The paper describes the activities, structures and tasks of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, one of the most important remembrance institutions and the most important Holocaust Memorial in Poland. The short outline of the camp’s wartime history is followed by sections concerning the post-war site’s use and commemoration, the forming of the Museum, concepts of its shape, and contemporary challenges to its activities. The selected Museum’s structures were discussed: the archives, exhibitions, research, collections, conservation and visitor services departments.

Persistent sequences are the core data structure in functional programming style. Their typical implementations usually allow creating infinite streams of objects. Unfortunately, asking for length of an infinite data structure never ends or ends with a run-time error. Similarly, there is no default way to make an effective, O[1] or logarithmic access to an arbitrarily chosen sequence element, even when the nature of the correlation between index value and the sequence element is known. This paper presents a Clojure library that meets these limitations and offers an enhanced version of sequences with a support for effective random access and the ability to ask for an infinite length.

Microbes present in the indoor air of libraries and on the surfaces of books, map and cardboard packaging pose a threat to the health of workers and book users themselves. Therefore qualitative and quantitative analysis should be carried out to study microbial species and assess their cellulolytic activity to prevent the library resources from entomological disaster. Evaluation of the microbial hazards of the Skałka library was limited to 220 randomly selected volumes including 200 old prints and 20 incunabula. From all 220 objectes samples were tested for the presence of filamentous fungi. Each volume was described by four microbiological samples, taken from the back and the front of the binding, front endpapers or the title card and a middle card from a pad of a book. After the incubation quantitative and qualitative analysis of a species of fungi was carried out. Appropriate methods and measures to combat microbes and insects in the records and books must be applied in order to protect the resources.
Drobnoustroje obecne w powietrzu pomieszczeń bibliotecznych oraz na powierzchni książek, map i tektury opakowaniowej stanowią zagrożenie zdrowotne dla pracowników oraz ich użytkowników. Stąd należy przeprowadzać analizę jakościową i ilościową obecności różnych gatunków drobnoustrojów oraz ocenić ich aktywność celulolityczną, aby nie doprowadzić do katastrofy entomologicznej i mikrobiologicznej zasobów bibliotecznych. Ocenę stopnia zagrożenia mikrobiologicznego księgozbioru skałecznego, ograniczono do 220 losowo wybranych woluminów, w tym 200 starodruków i 20 inkunabułów. Z wszystkich 220 obiektów pobrano próbki, które badano na obecność grzybów pleśniowych. Każdy wolumin opisany został przez cztery próbki mikrobiologiczne, pobrane z grzbietu i przedniej okładziny oprawy, przedniej wyklejki lub karty tytułowej i środkowej karty z bloku książki. Po okresie inkubacji przeprowadzono ilościową i jakościową analizę gatunku grzybów. Dla ratowania zbiorów trzeba zatem zastosować odpowiednie metody i środki zwalczania drobnoustrojów w zbiorach bibliotecznych.

The article presents the problem of the practical application of legal regulations related to the preservation and protection of written cultural heritage in Poland after World War II, within the borders of 1945. The first legislative initiatives were undertaken in 1944. The introduction of normative provisions was initiated on a patch of Polish territory free from the German occupant. The war events, changes in the shape of the country's borders and the political system made it necessary to develop national documents in order to protect library collections, regardless of their origin. It was not an easy task to implement due to numerous difficulties and a complicated post-war reality. Based on few legislative provisions, over ten million volumes, mostly of post-German provenance, were saved until 1949. Valuable written materials were used to partially compensate for the World War II losses, rebuild libraries and Polish librarianship.

The ‘National Collections of Contemporary Art’ Programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage constitutes an interesting case of a systemic solution to the question of financing museum collections’ purchases. Its implementation demonstrated changeability of action (both from the point of view of the applicants, and Programme’s evaluators and organizer), while at the same time the genuine assumptions were maintained, namely the support provided to the major museums, most often newly established, whose statutory goal would be and is collecting contemporary art. Turning points in the Programme, as well as the observation of applicants’ strategies while the Programme functioned served as the basis for the Programme’s evaluation, and led to replacing it with the ‘National Collections of Contemporary Art’ Programme, these, however, demonstrated failures in consistency, in particular without pointing to the final systemic solution in this respect.

Opis:
Elizabeth Edwards, a British researcher into the relations among photography, history, and anthropology, used the term of non-collections to define numerous photographs of unidentified status which can be found in contemporary museums. They are not collector’s items, such as e.g., artistic photography or unique specimens of the first photography techniques. What she rather means are various items: prints, slides, photo-mechanic reproductions, postcards, namely objects once produced on a mass scale, with copies present in many institutions worldwide, thus being neither unique nor extraordinary. They present works from a museum collection, historic pieces of local art, or universally known works of world art. They exist in a hierarchical relation with other classes of museum objects, yet they are often pushed to the margin of curator’s practice and kept as ‘archives’, namely outside the system of the museum collection. They can sometimes be found in museum archival sections, in other instances in libraries, yet it is on more rare occasions that we come across them in photo departments. However, owing to the research into archival photographs conducted in the last decade (the studies of afore-mentioned Elizabeth Edwards and also Constanza Caraffa as well as the teams cooperating with the latter), such collections are experiencing a certain revival. Forming part of this research, the paper focuses on the collections of reproductions produced at the turn of the 20th century in museums in Toruń, Poznań, and Szczecin, which were German at the time; the reproductions later found their way to and continue being kept in Polish institutions.
Elizabeth Edwards, brytyjska badaczka relacji między fotografią, historią i antropologią, posłużyła się terminem „nie-kolekcje” (non-collections) na określenie licznych fotografii o nieustalonym statusie, które możemy odnaleźć we współczesnych muzeach. Nie są to przedmioty kolekcjonerskie, jak np. fotografia artystyczna czy unikatowe egzemplarze pierwszych technik fotograficznych. Chodzi raczej o różnorodne obiekty – odbitki, slajdy, reprodukcje fotomechaniczne, pocztówki – przedmioty produkowane niegdyś masowo, kopie istniejące w wielu instytucjach na całym świecie, pozbawione wyjątkowości i unikalności. Przedstawiają one dzieła z muzealnej kolekcji, zabytki sztuki lokalnej albo wizerunki powszechnie znanych dzieł sztuki światowej. Istnieją w hierarchicznej relacji z innymi klasami muzealnych przedmiotów, ale często usuwane są na margines praktyki kuratorskiej i przechowywane jako „archiwa”, czyli poza systemem muzealnej kolekcji. Czasem znajdują się w muzealnych działach archiwalnych, niekiedy w bibliotekach, rzadziej odnajdziemy je w działach fotografii. W związku z prowadzonymi w ostatniej dekadzie badaniami nad archiwami fotograficznymi (prace wymienionej Elizabeth Edwards, ale także Constanzy Caraffy i współpracujących z nią zespołów), zbiory takie przeżywają swoisty renesans. Artykuł wpisuje się w te badania i dotyczy kolekcji reprodukcji, które powstały na przełomie XIX i XX w. w niemieckich wówczas muzeach w Toruniu, Poznaniu i Szczecinie, a następnie znalazły się i są przechowywane do dziś w polskich instytucjach.

The article presents a picture of the countries of the German Reich and Denmark from the end of the 18th century on the basis of Voyage de deux Français en Allemagne, Danemark, Suède, Russie et Pologne, fait en 1790-1792 by Alphonse-Marie Fortiade de Piles, Louis de Boisgélin de Kerdu. It presents the authors’ judgements about the travel conditions and descriptions of the places they visited. The article underlines the characteristic elements of a travelogue as a form of communication, and the reflections and impressions which gave it its individual character.

The article describes fragments of book collections from five Ukrainian institutions – the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the “Studion” in Lviv, “Ridna Shkola” Ukrainian Pedagogical Society, the National Museum in Lviv, and the Greek Catholic Chapter in Przemyśl – which are currently housed in the Early Printed Books Department at the Ossolineum in Wrocław. In addition to the list of books from these collections, the publication provides a brief overview of their history and fortunes after World War II and the circumstances under which these books found their way to the collection of the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław.

Music by Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli did not have a prominent place in Sweden during the early modern period and a substantial part of the music by them preserved in Swedish libraries arrived as booties of war during the Thirty Years’ War and was never in practical use. There is performance material in manuscripts connected with the German Church in Stockholm, Uppsala University and some of the cathedral city gymnasia, with parts mostly copied from German or Flemish anthologies of Italian music. The situation in Sweden differs radically from Denmark, where there was a much more active reception, with Danish composers traveling to study for Giovanni Gabrieli. Still, it is argued that the kind of peripheral and mediated dissemination revealed in Swedish Gabrieli sources should not be mistaken for passive reception, but was rather marked by a different degrees of agency.

The article presents the problem related to the protection of written sources in Poland after World War II. The first attempt to draw up a legal document was made in 1944. From 1945, activities, based on legal provisions, were carried on a national scale by the Ministry of Education in a planned and organized manner. The most important actions were taken in the first period of the post-war protection of library collections, i.e. until 1946. The results of the conducted research made it possible to put forward the thesis that several million books were saved during that time. Józef Grycz made a great contribution in saving valuable written heritage. The activities, conducted in extremely difficult conditions, contributed to the reconstruction of libraries, librarianship, and Polish science.

Collections of Danish Golden-Age art are quite rare outside of Scandinavia, especially when it comes to those developed in accordance with a well-thought-out strategy established through the international cooperation of scholars. An important exception is the large group of Danish drawings, oil sketches, and artists’ correspondence found in the Fondation Custodia – Collection Frits Lugt in Paris, gathered by art historian and longtime museum director Carlos van Hasselt (1929–2009). As director, van Hasselt provided an interesting model of collecting, as his pursuit was not motivated by a particular investment strategy. His collection may, in a sense, be viewed as the material result of a network, one which he established and which brought together Danish researchers and museologists, as well as international art dealers. The aim of this article is therefore to investigate how a network may inform and help determine a particular collection practice, to trace how van Hasselt became an agent of the Danish art establishment, and to provide a critical overview of this collection, which became a satellite representation of the canon of 19th-century Danish art in Paris. Analysis of Carlos van Hasselt’s archive will provide critical reflections on the ways in which the collection was built and developed, and how it may serve as an example of the international dissemination of canons.
