Opis:
Realising that human geography has been defined less by its canonical works but rather by its canonical concepts, the current status of the concept ‘rural’ puts a question mark over progress in human geography in terms of how well we have been able to adapt knowledge to reciprocate with societal change at large. As one of the oldest geographical concepts still in widespread use, ‘rural’ stands in stark contrast to the immense changes encountered by the society during the last century, let alone decades. And while this problem has been approached both empirically and philosophically, not enough stress has been put on the cognitive and sociological processes that have governed the attainment and retention of ‘rural’ in science, and beyond. In this vein, the aim of this paper is to provide a structured argument for facilitating a view of ‘rural’ less as a geographical space and more as a concept purportedly thought to define such space by way of inculcation.

In recent years, FCA has received significant attention from research communities of various fields. Further, the theory of FCA is being extended into different frontiers and augmented with other knowledge representation frameworks. In this backdrop, this paper aims to provide an understanding of the necessary mathematical background for each extension of FCA like FCA with granular computing, a fuzzy setting, interval-valued, possibility theory, triadic, factor concepts and handling incomplete data. Subsequently, the paper illustrates emerging trends for each extension with applications. To this end, we summarize more than 350 recent (published after 2011) research papers indexed in Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Scopus, SpringerLink, and a few authoritative fundamental papers.

Opis:
Purpose: To understand the concept of empathy by nurses, get to know the importance of empathy in performance the work of a nurse and to determine the ability of empathy among nurses. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 100 nurses (females and males) working in hospitals and clinics in Mazovia province. The control group consisted of 100 persons engaged in office work. A diagnostic survey method was used in the research. The research tools were: Davis’ Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Emotional Control Scale and a questionnaire prepared by the team concerning the concept of empathy in the opinion of nurses and presenting their opinion on the importance of empathy in personal contact with the patient. Results: The level of knowledge on empathy among nurses is on the average level. The average score on this scale was 17.35 (SD=3.40). Almost 85% of the respondents claimed that empathy is equal with compassion shown to the other person - the patient. Empathy was often confused with the show of compassion. There are significant differences between the level of empathy of nurses and the control group. The differences relate to the results in the scale of perspective-taking and the scale of empathic concern. Nurses often are able to feel the experience of others, and appear to concern the other (p<0.05). Understanding empathy is associated with more frequent displaying the feeling of anger. This is a positive feature, because those people had a better self-awareness and their experiences, including anger. They could express it on the outside, usually in the socially acceptable way. It was similar with those who were convinced of the positive impact of experiencing emotions during the healing process. Conclusions: Empathy is a positive factor influencing the quality of conducted nursing work. Steps should be taken to introduce workshops of interpersonal skills as a module in the nurses’ training course

Opis:
Although spirituality is a popular subject of research in many fields of science about man today, there still are problems with defining it. Their causes, at least in psychology, though unfounded, include distortions reflecting the scientist’s personal bias: apologetic on the one hand and anti-fideist on the other. Bias of the first type often stems from the beliefs, held by the author of a given concept, that go beyond the paradigm of science. This refers to two concepts recognizing the existence of the spiritual dimension of the human being as substantially different from the psychological dimension: V. E. Frankl’s logotheory, being a concept of the spiritual dimension as the source of the need for meaning, and D. Helminiak’s concept, according to which spirituality is the realization of the principle of authentic transcendence of the self. Such concepts are referred to as explicit. However, there are also explicit concepts of spirituality acceptable in academic psychology; the described example is the concept of spirituality developed by J. Averill. Bias of the second type dominated Western psychology for a long time. It may be the cause for the term “spirituality” not being used by the authors of the concepts whose distinctive features appear in this article. These are the implicit concepts of spirituality. Their three examples are: Terror Management Theory (developed by T. Pyszczyński, J. Greenberg, and S. Solomon), the Meaning Maintenance Model (authored mainly by T. Proulx and S. Heine), and Józef Kozielecki’s transgressive concept of man. They include similar elements, but the transgressive concept appears to be the most useful. The conclusion contains proposals of research using the ideas of meaning, coping with absurdity, and the form of transgression as ones that lead to spiritual transformation.

The subject of this article are the linguistic means used to form the image-concept “Russia”. Corpus content analysis on the wide range material of the British print and electronic press for 2017-2019 is the base for constructing the nominative field with the core and near, far and final peripheries of image ”Russia”. The conceptual analysis revealed verbal means used for expansion of the concept volume and its component layers- metaphorical, nominative, evaluative and associative. These devices create the negative image-concept of state Russia in British public consciousness.

The article presents the results of research carried out in the 2016/2017 school year in selected primary schools in an urban environment (Łódź). The aim of the study was to diagnose the ways of understanding the abstract concept of the horizon, in groups of 8- to 9-year-olds and 9- to 10-year-old children. The research was carried out in a venue that provided a natural learning environment (in two second grade classes and two third grade classes). The research adopted the strategy of didactic intervention. The researcher acted as an observer and a participant, and the research material came from participatory observation. The observation covered both the activities of pupils as well as the effects of these activities. The research material obtained in the course of conversations with children and their artistic activity was analyzed. The research results reconstructed the children’s process of understanding the concept of the horizon and revealed possibilities of enriching educational discourse.

The formal concept analysis gives a mathematical definition of a formal concept. However, in many real-life applications, the problem under investigation cannot be described by formal concepts. Such concepts are called the non-definable concepts (Saquer and Deogun, 2000b). The process of finding formal concepts that best describe non-definable concepts is called the concept approximation. In this paper, we present two different approaches to the concept approximation. The first approach is based on rough set theory while the other is based on a similarity measure. We present algorithms for the two approaches.

The article presents an attempt at an empirical analysis of the relation between self-concept differentiation and the sense of identity. Patricia Linville’s concept of self-complexity and a multidimensional approach to the sense of identity have been used. The hypothesized relations of these structural characteristics of personality with self-esteem have been analyzed as well. Research results indicate no connections of self-complexity with the sense of consistency, stability, separateness, accessibility of identity content, or self-esteem. However, cluster analysis revealed the presence of three groups with characteristic combinations of identity and self-complexity dimensions as well as different self-esteem levels. The psychological significance of these differences is discussed.

A potential theory approach to an algorithm of conceptual space partitioningThis paper proposes a new classification algorithm for the partitioning of a conceptual space. All the algorithms which have been used until now have mostly been based on the theory of Voronoi diagrams. This paper proposes an approach based on potential theory, with the criteria for measuring similarities between objects in the conceptual space being based on the Newtonian potential function. The notion of a fuzzy prototype, which generalizes the previous definition of a prototype, is introduced. Furthermore, the necessary conditions that a natural concept must meet are discussed. Instead of convexity, as proposed by Gärdenfors, the notion of geodesically convex sets is used. Thus, if a concept corresponds to a set which is geodesically convex, it is a natural concept. This definition applies, for example, if the conceptual space is an Euclidean space. As a by-product of the construction of the algorithm, an extension of the conceptual space to d-dimensional Riemannian manifolds is obtained.

In addition to selected personality dimensions, our paper focuses also on gender relations of the adolescent school-related self-concept. The research sample was made up of grammar school and university students (N = 100). The five-factor model of personality NEO-FFI (P.T. Costa, R.R. McCrae) and SCEA-M questionnaire (U. Engler, W.U. Meyer) were used as research tools. The results show a statistically significant relationship between neuroticism and fear of social consequences. There is also a statistically significant relationship between conscientiousness and the self-concept of ability. Statistically significant gender differences in favour of women appear in the dimension of fear of social consequences.

The paper concentrates on knowledge from the perspective of constructivism. We review several concepts (Dewey, Gordon, Bruner and others), with an emphasis on those for whom understanding knowledge is crucial and who focus their attention not so much on the external manifestations of student activity but on their mental significance and the processes involved. The discussion presented in the paper is of a theoretical nature, while the analysis of knowledge is not conducted from the psychological (individualized) perspective, but exposes the social consequences of education. Thus, the analysis does not deal with the mind as such, but what the school system does with students’ minds and what consequences this may have. As a result of the analysis undertaken the paper is in two parts. The first part reflects the approach of teachers to knowledge when pragmatic constructivism is the point of reference. The second presents knowledge from the learner’s perspective, as a participant in the educational process. Finally, the conclusions list the social consequences of education derived from specific (positivist/anti-positivist) concepts of knowledge.

The study works on the optimization of minimum apartment model for 1-2 occupants that could meet contemporary standards. The study has proved that the original layout of the apartment can be improved to bring it closer to contemporary requirements. It turned out that improvements and changes mainly concerned dimensions and arrangement of the kitchen and bathroom. Theliving space could also be modified – good results have been obtained by implementing innovative details. The last simulation performed in the research (purely hypothetical) showed that the best optimization result could be obtained by slightly enlarging the basic plan of the apartment.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the academic discussion on the proper understanding of the notions of responsibility and innovation. In recent years, the field of Responsible Research and Innovation has grown rapidly among academia and received considerable attention. One area of focus concerns the proper understanding of the notion of the terms themselves. They are especially problematic in light of the critique that the subject has already received (cf. Blok, Lemmens 2015). This article provides an answer to that critique and proposes an alternative approach to the notions discussed. On the one hand, it outlines the so called ambivalued notion of innovation (cf. Kawalec 2015) and on the other, it presents a four-point characteristic of responsibility relevant to the field of research and innovation. In the text, the term responsibility should be understood as collective, future-oriented, socio-political, and values-oriented.
