Opis:
This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of multicultural-based digital comic media on the social care character of elementary school students. This study used a quantitative research approach with the type of Quasi Experiment. The trial involved 2 classes, namely IVA (control class) and IVB (experiment class) of Brajan State Elementary School, containing 20 students. The independent t-test shows a difference in social-caring character between students who use multicultural-based digital comic media during the learning process and those who do not use multicultural-based digital comic media, with a significance value (p) less than 0.05, which is 0.017. This study concludes that multicultural- based digital comic media is declared effective to be used to improve the social care character of grade IV elementary school students.

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the issue of movies and comic books relationship. Nowadays we can see numerous cinematic versions of graphic novels. Especially what is so called „super hero movies”. Historical development of both movies and comic books was the same. There were several thematic borrow-ings. Also popular culture had significant influence on these media. It is possible among movies and graphic novels to distinguish inspiration, adaptation and screening. Comic book movies are not a new phenomenon. But its character seems a bit morę complicated.

This study examined the use of Pixton for enhancing grammar and vocabulary teaching in a public high school in the South region of Ecuador. In this intervention, 163 junior high school learners and 14 pre-service English teachers participated during a period of 4 months. The data for this study was obtained by gathering information from pre and post-questionnaires, pre and post-tests, and observation sheets. Students were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group (78 students) received English lessons without using Pixton, while the experimental group (85 students) used Pixton. After analyzing the data quantitatively and qualitatively, the results indicate that Pixton is an effective teaching tool that motivates students to learn grammar and vocabulary in an enjoyable way; this was evident through an improvement in students’ post-test scores in the experimental group.

Opis:
A piece of work that requires the interplay of at least two different codes, e.g. written text and elements of design, is a multimodal text (Serafini 2011, 342). These include short or feature films, video games and comic books. The focus of this paper is comics, the non-interactive texts that, nevertheless, need a reader to be vivified (McCloud 1994, 36-37); a flexible platform for new ways of expression which often provides formidable challenges upon translation.Comic books, often referred to as graphic novels, have become a respected literary form often compared to novels rather than pulp fiction which they used to be classified as. Their growing cultural relevance and increasing recognition shift the gravity of choices made by translators working with these texts. Comics often take on much-debated themes, such as gender, feminism or postcolonial issues; that adds to the importance of comics in a current pop-cultural discourse.Nonetheless, the most unique aspect of these texts is their form, which incorporates static visual images organised “in deliberate sequence” (ibid., 7-9) and text. Even though there are instances of comics with no text, it usually is present; without the imagery, however, it makes little or no sense and vice versa. Moreover, the connection between text and image as well as between the images themselves may be intricate and multilayered, making it even more challenging for translators to tackle.Drawing on examples from classics such as Maus, V for Vendetta, Peanuts and the Asterix series, this paper expands on the aforementioned translation issues and underlines the cultural significance of comic books and graphic novels.

Beyond teaching practices that have treated comics and graphic novels principally as instruments of promoting reading until now, this article points out the multimodality and own aesthetic of this media. It therefore inquires more precisely into what a suitable multimodal aesthetic reception might look like in secondary school, that avoids a technologically determinative functional development and relates reading, writing, and designing to each other operationally. To this end, (previous) comprehension models for text-picture-integration are brought into focus, with reference to select findings on the research-based didactics of writing. This is supplemented by explorative analyses of how comics are really received in authentic writing lessons. The essay concludes with a combination of these perspectives to offer a point of view on bridging classroom practices and the findings regarding the reception to deal with current possibly neglected aspects of comics.

Opis:
The study is devoted to the analysis of the interaction of the comic and political in the logic of the popular culture organization. The latter is defined as a form of de-differentiation of mass and elite cultures. It differs from the democratic foundations of Antiquity, where the political needed forms of critical comedy under circumstances of the external institutions absence for self-correction. In the same way, the postmodern situation in the conditions of de-differentiation of all forms of culture gives populism as a new form of political and comic interaction in the conditions of the crisis of the Modernity basic institutions. Postmodern synthesis of political comic and administration of horror testifies to a dedifferentiation in popular culture, and is a symbol of the end of the social. The horror of the total chaos of personified corruption highlights the ironic evidence of their political scheme and the comic populism of their representations. Unlike the comic of Antiquity, where theatrical satire was a way of social criticism of political leaders, and, consequently, a way of increasing meaning, the comic populism of post-modernity is a way of concealing the disappearance of meaning. Although both historical versions of the interaction of political and comic work in the logic of the sign and dominant of popular culture in these periods.

Opis:
In spite of the fact that Lucan’s sympathies are apparently with the Republicans, his attitude to Pompey, which emerges from the Pharsalia, turns out to be rather critical. Moreover, this criticism actually comes very close to ridicule. Lucan depicts Pompey as a senile and narcissistic leader who dwells on his past success and lives in the world of his own fantasies. Trapped in the vicious circle of his delusions of grandeur, he is rather grotesque than majestic. The harder he tries to enhance his public image, the more pathetic he becomes both in the eyes of his friends and in those of his enemies. The effects of his efforts are, therefore, quite contrary to their purpose. On the one hand, the figure of the senile and deluded Pompey is the caricature of the decaying Roman Republic, whose degeneracy it obviously mirrors. On the other hand, however, Lucan’s grotesque anti-hero is the exact opposite of archetypal epic characters such as Virgil’s Aeneas. Willing yet unable to emulate his literary predecessors, he functions as the caricature of the literary paradigm of a standard epic hero.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the genre specific and the system of images in the tragicomedy “Volodymyr” written by Theofan Prokopovych. It is emphasized on the synthesis of European and authentic traditions in this work. The observance of the principle of unity of place, time and space as the main feature of this drama is determined in the analyzed tragicomedy. The research examines the specificity of the writer’s vision and interpretation of the Christianization of the Kyivan Rus’ in 988 and the introduction of Christianity as the state religion. It is also highlighted the researcher’s observance and non-observance of this historical fact. The peculiarities of creating the system of images presented in a high tragic style and in a low comic style are studied. The projecting of the historical figure of Prince Volodymyr on the Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who was the contemporary of Theofan Prokopovych, is noted. The conclusions about the innovative nature of the work in the context of the development of the Ukrainian Baroque school drama are drawn. The specificity of the genre is manifested through the synthesis of the comic and the serious features. The main characteristics of the tragicomedy are realized at the level of the system of images and an ideological and thematic spectrum.

multimodal translation, graphic novel translation, comic book translation, articulatory grammar
Opis:
The comic book genre, or, to be more precise, medium (Chute and Dekoven 2012), like any other, creates many formal elements which influence the interpretation of the story and set particular technical boundaries to the amount of text presented: for example, through the size of speech bubbles. In this article, I outline how both features have an effect on the process of translation by comparing Adrian Tomine’s well-acclaimed (Diaz 2007, Fułek 2010, Goodreads n.d., Windolf 2007) graphic novel, Shortcomings, with its Polish translation by Agnieszka Murawska entitled Niedoskonałości. I also evaluate on the quality of the choices made by the translator. Formal components of the comics, such as the composition of frames on a page as well as the composition of images within the individual frames, the use of color or the design of diegetic space (Lefѐvre 2009), constitute how the readership (including the translator) combine the elements on the page, fill in the extradiegetic space, and thus interpret and receive the story (McCloud 1994). It is not just the text in the speech bubbles that has to be translated – it is also the way in which it corresponds to images, transitions between frames, symbolia, narration boxes or the lack thereof (Baetens 2002). Moreover, the technical constraints, such as the size of speech bubbles and narration boxes, are another feature of the medium which translators must conform to. Finally, the question of cultural references and the readers’ knowledge assumed by the author may pose a difficulty, which, upon translation of a graphic novel, can be solved in a number of ways, which Murawska exemplified in Niedoskonałości. In this article, I attempt to show that, in terms of translation, the elements of “articulatory grammar” (Zanettin 2008) are of utmost importance and cannot be ignored. The images and design, unlike the text, will not be replaced in any translated edition; thus, the translator must ensure that the translated version corresponds to those elements just as the original text does. Murawska’s translation of Shortcomings is a notable example of such rendition.

Opis:
The article presents an interpretation of Calvin and Hobbes in light of the concepts of existential philosophy and psychology. In this context, the protagonist is shown as a puer aeternus figure, which is typical of the comic strip genre. Indeed, Calvin is a good example of the puer aeternus. After all, he lives season by season in an idyllic neighbourhood and does not grow up. Yet, a closer look reveals cracks in this Arcadian picture of childhood. Calvin is regularly put in situations (in the meaning developed by Karl Jasper) that make him choose. Referring to Clémentine Beauvais's idea of the puer existens figure invoked in relation to the works of Jean Paul Sartre, the article presents Calvin as being more a puer existens  than a puer aeternus. As a result, we can see Calvin as a child who, by his very own choices, makes himself and creates the world around him rather than as an eternally happy child who has been frozen in time.

Interjections are units that occur mostly in spoken language. It has been claimed that these parts of speech are characteristic of text types whose function is to mimic speech, such as comic books. Having analysed selected German comic books, I discuss the morphological and syntactic features of interjections in this text type. I examine morphological phenomena: lengthening, doubling, and multiplication, as well as compositions of different subclasses of the investigated part of speech. Special focus in the analysis is placed on the Inflektive category, a term used in German linguistics, meaning bare verb stems, typical for comic books. Furthermore, I describe the syntactic features of interjections, considering their ability to function as independent utterances in comic books. In conclusion I demonstrate that certain subclasses of interjections are prone to form novel and independent expressions with other representatives of the analysed class, while other subclasses do not display such a tendency.

The presented considerations refer directly to two different, and not necessarily consistent, creations of Moominvalley, presented in the Moomins magazine and in comic albums, in the form of a collection of illustration strips by Tove Jansson which were published regularly in the Evening News. This article is an attempt at analysing and comparing the Moomin worlds presented in selected Polish magazines and comic books. To systematize these considerations and carry out an efficient and clear analysis of particular interpretative layers and planes, this text is divided into sections, devoted among others to the theoretical sphere, being a collection of information on the Moomin comic strips in Polish magazines and albums, and the methodological sphere, comprising a description of the way of structuring the ponderations and analysing the study material. They are crowned with conclusions which attempt to define and identify the age of the prospective readers of the analysed illustration sequences and promise to start interpretative endeavours related to the remarkable comic strips by the Finnish writer and illustrator, also known as the Moomin Mum.
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi zatem próbę zanalizowania i porównania dostępnych światów muminkowych, ukazanych w wybranych polskich czasopismach i komiksach. W celu usystematyzowania rozważań oraz dokonania sprawnej i przejrzystej analizy poszczególnych warstw i płaszczyzn interpretacyjnych niniejszy tekst został podzielony na części, dotyczące między innymi sfery teoretycznej, stanowiącej zbiór informacji na temat muminkowych komiksów w polskich czasopismach i albumach oraz sfery metodologicznej, obejmującej opis sposobu porządkowania rozważań i dokonywania analizy materiału badawczego. The play world of children with autism is based on a fixed formula of their behaviour. They do not participate willingly in games taken up spontaneously and any attempts to initiate them or join games voluntarily are not always successful. They wish to participate in social contacts like every child, they have motivation towards it but they lack the appropriate knowledge and skills in how to get involved in them normally (Pisula, 2005, p. 103; see Njardvik, Matson & Cherry, 1999, pp. 287-295). The effective method that supports problem solving and enables children to learn social skills, including play skills, is the usage of Comic Strip Conversations, which arranges in a systematic way “what people say and do, and emphasize what people may be thinking” (Gray, 1994, p. 1).

Opis:
Taking into account the broadness of the SF genre, the article commences with examining the difference between speculative fiction and science fiction, as outlined specifically by Donna J. Haraway and Margaret Atwood. Drawing on Atwood’s understanding of speculative genre, the paper analyses two separate but intertwined artistic forms: a classic short story with embedded dialogue and a comic book / graphic novel based upon the extended version of the earlier narrative. The short story “Oursonette” was written by Atwood as a part of a national project of artists commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. It depicts Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 1945, from the perspective of Canada and its impact upon the publishing of “Canadian whites,” otherwise known as WECA comic books. Partially black-and white War Bears (2019), referring to the tradition of “Canadian whites” comics, is a modern graphic novel, co-authored with Ken Steacy, which essentially uses the plot of Atwood’s “Oursonette” as the foundation for drawing an expanded story that precedes and follows the original. The narrative is not simply elaborated, a new dimension of visual imagery and a significant layer of intersectionality have changed its meaning to a large extent. The article analyses those alterations in detail to come to a conclusion as to whether they are beneficial or redundant to the original form and content. Thematically, the paper probes the gendered dimension of Atwood’s (and partly Steacy’s) rendering of the superheroine subcategory, with regard to SF genre and its literary convention. The article compares how this issue is represented in both examined literary genres: a narrative by Atwood and a comic book / graphic novel by Atwood and Steacy.
