The concept of different compositional biomass is introduced to enhance the binding properties and utilize the use of different seasonal biomasses. The effect of densification on the heating values of single pure and mixed compositional biomasses is observed with and without applying special type of pretreatment named as ‘Torrefaction’. The moisture contents and bulk densities were also calculated for these briquettes. The effects of average moisture contents and bulk density (which show the swelling nature) on the heating values are also observed. The experiments have been performed on the pelletizer equipment to form briquetted biomass and bomb calorimeter was used to determine the calorific values of different briquettes. Finally, the percentage decrease in the average moisture contents of different categories of torrefied briquettes from non-torrefied briquettes were also calculated and compared.

Opis:
This work was aimed at investigating the metal contents of ashed and unashed shell powders of snail (Achatina fulica). The snails were collected and treated according to the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM D482-91). Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe) in the ashed and unashed snail shell powder was determined. The result showed that the concentration of the metals in the unashed snail shell powder was higher than that of the ashed powder. The differences in the concentration of the metals was linked to the effect of ashing on the formation of silicates of the metals at high temperature (800 °C). At very high temperature, Ca (in the form of calcium carbonate) had very high concentration in both the ashed and unashed snail shell powder. This indicates that snail shell powder can be used as filler in paper industry to improve the paper opacity, or in the cosmetic industry as face powder.

Opis:
Pulses play an important role in Indian agriculture. Among the pulses, soybean (Glycine max. L) occupies a unique place by becoming the largest source of vegetable oil and protein. It is widely cultivated in India and occupy 5th largest production of soybean in the world. Industrialization and population explosion has caused a serious problem of pollution in the environment in all possible ways. As a result, most of the water resources are getting polluted by receiving large quantity of sewages and industrial wastewaters with heavy metals. In some places, these polluted water is being used for irrigation due to scarcity for good water. The continuous use of these wastewater containing heavy metals degraded the soil quality and reduced the growth and yield performance of agricultural crops. Aresenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, uranium, vanadium and zinc are the some of the important heavy metals found in our environment. Among the heavy metals, chromium merits a special reference for its toxic potential. It is released from the industries such as electroplating, leather tanning, textile printing and metal finishing. It is one of the main constitutions of tannery effluent. Presence of excess amount of chromium in the wastewater affect the plant growth and development when it is used for irrigation. So, Laboratory study was carried to investigate the irrigational impact of various concentrations of Cr (5, 10, 25, 50 100, 200 and 300 µg/l) on changes in morphological (germination percentage, root length, shoot length, fresh weight and dry weight), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid) biomolecules (aminoacid, protein, sugar, proline) and antioxidant enzymatic activities (catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and super oxide dismutase) were estimated. The accumulation of chromium in soybean seedlings were estimated and they were correlated with the above mentioned parameters.

Opis:
The author’s objective is to present the role of base contents for a statistical map and determine its desired features which would influence optimum perception of the main contents of the map. The article consists of two main parts. The first part discusses selection of cartographic projection. Presented recommendations could be summarized in a short conclusion that application of equal-area projections is the optimum solution. It results from the necessity of preserving correct spatial relations during the perception of the thematic map contents. It is recommended to show cartographic graticule on statistical maps, for it helps to recognize geometrical attributes of the map and plays the localizing role. The second part of the article concentrates on the issue of selection of base contents’ elements on statistical maps. Such selection depends on the method of presentation of the thematic contents of the map. Because of that the optimum contents of the map is discussed in the context of basic cartographic presentation methods, i.e. the dot method, the choropleth method, the diagram method and the isoline method. The role of base elements in the process of reading of the main contents is also underlined. It is shown that it is not only the localizing role. Including additional elements of base contents facilitates understanding of the spatial distribution of the phenomenon which is the main topic of the map. The article encourages extension of the contents of statistical maps by additional elements of contents, which, while keeping correct spatial relations, can improve the efficiency of map use.

Opis:
Local single cell microalgae isolated from a wastewater swamp and identified as Scenedesmus obliquus was used to determine its applicability for utilization of domestic wastewater for biomass and lipid production. Secondary treated domestic wastewater with or without mixing of growth medium was used to cultivate S. obliquus for the biomass and lipid production as a renewable feedstock for biodiesel. S. obliquus showed the highest OD when grown in 100% Bold’s basal medium (BBM). S. obliquus utilized 95.2% and 78.5% of P and N contents, respectively, when grown in 25% WW+75% BBM mixture and the utilization efficiency of both elements decreased with the increasing wastewater portion in the mixture. Although the BBM displayed the highest dry biomass and lipid production (25.15% of the cell dry biomass). The lowest values were recorded for the uninoculated wastewater, followed by 100% wastewater enriched with S. obliquus. The obtained data revealed that the lipid classes of S. obliquus differs according to the cultivation medium and conditions. The highest percentage of C16-C18 fatty acids (54.76% from total lipids) were recorded in case of algae cultivated in 100% wastewater, followed by 46.96% in case of 100% BBM medium. These results suggest the utilization of mixtures containing a higher portion of secondary treated wastewater, such as 75% WW+25% BBM or 50% WW+50% BBM, could increase the economical production of the lipid-rich microalgae S. obliquus for biodiesel through saving water and nutrients.

The publication presents test results for a Perkins 1104D - 44TA engine powered by SME sunflower oil fatty acids methyl esters. The SME biofuel was manufactured in-house using a GW-200 reactor at MCOŹE "BioEnergia". The test was carried out at an engine test stand at Kielce University of Technology's Heat Engine Laboratory. During the test the engine operated according to an external speed characteristic. The tests aimed to determine the impact of using an SME type biofuel to power the engine on the engine's primary performance indicator values. A slight decrease to the brake horsepower and torque of the tested engine powered by sunflower oil esters as compared to diesel was recorded. Fuel consumption of the engine powered by plant origin fuel also increased. No operating problems were experienced associated with powering the engine using sunflower oil esters during the tests.

Opis:
Testing of the fatigue strength along wood fibres at different moisture contents. The paper determines the effect of wood moisture content on the fatigue strength in compression along fibres. The method of determining the maximum stress at the proportional limit was used for the measurements. Fatigue strength was investigated for three wood species: pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), bearded birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L.), with two moisture contents: close to the absolutely dry state and above the fibre saturation point. The ratio of fatigue strength to short term strength depends on moisture content and is similar for birch (70.3% in the dry state and 72.1% in the wet state), for oak (67.4% and 69.5% in both states) and for spruce (66.6% in the dry state and 68.1% in the wet state). The moisture content of the wood clearly influences the fatigue strength of the wood. On average, the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents above the fibre saturation point constitutes about 0.20 of the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents close to 0%. This tendency was found regardless of the tested species. The simplified method for testing fatigue strength at the limit of proportionality has shown its limited usefulness, requiring further analysis and comparison with other methods in order to be thoroughly tested and possibly improved.
Wytrzymałość zmęczeniową zbadano dla trzech gatunków drewna: dębu szypułkowego (Quercus robur L.), brzozy brodawkowatej (Betula pendula Roth.) i świerka pospolitego (Picea abies L.), o dwóch wilgotnościach: zbliżonej do stanu absolutnie suchego i powyżej punkt nasycenia włókien. Uproszczona metoda badania wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej na granicy proporcjonalności wykazała swoją ograniczoną przydatność, wymagającą dalszej analizy i porównania z innymi metodami w celu dokładnego przetestowania i ewentualnego udoskonalenia.

Opis:
The vertical distribution of the total contents assayed by Dc-Arc ES analysis of 28 trace elements and 6 major elements measured by ICP-MS within 53 complete soil profiles in Lithuania are presented. Models of the soil profiles were created, each having the master soil horizons A, E, B and C. Median values of elements in the master horizons of different texture were used in place of missing samples, while aberrant samples were discarded. The absolute average deviation () was taken to measure the variability of the data subsets and thus to check the reliability of location of the element contents within the soil profile. Within the context of the different actions of the various soil-forming processes (podzolization, lessivage, gleyfication, humification and so on) the general patterns of vertical element distribution were revealed. Element depletion is dominant in the soils of Lithuania. Themost easily removed are the alkaline elements Ca and Mg, while U, B, Th, As, Co, Cr, Sr, Y, Mo, La, Sc, Yb, Ti, P and K are depleted through the whole soil profile. Ag, Pb, Sn and Mn were defined as the accumulative elements in the surface A-horizon and might be influenced by anthropogenic or biogenic processes. A relative accumulation of Zr, Ba and Nb was observed in the surface A-horizon, and this seems to be related to the weathering of resistant minerals. Levels of Fe, Li, Al, V, Zn, Ga, Ni, Cu and Rb were ascribed to elements precipitated in the soil illuvial B-horizon due to soil formation processes. Na, K, Sr, B, U, As, Co Rb and Yb were found to be the most immobile elements within typical soil profiles, while Ag, Zn, Sc, Ba, Cu, Zr, Fe La, Th and Ca are themostmobile elements and affected by a variety of natural and human factors.
