Opis:
Comparison of populations is one of the most important problems in statistics. The most common comparisons apply to two populations, but comparisons of k populations, where k > 2 are also carried out. Parametric methods allow to compare the means, variances or proportions. The non-parametric methods allow to compare the distributions of two or more populations. The problem of comparison structures based on data in contingency tables is analyzed in the paper. The permutation tests were applied in the multivariate nominal data structure comparison.

Opis:
Statistical analyses in economics are often based on explaining the phenomena by comparing time series. The purpose of such types of analyses is to find out the similarity and schematic behavior of phenomena which appear in the data. Usual time series are compared with the use of a different similarity measure which, in accordance with the literature, could be divided into four categories. In this article, I propose a method that allows to indicate whether two time series are generated by the same stochastic processes. For this purpose, I analyze a method based on a permutation test. The idea of this test is much simpler than the tests based on theoretical distributions. I also conducted a simulation analysis based on the data generated according to different scenarios, subsequently comparing the results of that analysis.

Opis:
The scientific objective of the study was to identify factors modifying the eye movements observed during the performance of mental rotation tasks. On the one hand, differences were sought in indicators concerning eye movements between the phases of the perception of an object in the original and rotated positions; on the other hand, the study tested the influence of object complexity on the strength of similarity between perception and visualization in terms of the times of eye fixation in corresponding regions of interest. The results showed longer mean fixation times as well as a lower number and frequency of eye fixations when visualizing objects compared to viewing them. It can therefore be concluded that mental images required longer and deeper data processing than viewed objects did. The similarity of perception and visualization in terms of visual fixation times in corresponding regions of interest was stronger for simple objects than for complex ones. Moreover, it was demonstrated that for larger rotation angles the number of fixations was higher and their frequency was lower compared to smaller angles, which suggests an increase in perceived task difficulty and an increase in cognitive engagement with the increase in rotation angle.

Opis:
Reliable comparison of optimization algorithms requires the use of specialized benchmarking procedures. This paper highlights motivations which influence their structure, discusses evaluation criteria of algorithms, typical ways of presenting and interpreting results as well as related statistical procedures. Discussions are based on examples from CEC and BBOB benchmarks. Moreover, attention is drawn to these features of comparison procedures, which make them susceptible to manipulation. In particular, novel application of the weak axiom of revealed preferences to the field of benchmarking shows why it may be misleading to assess algorithms on basis of their ranks for each of test problems. Additionally, an idea is presented of developing massively parallel implementation of benchmarks. Not only would this provide faster computation but also open the door to improving reliability of benchmarking procedures and promoting research into parallel implementations of optimization algorithms.

Opis:
Statisticians are constantly looking for methods of statistical inference that would be both effective and would require meeting as few assumptions as possible. Permutation tests seem to fit here, as using them makes it possible to perform statistical inference in situations where classical parametric tests do not work. Permutation tests appear to be comparably powerful to parametric tests, but require meeting fewer assumptions, e.g. regarding the size of the sample or the from of distribution of the tested variable in a population. The presented tests make it possible to verify the overall hypothesis about the identity of both location and scale parameters in the studied populations. In literature, the Lepage test and the Cucconi test are most often referred to in this context. The paper considers various forms of test statistics, and presents a simulation study carried out to determine the size and power of the tests under normality. As the study demonstrated, the advantage of the proposed method is that it can be applied to small-size samples. A nonparametric, complex procedure was used to assess the overall ASL (achieved significance level) value by applying the permutation principle. For comparative purposes, the results for the permutation Lepage test and the permutation Cucconi test are also presented.

Opis:
Recognising and understanding the difficulties, which students show at different levels of teaching mathematics, can result in increased effectiveness of teaching. In this article, difficulties of students from the second to the fifth grade of primary school are analysed, revealed while they were solving tasks regarding differential comparison. Those difficulties, seemingly related to a relatively easy subject, make one realise how complex the process of learning mathematics is. The problem of differential comparison is only an example aimed at illustrating what impact previous experiences of a student have on the formation of pieces of their new knowledge.

Opis:
The article attempts to discuss some aspects of the impact of performance on the con¬ceptual distinctions concerning art. This issue is very broad, which is why the starting point is the achievements of performers from the 1970s, when the concern with the theoretical context was particularly visible. At the beginning, the views of the participants of the international conference I am organized in Warsaw in 1978 are analyzed, and later texts by Rosalind Krauss and Anne M. Wagner, referring to various activities of Vito Acconci. The article concludes with an attempt to confront the theoretical consequences of sculptures and performances by Robert Morris. Contemporary attempts at confronting artistic fields may evoke associations with the Renaissan¬ce concept of art competition (paragon), but they have a different purpose. The current situation of art is characterized by its indeterminacy. It escapes generalized approaches. However, I belie¬ve that an analysis of partial analogies and differences may prove to be an important justification for maintaining the concept of ‘art’.
