazywania głosu narodowego i tworzenia narodowego wizerunku.

    The paper explores British heritage films produced over the last two decades of the 20th century in the context of profound cultural and social changes. The international success of heritage films sparked off lively debates about what the term „heritage” stands for. The first part of the paper provides a brief account of the fundamental issues and concepts of the British heritage cinema. The latter part traces the growth and development of the „quality” heritage film which in the l990s evolved into a marketable commodity that can be sold to international audiences.
    Filmy nurtu dziedzictwa kulturowego zrealizowane w ostatnich dekadach XX wieku spotkały się z żywym zainteresowaniem krytyki filmowej i literackiej. Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia główne wątki refleksji filmoznawczej i literaturoznawczej na temat tego zjawiska w kontekście głębokich przemian społecznych i kulturowych na Wyspach Brytyjskich. W części drugiej omówione zostały kolejne fazy rozwojowe i proces międzynarodowej ekspansji tego nurtu. W późniejszej fazie, szczególnie w latach 90.tych, „brytyjskie” z nazwy filmy dziedzictwa kulturowego stały się ważnym segmentem międzynarodowego przemysłu filmowego.

    Opis:
    The principle of making a woven fabric with an ethnic motif according to a costume design from Posavina, Croatia, is described. The specificities and complexities of making these fabrics on weaving looms are described. One way of replicating the patterns of old fabrics as well as the manufacturing problems and technological process are presented. The results led to the conclusion that the possibilities of fabric patterning on looms are numerous, and the replication of some motifs on looms is possible in a shorter time than on hand looms. However, industrial production is still recognisable, and it is impossible to get a characteristic tinge provided by hand weaving. In this sense, the aim of this paper is to investigate and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the industrial production of patterns with ethnic motifs for manufacturing national costumes, which could prove satisfactory when replacing original patterns.
    Opisano zasadę tworzenia tkaniny z motywem etnicznym według projektu stroju z Posavinie w Chorwacji. Opisano specyfikę i złożoność wytwarzania tych tkanin. Przedstawiono jeden ze sposobów odtwarzania wzorów starych tkanin i omówiono problemy występujące podczas tego procesu technologicznego. Wyniki doprowadziły do wniosku, że jest wiele możliwości wzornictwa tkanin na krosnach, a odtwarzanie niektórych motywów na krosnach jest mniej czasochłonne, niż w przypadku tkania ręcznego. Jednakże, tkaniny produkowane przemysłowo są łatwo rozpoznawalne i niemożliwe jest uzyskanie charakterystycznego wrażenia dla tkanin ręcznie tkanych. Biorąc to pod uwagę, celem niniejszego opracowania jest zbadanie i porównanie zalet i wad produkcji przemysłowej tkanin przeznaczonych na stroje ludowe, które mogłyby zastąpić oryginalne tkaniny.

    Opis:
    During archaeological excavations in Nowy Łowicz, Pomerania (Poland), in 1991, burial mound 55 with a woman’s grave was examined, in which numerous fragments of textiles, costume accessories and jewellery had been preserved. The work presents the results of structural and technological analysis of fragments preserved. Based on these, as well as on preserved iconography and analogous archaeological finds, an attempt was made to reconstruct the woman’s clothing from the period to which the grave is dated, i.e. phase B2/C1 of the Roman period. The reconstruction was made by means of computer graphics and includes three elements of clothing: a shirt, dress and short coat, made by identified techniques and partly taking into account the original colours. The work done is particularly important due to the fact that this is the first attempt to reconstruct a woman’s complete clothing worn on the territory of what is now Poland in the above-mentioned period.
    Podczas wykopalisk archeologicznych w Nowym Łowiczu na Pomorzu w 1991 roku zbadano kurhan 55 z grobem kobiecym, w którym zachowały się liczne fragmenty tkanin, ozdób i biżuterii. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analizy strukturalnej i technologicznej zachowanych fragmentów tkanin. Na ich podstawie, a także na podstawie ikonografii i analogicznych znalezisk archeologicznych podjęto próbę zrekonstruowania ubioru kobiecego z okresu, w którym datowany jest grób, tj. fazy B2/C1 okresu rzymskiego. Rekonstrukcja została wykonana za pomocą grafiki komputerowej i obejmuje trzy elementy ubioru: koszulę, suknię i krótki płaszcz, wykonane w zidentyfikowanych technikach i częściowo z uwzględnieniem oryginalnych kolorów. Wykonana praca jest szczególnie ważna, ponieważ była to pierwsza próba rekonstrukcji kompletnego ubioru kobiecego noszonego w okresie rzymskim na terytorium dzisiejszej Polski.
