Opis:
In this paper, we test empirically for the increasing returns-based agglomeration and investigate the impact of the economic integration with the European Union on regional wage inequalities in Poland. In our study, we use the wage data for 16 Polish regions over the period of 1995-2009. Our results are consistent with the predictions of the core-periphery models of the New Economic Geography. In particular, we find that wages decrease as one moves away from the Mazowiecki capital region, as well as from the border with Germany.

Opis:
Over the past two and a half decades, the transition from a centralised to a market economy has affected Romania’s spatial configuration by re-widening the gap between cores and peripheries at a regional scale. Through a statistical analysis carried out for the North-West Region (NUTS 2), my contribution focuses on one of the mechanisms interrelated with peripheralisation, namely territorial mobility. The aim is twofold. First, to show how increasing core-periphery disparities impact mobility flows by offering different levels of structural (dis)advantages. Second, to exemplify how various social groups can influence these (dis)advantages by choosing their place of residence and work.

Scholarly collaboration is relatively well described quantitatively on the macro level thanks to the analyses of large bibliographic databases. At the same time, there are known limitations of the bibliometric approaches to studying collaboration in science. We argue that in order to improve our understanding of social processes operating in science it is necessary to take a more in-depth look: (1) identify kinds of actors that are recognized as potential partners in collaboration, (2) what features of collaborative relations are considered crucial for engaged actors, (3) what kinds of structures of networks composed of collaboration relations actors are embedded in, and what PSR202-02factors influence these structures. With 30 individual in-depth interviews (IDI) with Polish scholars we gathered detailed information about individual collaborations that allowed us to analyze collaborative ties from individual perspective and map respondent-centered networks of collaboration. Scholars identify individuals as well as teams or institutions as collaborators. They also distinguish symmetric and asymmetric collaborations. Structures of respondent-centered collaboration networks are affected by (a) leadership strategies of team principals (especially whether teams are built around positions or individuals); (b) institutional location (by making establishing external collaborations easier for scientists from bigger institutions); (c) scientific degree and recent changes in financing of science (as young scientists receive more freedom from usual organizational hierarchies by receiving substantial grants).

The research presented in the paper used tools offered by network analysis and the graph theory. The study examined the empirical properties of the intra-EU trade network in the years 1999–2019 and confirmed that the EU trade links were of a disassortative nature. The use of network indicators has proven that the European trade network was characterised by a coreperiphery structure. The study shows that Germany was the undisputed leader of the EU trade network over the studied years, although its central position was weakening over the years.

With a focus on the role of geographical factors in economic performance, the main research question of this study is as follows: given that the ongoing crisis in Europe in general and within the Eurozone in particular is felt much strongly in peripheral areas, how and to what extent might geography be relevant to this process? The answer to this question will be searched through historical-comparative approach, focusing on the turning points in the evolution of Europe’s economic and political geography, with particular regard to the key concepts such as “core-periphery dichotomy”, “centres of gravity” and “isolation”. Departing from these concepts, it will be argued that the structural factors, which contribute to the high vulnerability of certain countries towards crisis, are essentially geographical. However, the role of geography and the patterns of peripherality differ from one country to another, as will be demonstrated by means of a particular focus on the case of Greece.

Opis:
According to the core-periphery model, large urban centers can make peripheries dependent on them, or consolidate their advantage over the peripheries through the mechanism of polarization. This article is an attempt to verify the theories of regional development covering the influence of central areas on the development of the neighboring areas, i.e. the core-periphery theories. The article presents a study of the dynamics of development of capital cities of Eastern Poland’s regions in order to answer the question: is the development of capitals of depressed regions correlated with the dynamics of regional development processes? The research has shown that regional capitals do not play the role of voivodeship development stimulators. Therefore it can be argued that in the case of regions with a low level of socioeconomic development, the phenomenon of resource leaching occurs to a greater extent than the stimulation of development by their capital cities.

Opis:
The text is an analysis of the socio-political situation in Western Pomerania during the political crisis in the Polish People’s Republic at the turn of 1971. Szczecin lay in the heart of the workers’ protests, however, it was the events in Gdańsk that received the most spotlight at that time and later on. The article aims to gather and analyse information from primary sources on how the inhabitants of the country learned about social unrest in big cities, how they interpreted and commented on it, and how it all translated into social sentiments. Such an approach to the problem also provides an opportunity to carry out an analysis based on the dichotomy between the ‘core’ and ‘peripheral’ areas. This is possible due to the accessibility of appropriate primary sources, which in the examined cases are constituted mostly by the documentation gathered by the Security Service, so far used to a small extent. It should also be stressed that the documents on the events of December 1970 in the context of the country in Western Pomerania were rather scant. The analysis of the documentation demonstrates how important Szczecin and Gdańsk were for social sentiments in 1970 and 1971. The incidents in ‘core’ cities were closely observed, and the patterns of protesting were then copied by the country. The scale of those ‘peripheral’ protests was smaller, and they usually did not turn into street fights, but their impact was felt, heard and seen. The methods of protesting in the country involved distributing leaflets, making inscriptions, conversing on related topics and, above all, sharing a desire to bring about a socio-political change expressed by strikes and public protests. These occurrences showed how much the ‘peripheral’ areas were inspired by the ‘core’ ones. There is no doubt that December 1970 left a lasting mark on the memory of the inhabitants of the country in Western Pomerania.
