Regional economic integration initiatives has been prospect of enhanced economic growth in South African construction industry. The impact of regional economic integration and globalization on construction industries in South Africa is evidenced by the decreasing market share of the local players in the industry. Developing countries need to institute radical reforms in their development agenda in order to leapfrog, and bridge this difference. That is why increase in foreign participation in construction activities in South Africa, cross border strategic alliances, technology transfer are some impact of Regional economic integration on the industry. The aim of this paper is to understand the term ' Regional economic integration ' and to study its impact on South African construction industry and the lessons to be learnt by other African construction industries. Its objectives include investigating the positive impacts on the Construction Industry, discussing the Regional economic integration in southern African i.e. SACU and SADC; identifying the some lessons from it. These will be briefly discussed mainly by exploring the literature and throwing light on the views of people who investigated and wrote in this field. The paper ends with conclusions and recommendations, stressing the need for improvement on other construction industries in Africa participation in Regional economic integration, in related to lessons South African construction industry.

Introduction/background: This article presents the functioning of a production company in the construction chemicals industry. Based on the literature research, the following thesis was formulated: the use of tools to improve logistics processes significantly improves and increases the efficiency of production processes in the analysed enterprise. In the article, the following issues were indicated: analysing the course of logistics and production processes in the analysed enterprise, developing a map of the production implementation process and the products on Line retooling process, analysing the possibilities of implementing tools to improve logistics and production processes and developing recommendations for the enterprise. Aim of the paper: The main purpose of the study is to identify irregularities in the implementation of logistic processes in the examined enterprise and to propose improvement measures. Materials and methods: In the research part, the authors proposed Lean Production improvement tools (SMED, TPM) to optimize logistics processes and production. Results and conclusions: The work created by the authors is a research article that includes a full analysis of the production and logistics processes of a company from the construction industry. The paper presents irregularities occurring during logistics and production processes, and proposes improvements. The authors argue that it is important to introduce the proposed improvements to optimize logistics processes and production, and that they are possible to implement in other manufacturing companies.

The purpose of the paper is to analyse the competitiveness of the largest enterprises of the construction industry operating in Podlaskie Voivodeship, against the background of other firms from the sector in the years 2010–2012. The analysis uses the so-called Nagashima's radar, which enables a synthetic depiction of the relative changes of selected sets of indicators concerning the analysed entities from the construction industry. The conducted research into the analysis of competitiveness of largest construction companies of Podlaskie, as compared with the rest of the sector, reveals that the period 2010–2012 saw both increases and decreased in the indicators regarding the profitability, financial stability, capital activity, growth, and efficiency of the studied companies. In 2012, in comparison with the preceding year, a downturn was observed in e.g.: some of the profitability indicators, growth indicators, and labour efficiency indicators.

Cost estimating techniques are approaches towards delivering reliable estimates for any projects or endeavour. However, the usage of the different estimating techniques available depends on prevailing circumstances revolving around such project while the reliability and accuracy of each of the estimating techniques quite differ from each other. This study had through literature review identified six (6) electrical cost estimating methods and through a structured questionnaire assessed the causal factors influencing the usage of the six estimating methods. Data were retrieved from 80 respondents and analysed. The results of the study indicate the most critical causal factors as incomplete details in electrical working drawings, the absence of electrical design drawings and unclear/ambiguous electrical specifications. The study also proffered probable solutions to five of the most critical causal factors. In addition, site-observed productivity constants of electrical technicians at three different residential project sites were obtained which will serve as a valuable cost tool for estimators when carrying out electrical cost estimating jobs. The findings of the research have considerable implications for the education, training and practice of estimators in the construction industry.

Purpose: In India, the cost of manpower is very low; hence Manual Material Handling (MMH) is the cheapest solution. This study aimed to quantify the cardiac strain and postural stress of male building construction workers associated with MMH tasks. Materials and methods: Mean (SD) age (years) and job experience (years) of the workers were 31.0(4.65) and 8.8 (3.23), respectively (n=35). Working peak heart rate was recorded by polar heart rate monitor, posture analysis was done by the Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, body part discomfort was assessed by the Nordic questionnaire, and perceived exertion was evaluated by the Borg scale. Two-tailed unpaired Student’s t test was performed between peak heart rate of workers associated with MMH tasks and upper extremity intensive tasks (n=31). Results: Results revealed that mean peak heart rate of the workers was significantly different (higher) compared with that of the upper extremity intensive workers (p<0.05). This study showed that most of the working postures were hazardous. The magnitude of risk for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) was much higher as per REBA compared with OWAS. Most of the workers suffered from pain in the head, neck, shoulder, lower back, and arm region. As per the Borg scale, the rate of perceived exertion was ‘hard and heavy’ among most of the workers (68.57%). Conclusions: Postural stress and cardiac strain beyond the safe limit indicates the heavy nature of the job. Load limit optimization, ergonomic lifting technique, and rescheduled work-rest cycle are essential to reducing physiological and perceived work load.

To cope with large-scale construction projects consortia are widely used. Yet they entail opportunities and risks. In order to evaluate the motivation and hindering factors to found a consortium, which are mentioned in literature, a survey of German construction companies was carried out. The result is that motivational factors are higher rated than the hindering ones. Another influence on a successful consortium, respectively the opportunities and risks, is the choice of partners. This influence was also surveyed and evaluated. None of the given criteria was assessed as unimportant. The conclusion can be drawn that the success of a consortium is highly dependent on the right choice of partners, which can increase the opportunities and decrease the risks.
Przy realizacji projektów budowlanych na dużą skalę bardzo często wykorzystuje się konsorcja. Aby oceniać motywację i czynniki utrudniające funkcjopnowanie konsorcjum, o których wspomina się w literaturze, przeprowadzono badania niemieckich przedsiębiorstw budowlanych. Z badań wynika, że motywacyjne czynniki są najważniejsze. Inny wpływ na udane konsorcjum mają odpowiednio okazje i analiza ryzyka. Żadne z danych kryteriów nie zostało ocenione jak mało ważne. Z badań wynika, że sukces konsorcjum jest bardzo zależny od trafnego wyboru partnerów.

The production performance of mining and also construction equipment (like haul trucks, excavators, loaders, crushing and screening equipment) depends on its availability and utilisation states. Thus, it is necessary to determine the mean availability and structure utilisation of machinery systems with the aim to improve the same. At the same time, a detailed analysis of machinery operation data can result in a more effective management of mining plant operations and the mining process itself. Determination of operational state indices and their individual components allows to start preventive actions, resulting in the improvement of the organisation of work of the entire mine machinery system. Moreover, the future technical state of machines operated in surface mining is closely related to the current state and depends also on the events that have occurred in the extraction system. The analysis of dependability parameters can have a significant impact on decision-making, related both to the processes of use and maintenance, and, primarily, to all main operational processes of the mine. Different mines follow different terms and maintain different information. The only common information in most of them concerns the availability and utilisation of mining and construction equipment, which might be useful. There is a need to develop proper feedback and to define terms, factors and indices related to mining equipment. Below follows an analysis of selected operational parameters and the mean availability in the process of using the mining and construction equipment. This type of analyses help determine the operational potential of every element in the engineering system, understood as the ability to perform work processes. The analyses also illustrate how the reliability parameters change with the durability of the operated machinery. This makes it possible to identify the machines with the highest and lowest damage rates and such analyses can form the basis for the creation of optimised machine systems.

Preventing cracks in concrete is a critical issue in the construction industry. The self-healing concrete phenomenon can be a good solution for mitigating cracks in concrete without any direct intervention. Construction industry researchers are developing many different self-healing concrete materials using a variety of sub-materials and techniques. This research project investigates self-healing concrete applications that use various cementitious materials, such as fly ash, slag, and polymeric materials, which can easily be applied in the construction industry. To present this application, experimental tests on different concrete mixes have been conducted using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity and compression tests. For this experimental study, samples were placed under various environmental conditions, such as water-saturation and frozen temperatures. The results of the investigation are detailed and discussed in the study. The graphs illustrate behavioral differences between fly ash, slag, and polymeric materials. Based on the experimental results, healing capacity existed in all mixture types in the saturated and frozen environments. In the results, samples were characterized by good mechanical properties represented by damage resistance, aggregate/mortar adhesion, and compressive strength.
Zapobieganie pęknięciom betonu to kluczowa kwestia w branży budowlanej. Zjawisko samonaprawiającego się betonu może być dobrym rozwiązaniem do łagodzenia pęknięć w betonie bez jakiejkolwiek bezpośredniej interwencji. Badacze z branży budowlanej opracowują wiele różnych samonaprawiających się materiałów betonowych z użyciem różnych materiałów i technik. Zaprezentowany projekt bada zastosowania samonaprawiającego się betonu, który wykorzystuje różne materiały cementowe, takie jak popiół lotny, żużel i materiały polimerowe, które można łatwo zastosować w przemyśle budowlanym. Aby przedstawić tę aplikację, przeprowadzono testy eksperymentalne na różnych mieszankach betonowych z użyciem ultradźwiękowych testów prędkości impulsu i ściskania. W tym badaniu eksperymentalnym próbki umieszczono w różnych warunkach środowiskowych, takich jak nasycenie wodą i przemarzanie. Wyniki badania szczegółowo omówiono w artykule. Wykresy ilustrują różnice behawioralne między popiołem lotnym, żużlem i materiałami polimerowymi. Na podstawie wyników eksperymentów stwierdzono, że wszystkie rodzaje mieszanin w środowiskach nasyconych i zamarzniętych miały zdolność regeneracji. W uzyskanych wynikach próbki charakteryzowały się dobrymi właściwościami mechanicznymi reprezentowanymi przez odporność na uszkodzenia, przyczepność kruszywa do zaprawy oraz wytrzymałość na ściskanie.

Introduction/background: The success of project management depends on a number of factors, and identifying and addressing them in the project management process increases the chance of success. New industrial, residential, or road construction projects are driving the growth of the construction industry. Construction projects are associated not only with the creation of new facilities and expansion of infrastructure, but also with the modernization of existing facilities, and their implementation takes place in a changing and turbulent environment. The above makes it important, especially in times of crisis and uncertainty, to identify factors associated with achieving success when managing these projects. Aim of the paper: Identification and analysis of key success factors in project management in a selected construction company. Materials and methods: To identify and analyse key success factors in construction industry project management, a diagnostic survey was conducted using a survey questionnaire. The survey was conducted among project team members working on construction industry projects in the selected entity. Results and conclusions: Success factors do not represent a universal set that will contribute to the success of every implemented project. On the basis of the empirical research carried out, a list of key success factors in construction industry project management was created, i.e. those factors that contribute most to success in this type of project. Furthermore, on the basis of the empirical research carried out, recommendations were developed for the management of projects in the selected entity, with particular attention paid to identified factors.

Consumer demand has a key impact on the development prospects of the national economy, and the construction sector accounts for a significant share in the structure of Polish GDP. The period of crisis is a special environment conditioning social behaviour and, at the same time, the first stage of the new business cycle. Understanding the social reactions prevailing in this phase influences the forecasting of further parts of the cycle. The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of the economic environment conditioned by the COVID-19 epidemic on the behaviour of residential real estate buyers. In order to achieve the goal, empirical non-reactive and survey research were carried out. The obtained results show why flats in Poland are perceived as a safe form of investment and provide a helpful tool for forecasting the future of the Polish housing market.
Popyt konsumpcyjny ma kluczowy wpływ na perspektywy rozwoju gospodarki krajowej, a sektor budowlany stanowi znaczny udział w strukturze polskiego PKB. Okres kryzysu jest szczególnym środowiskiem warunkującym zachowania społeczne i zarazem pierwszym etapem nowego cyklu koniunkturalnego. Identyfikacja reakcji społecznych panujących w tej fazie rzutuje na prognozowanie dalszych części cyklu. Celem badań było przeanalizowanie wpływu środowiska gospodarczego uwarunkowanego epidemią COVID-19 na zachowania nabywców nieruchomości mieszkaniowych. Aby osiągnąć cel, wykonano badania empiryczne niereaktywne i sondażowe. Uzyskane rezultaty wskazują, dlaczego w Polsce mieszkania postrzega się jako bezpieczną formę inwestycji, oraz stanowią pomocne narzędzie do prognozowania przyszłości polskiego rynku mieszkaniowego.

The paper presents the features of the construction industry and the ways of organising investment processes, as well as the methods for the valuation of the services implemented within its scope. The individual valuation methods were assigned to the applicable provisions of Polish balance sheet law and the International Financial Reporting Standard No 15 “Revenues from contracts with customers” in force since 2018. On the basis of a practical example, there was illustrated the achieved financial result of a company providing installation services as a subcontractor in view of all the possible valuation methods. The author presented and evaluated the anticipated effects of the new standard’s entry into force, and in conclusion presented a selection of the valuation methods for the services performed in this industry, which is complicated and has a decisive impact on the amount of profits and losses of the financial results presented in the account.

The possibility of construction disputes can be reduced, but they cannot be avoided due to the uncertain and risky nature of the building industry. Conflicts between construction parties often have very unfavourable effects, such as cost increases, poor construction quality and time extension in the schedule. Lots of studies have been carried out in order to try and avoid these disagreements. However, there are no common resolution tools or techniques due to the improving conditions and scope of contracted works. Advanced methods and dispute reasons should be fully monitored and updated for the applicable solutions. This paper discusses the current major constructional dispute reasons in Turkey. The questionnaire method was applied within the scope of this study. The questionnaire documents were randomly distributed to 80 contractors to analyse major dispute reasons in Turkey. Analysis of the questionnaire results indicates that the major current dispute causes are poor quality of performed works, delays in progress payments, inefficient site management, poorly written contracts and design mistakes.
Prawdopodobieństwo sporów budowlanych może zostać obniżone, jednakże nie można ich uniknąć, ze względu na niepewną i ryzykowną naturę przemysłu budowlanego. Konflikty pomiędzy stronami inwestycji często mają bardzo niekorzystny wpływ, taki jak wzrost kosztów, słaba jakość konstrukcji oraz wydłużenia czasowe w harmonogramie. W celu uniknięcia tych nieporozumień, przeprowadzono wiele badań. Jednakże, nie ma wspólnych narzędzi lub technik rozwiązywania tych problemów, ze względu na poprawiające się warunki oraz zakres prac budowlanych. Metody zaawansowane oraz powody sporów powinny być w pełni monitorowane i aktualizowane pod kątem stosownych rozwiązań. Niniejsza praca omawia obecne, główne powody sporów budowlanych w Turcji. W zakresie niniejszej pracy zastosowano metodę ankietowania.
