Opis:
In the paper a contour ensemble image segmentation concept is presented. It bases on the previously observed relationship between contours and classifiers. Because of the specificity of the active contour segmentation the method requires a special procedure to obtain ensemble members with desired properties. In this work it is achieved by early stopping of randomized optimization algorithm. The results of the method are illustrated with a practical problem of heart ventricle segmentation by means of active potential contours. Automatically found contours may be of use in a process of pulmonary embolism diagnosis.

Opis:
The theory of wavelets introduced by Daubechies is a developing branch of mathematics with a wide range of potential applications. This paper presents a survey of some methods of detecting sharp cusps of unknown function developed by Wang with examples of their application to detecting sharp contours of images. A simple original algorithm to detect sharp contours of two dimensional images is also proposed and its application is presented. Visual examination allows to state that the results are comparable with the Wang’s method.

Opis:
The current paper examines the role of intonation in the perception of foreign-accented speech. In order to assess how difficult it is to mentally process native, non-native and modified speech melodies, four conditions were analyzed and compared: native English, native English with Czech melody, Czech English with native melody and Czech English. The method of reaction times measurement in a word monitoring task was employed, in which 108 Czech listeners heard English sentences in the explored conditions and pressed a button when hearing a target word. Speech melody turned out to have a relatively weak but discernible impact on perceptual processing. Interestingly, Czech English proved to be more difficult to process than native English, although the listeners were Czech. The implementation of English F0 contours on Czech English speech slightly alleviated the cognitive load, however, the second hybrid, native English with Czech melody, pointed to the opposite direction. The causes of this discrepancy were investigated, particularly higher degrees of collocability in certain expressions.

Opis:
There is a continuing debate in the field of perceptual organization as to whether the locus of global processing is early or late perceptual, as previous studies have yielded contrary results. The conducted behavioural study explored this issue with the paradigm of collating global processing with other process of perceptual organization, namely illusory contours processing. Interaction between these two processes of perceptual organization would indicate that global processing has an early perceptual locus, whereas the lack of such interaction would suggest the late perceptual locus of global processing. In experiment 1, the effect of global dominance was obtained with the use of a compound figure composed of geometrical shapes with real edges. Results showed that the processing of the figure at the global level was faster and that it disrupted the processing of the figures from the local level. In experiment 1b, the compound figure was composed of local geometrical shapes generated with the use of the line-end induced illusory contours (Ehrenstein illusion). Local elements with illusory contours did not affect the processing of the hierarchical structure and the effect of global precedence occurred without any changes. In experiment 2a, a global advantaged effect within a compound figure with local elements with real edges was obtained in the paradigm of attention divided between levels of the hierarchical structure. When illusory contours of local elements of a compound figure were introduced to this paradigm (experiment 2b), this again had no effect on the perceptual global advantage. The results demonstrate the lack of interaction between global processing and illusory contour processing, indicating that the locus of global processing is rather late perceptual.

The results of the gas-dynamic calculation of the low-pressure cylinder flow part of the K-220-44 type steam turbine intended for operation at nuclear power plants are presented. The ways of the flow part improvement were determined. Some of those ways include the use of innovative approaches that were not previously used in steam turbines. The design of the new flow part was carried out on the basis of a comprehensive methodology implemented in the IPMFlow software package. The methodology includes gas-dynamic calculations of various levels of complexity, as well as methods for analytical construction of the spatial shape of the blade tracts based on a limited number of parameterized values. The real thermodynamic properties of water and steam were taken into account in 3D calculations of turbulent flows. At the final step, end-to-end 3D calculations of the lowpressure cylinder that consists of 5 stages were performed. The technology of parallel computing was applied in those calculations. It is shown that due to the application of innovative solutions, a significant increase in efficiency can be achieved in the developed low-pressure cylinder.

Opis:
One of the most popular sources of elevation data covering the most of the Earth's surface with spatial resolution of up to 30 m (1 angular second to be exact) is the SRTM model. This terrain model has two main disadvantages: it covers the area of the Earth between the parallels 54°S and 60°N only, and in some mountainous and desert areas there are gaps (voids) in the data. Additionally, it may not be suitable for more detailed visualization and analysis due to their limited accuracy. Therefore, the paper attempts to find an alternative source of elevation data. One of them may be archival maps, on which the terrain is presented by means of contours. By vectorization of such lines and adding respective attributes they can serve as a base for building digital terrain models. Examples of such maps are maps created in the period before World War II by Polish Military Geographical Institute (WIG). Although newer topographic maps or even more accurate spatial databases exist, it is assumed that as official materials WIG maps were not covered by copyright, so they are in public domain, just like SRTM. Conducted research and literature studies have shown that the issue of using contours extracted from archival topographic maps is not unambiguous. The lack of reproducibility in the results obtained does not allow making clear recommendations on the feasibility of using archival maps. Using a contour drawing as the sole source of elevation data, without any control, should be considered risky. On the other hand, it seems possible to use them as supplementary and perhaps refining material, but only in places where consistency with other data can be observed.

We investigate clustering of 2D contours which represent cross-sections of rotationally symmetric objects. We propose modifications of the existing representations of digitized 2D contours and similarity measures. In particular, we represent each of the investigated objects as a single number and two functions and we use the DTW distance to measure their similarity. We apply our method to clustering of pottery fragments.

A computer vision system is described that captures color image sequences, detects and recognizes static hand poses (i.e., 'letters') and interprets pose sequences in terms of gestures (i.e., 'words'). The hand object is detected with a double-active contour-based method. A tracking of the hand pose in a short sequence allows detecting 'modified poses', like diacritic letters in national alphabets. The static hand pose set corresponds to hand signs of a thumb alphabet. Finally, by tracking hand poses in a longer image sequence, the pose sequence is interpreted in terms of gestures. Dynamic Bayesian models and their inference methods (particle filter and Viterbi search) are applied at this stage, allowing a bi-driven control of the entire system.

Opis:
In this paper, an unsteady 2-D incompressible fluid flow with heat and mass transfer in a four-sided lid driven square cavity is investigated numerically. The top, bottom, left, and right walls of the square cavity move to the right, left, downward and upward respectively. All four sides of the cavity move with a uniform velocity. The flow variables are simulated below the critical Reynolds numbers with isothermal and mass-transfer conditions in the square cavity. We have used a streamfunction-vorticity (ψ - ξ) formulation to investigate the fluid flow in terms of flow variables ψ, ξ, T and C at low Reynolds numbers (Re). The Prandtl number (Pr) and Schmidt number (Sc) have been chosen as 6:62 and 10, 50, 100, 150 respectively, in order to calculate the numerical solutions of T and C. The matrix method has been used to evaluate the stability and convergence of the numerical scheme. The conditions obtained from the matrix method have been used to arrive at the numerical solutions with desired accuracy.
