Opis:
Currently, the territory of the Republic of Poland faces a growing threat of contamination with its sources in catastrophes and technical failures in industrial plants (including nuclear power plants) and uncontrolled release of high-toxic chemicals during transport and, which cannot be excluded, terrorism. The increased level of threat resulting from, among others, those factors caused that the National Contamination Detection and Alerting Systems (KSWiA) with the Contamination Detection System of the Polish Armed Forces as the system coordinator was established in the Republic of Poland in 2006. This paper presents the outline of the aerial system of contamination detection, mainly its technical elements, based on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) carrying on board basic and special-purpose equipment. The elementary way of operating the system while performing tasks as well as requirements for its maintenance and handling have been proposed. Introduction of UAV systems would greatly increase the effectiveness of the Contamination Detection System of the Polish Armed Forces, but also other civilian functional subsystems of KSWSiA. There are many advantages to using them, such as no need to expose personnel to contamination and an enemy impact, high mobility, maneuverability and the capability to operate under difficult terrain conditions.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the suitability of two methods enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) used for detection of defatted soybean powder. We have analysed 20 artificially contaminated samples prepared by simple dilution with wheat flour. Sample one was prepared as a combination of l g of defatted soybean powder with l g of wheat flour. Sample has been homogenized by vortexing. Next sample was prepared as combination of one gram of previous sample and l g of wheat flour. According to this methodology all twenty samples were prepared. Detection of defatted soybean powder in artificially contaminated samples has been performed using both methods. We detected significant differences between both used methods. We were able to detect presence of defatted soybean powder in artificially contaminated samples with using of both methods. Wheat flour contamination by defatted soybean powder was detected at least in sample 13 (0.012 %/122 mg - kg-1) by PCR method. Defatted soybean powder was not detected in samples 14 up to 20. Samples from 1 to 10 have not been quantified because absorbance values ranged above detection limit. Samples from 11 to 20 were quantified, but only measured values of sample 16, 17 and 18 were in the guaranteed quantification range provided by ELISA kit manual. We have detected defatted soybean powder contamination in samples 19 and 20 but absorbance values were highly similar to absorbance of the control sample.
Celem badań było porównanie możliwości zastosowania metod ELISA i PCR do detekcji odtłuszczonej mąki sojowej. Przeanalizowano 20 sztucznie zanieczyszczonych próbek mąki pszennej. Próbka pierwsza została przygotowana poprzez zmieszanie l g odtłuszczonej mąki sojowej z l g mąki pszennej. Próbka ta została zhomogenizowana przez wirowanie. Następną próbkę przygotowano przez zmieszanie l g próbki pierwszej z l g mąki pszennej. W ten sposób przygotowano 20 próbek o zmniejszającej się zwartości mąki sojowej. Obydwie metody, tj.

Opis:
The coliform group has been used extensively as an indicator of water quality and has historically led to the public health protection concept. Total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, for example in soil or vegetation, as well as the intestines of mammals, including humans. Total coliform bacteria are not likely to cause illness, but their presence indicates that the water supply may be vulnerable to contamination by more harmful microorganisms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the only member of the total coliform group of bacteria that is found only in the intestines of mammals, including humans. The presence of E. coli in water indicates recent fecal contamination and may indicate the possible presence of disease-causing pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Although most strains of E. coli bacteria are harmless, certain strains, such as E.coli 0157:H7, may cause illness. About 80 % of communicable diseases in the world are waterborne. According to WHO estimate about 80 % of water pollution in developing country, like India is carried by domestic waste. In India 70 % of the water is seriously polluted and 75 % of illness and 80 % of the child mortality is attributed to water pollution. The improper management of water systems may cause serious problems in availability and quality of water. The major pathogenic bacteria responsible for water borne disease are spread by the faeco-oral route, in which water may play an intermediate role. The aim of this review is to examine methods currently in use for the detection of coliforms in drinking water and also to evaluate the possible health hazards associated with drinking water contaminated with coliforms.

Opis:
A spectrum of low-frequency (20‒30 Hz) amplitude fluctuations of the ultrasonic (10 MHz) signal specularly scattered from water surfaces covered with monomolecular and thicker crude oil origin films of well-defined, oceanographically relevant viscoelastic properties was examined in laboratory and at-sea conditions. The relationship between the Surface water wave (30 Hz) damping coefficient and the oil layer thickness was established, and compared to the one predicted by the classical Stokes theory. The depression of the spectral energy density of wind-driven waves by surface films was inferred from the ratio of acoustic signal fluctuations spectra with/without films, and compared to that resulting from the Marangoni damping theory applicable to monolayers of particular surface viscoelasticity. The agreement between the theory and experimental data was satisfactory. As shown in at-sea experiments performed with a free-floating, buoy-like acoustic system, and an artificial oil slick spread over the Baltic Sea surface, the film’s rheological Surface properties can be recovered from acoustic surface probing, as well as oil spill edge detection. Simultaneous statistical analyses of the scattered signal amplitude distribution parameters turned out to be unequivocally related to the oil substance fraction weight, oil layer thickness, and the form of oil contamination.
