The aim of this paper is to analyse the image of Yugoslavia in the collective memories of the post–Yugoslav societies. The author of this text, basing on an assumption that every society has a great number of collective memories, highlights the fact that among the Balkan nations one can find both supporters and opponents not only of the SFRY but also of the idea of the cooperation among the Southern Slavs. Both positive and negative opinions of Yugoslavia in the collective memories are based not on the sober assessment of the historical facts but on collective emotions and historical and political myths. The anti–Yugoslav discourse in primarily based on the national mythology. The discourse of the supporters of the Yugoslav tradition one the other hand, goes back in a large extend to the transnational myths. By discussing these two types of ideas about Yugoslavia, the author of this text tries to show their impact on the current political decisions.

Opis:
In the judgment of the ECtHR in the case of Association of Academics v. Iceland, the Court commented on two important issues concerning the broadly understood procedure for resolving collective disputes. Firstly, the Court pointed out that “found that the taking of industrial action should be accorded the status of an essential element of the Article 11 guarantee but it is clear that strike action is protected by Article 11 as it is considered to be a part of trade union activity”. Secondly, it considered that the institution of mandatory arbitration could be a substitute for the right to strike, which was prohibited due to the need to protect the health of Icelandic citizens. In the context of the issues outlined in this way, the aim of the gloss is to verify the two theses mentioned above. First, the thesis was analyzed according to which the right to strike is not an essential element of freedom of association. For this reason, the jurisprudence of the Tribunal has been discussed against the background of ILO standards, taking into account the doctrine’s views on the status of the right to strike in the system of human rights protection and its relationship with other irenic methods of dispute resolution. Secondly, the thesis of the ECtHR was verified, according to which the mandatory arbitration established by the Icelandic legislator in the circumstances presented in the facts of the case does not constitute a violation of the right to strike. As part of the second thesis, the concept of mandatory arbitration and its status in the jurisprudence of the Court, as well as ILO bodies and labor law doctrine were analyzed. Finally, the relationship between the right to strike and social arbitration was examined.

Opis:
Collective self-reliance is an interesting, nowadays forgotten development strategy that was popular between the 1950s and 1970s, particularly among the newly independent states of the “Third World”. It was widely discussed in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by Yugoslav researchers, among others. This paper aims to examine Yugoslav ideas on collective self-reliance from a historical perspective on the basis of original works from the time. It presents a brief history of the idea and its resonance in the non-aligned world, contemporary criticism, as well as political, economic and spatial dimensions of the strategy and the means by which it aims to achieve the goal of an economically independent, sovereign “Third World region”. A summary of basic contrasts between two interpretations of collective self-reliance is given to illustrate the specifics of the Yugoslav approach. This developed strategy serves as a theoretical impulse to reintroduce the ideas of south-south cooperation to the development discourse.

Research background: Paradoxically enough, a large body of contemporary research relies on methodological individualism in order to explain collective activities and decision making. The mainstream of economic theories hardly gives any background to the issue of group activities. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to investigate which economic theories have addressed the problem of collective action, and how social scientists deal with it contemporarily. Methods: Consequently, the research relies on the study of heterodox literature concerned with the subject, referring to original works of most respected authors. The review is carried on systematically, respecting two competing approaches regarding methods and social philosophy. Findings & Value added: Studies on collective action are a domain of institutionalism, the "old" one and the "new" one. Have it both ways, institutionalist studies are rather imperfect in explaining this crucial phenomenon of economic reality.

The interpretation is crucial because of method used in the research, meaning hermeneutics, but also because of the, presented here, perspective of polyphony.

The author of this paper tries to answer the question whether sins, wrongdoings and injustice done by past generations are inherited. The article presents theoretical reflections on the concepts of individuality and collectivity and their relationships; the themes of collective quilt and collective responsibility and the difference between them and the role and importance of collective memory, not only in context of heroic acts but also in the context of shameful past and misdeeds. The scientific theory is compared with empirical research results on today’s Germany decision-making policy in relation to Second World War tragedy. The presented theoretical background and analyzed material gives base to draw conclusions and answer the hypothesis set at the very beginning.

Processes of European identity formation are analysed here in terms of identity work and, specifically, relationship (interplay) between biographical and collective identity work. First sections of the text (1 and 2) are focussed on grounding the approach in a range of theoretical orientations (symbolic interactionism and culturalist perspectives), on outlining its methodological implications (the rationale for using the method of autobiographical narrative interviewing and various methods of text analysis), and, finally, on developing research questions and preliminary analytical dimensions of studying the collective identity work, especially in relation to European identity work, the latter being based on results of the author’s research on the minority nation society of Wales (e.g. collective identity constructions, and figurations, in terms of cultural periphery / centre, hybridity, and marginality). In the next step of analysis, these preliminary questions and dimensions are related to problems of European identity work in general. In the next section (3) overall heuristic strategies of the offered project are formulated: the attitude of refractive self-reflection, the dialogical principle of calibrating research interactants’ perspectives, a multi-layer approach to the interplay between individual experiences and a variety of collective meaning resources, the strategy of contrastive comparison of studied cases and, finally, the zooming procedure of focussing (coding) empirical materials. The last section of the text (4) relates to the objectives / expected products of the project concerning dimensions and integrated model of collective identity work in Europe, and their practical implications for a range of social / political activities in education, legislation, governance, as well as for NGOs, social arenas and social movements.

The age-old philosophical idea of universalism defended by Husserl has in our times come under heavy inter-continental intellectualistic attacks. Advocates of localism, relativism and particularity have accused it of being a form of “Euro centrism”, and thus of being an essentially hegemonic concept. This paper examines Michael H. Mitias on challenges of universalism. Despite its short-comings, Mitias is perfectly in order when he insists that universalism does not set cultural understandings aside, for it does not iconoclastically view them as the cultural muck of history or as a cluster of irrational prejudices. This may be a good start point in terms of the future needs of our humanity and collective destiny, but it may not be enough to secure this future for all of us.

The aim of the paper is to shed light on the place of the Croatian author Jagoda Truhelka within Croatian literary history. The starting point is the fact that from the position of a very popular writer in the first decades of the twentieth century, recognized as a classic author of children’s literature, in our century she has become almost unknown. We will attempt to find reasons for such a trajectory by relying on several intraliterary but also extraliterary research strongholds, including archival material such as correspondence, re-examining in that context the canon as an aesthetically but also a socially determined system of literary “peaks” and its influence on the formation of collective and personal memory (Assmann, Halbwachs). Through a contrastive analysis of several editions of Truhelka’s The Golden Days, we will attempt to detect the impact of censorship on this short prose collection, considered by many to be her best literary work, and, hopefully point out the possible reasons for today’s problems with the revaluation of a once popular children’s classic. Extraliterary reasons such as purposefully keeping silent about the author’s works and the censorship of new editions have resulted in her disappearance from individual and, thus, also collective memory. Today’s efforts aimed at regaining awareness of the (canonical?) value of her literary work – apart from at the literary-theoretical level – have not achieved much success.

This paper uses (West) Germany as an exemplary case to analyse the formation of collective memories over a period of more than two decades after 1945. It traces the formation of collective memories in the German public through a decade of collective amnesia, followed by a period of regaining collective memories. It argues that the formation of collective memories is embedded in social and normative change, and identifies three causal factors that were responsible for the oscillation between amnesia and memory: the absence of victims in the imminent post-war period, that promoted the ‘myth of innocence’ (Fulbrook 1999); a series of major trials that started in the 1960s; and young elites who acknowledged moral and legal guilt and supported the trials, reconciliation and compensation. Data from public opinion polls covering the period from 1950–1970 are presented.

Opis:
Field theory is one of the most efficient and influential analytical schemes in the critical sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, which he consistently developed in his model of literary field. The analytical reliability of the model derives from the way in which Bourdieu combines the structural category of “field” with the phenomenological categories of “doxa” and “habitus”. This article argues that Bourdieu’s selective application of the two phenomenological categories produces a static structural model of literary field where all processes are explained in causal and deterministic terms. The article further seeks to present an alternative reading of the same categories within a discursive model where the processes in literary field and the motivations of its agents are driven by field’s discourses rather than by its rigid structures.

The purpose of the paper is to analyse issues related to personal data processing within the framework of co-operation between the employer and trade unions in individual employment matters. The issues of personal data processing in collective relations are becoming more important especially due to lack of detailed legislative solutions, which results in the necessity to apply the general provisions of the GDPR as well as the latest changes to the Trade Unions Act. Pursuant to these changes, not only employees, but also persons performing gainful employment who are not employees can create and join trade unions as well as can be defended by the trade unions. The legislator frequently finds it difficult to adjust the protection of personal data to the specificity of collective relations, and the way in which the relationship between employers and trade unions is shaped in individual employment matters raises many questions in the context of personal data protection. The issue in question has not been explored in depth in the professional labour law literature. Thus, research on this subject is novel and justified from both the theoretical and the practical perspective. In the article, the formal-dogmatic method of research was used.

Around the turn of the century, the notion of topos (τόπος) underwent an interesting and necessary transformation. Presumably due to the popularization of digital technology, scholars started to progressively uncover the complex nature of the word by expanding on its general meaning as it pertains to the sphere of speech. This phenomenon granted to narratives some spatial characteristics, and at the same time brought into the light an old and critical relationship between text and image. In the form of a conversation, this essay deals with this critical relationship between text and image, and the way this conflictual relationship shapes social imaginaries, propaganda, and automatisms when representing social events. The essay will address these questions through an analysis of a series of pictures that had a great impact on Latin America’s social imaginary.

Opis:
The paper explores the relation between collective memory and social theory, trying in particular to show the key role that the notion of collective memory plays in understanding the dynamics of the social process (structuration, genesis of social structure). It does it by means of a series of reinterpretations of classical authors. Investigating the phenomenon of forgetting as covering up the traces of social change (M. Halbwachs), problematized in the contemporary context (P. Bourdieu), leads us to unraveling the problematic character of social change as such in a vain effort of annulment of memory (A. Touraine), and finally to rediscovering of social memory at a deeper level, as a profound structure of social processes. This discovery points to the necessity of introducing a new, yet undeveloped method of studying the social unconscious (A. Giddens, J. Assmann, and in particular J. Alexander). Jeffrey Alexander overtly postulates such a development, identifying his major project of cultural sociology with a kind of social psychoanalysis. The paper ends with a question – where such a postulate leads us to? Perhaps we need a new kind of art of benevolent interpretation that brings along with new understanding also some kind of soothing the pain of misery, deeply inscribed in social existence.
